Nel dicembre 2000, il gruppo Gucci acquisì il 51% del marchio Alexander McQueen e stanziò un piano per l'apertura di negozi monomarca a Londra, Milano e New York e la costituzione di Alexander McQueen Parfums. Essendo un grande fan di questo genio rivoluzionario, ricordo che salutai l'apertura della sua boutique milanese come una boccata d'aria fresca fra gli strascichi asfittici del minimalismo anni '90.
Non più tardi di dicembre 2003 sentii Kingdom per la prima volta e me lo ricordo ancora bene perchè era completamente diverso dal resto dell'offerta massificata. Era il momento in cui la maggior parte dei profumi permanentati anni '80 erano stati sbiancati da una decade saponosa di galaxolide. Non c'è da meravigliarsi quindi che risultasse strano o talvolta disturbante. Diversamente dal più conservativo nuovo McQueen, un vistoro floreale in flacone nero con collare di piume dorate, Kingdom era davvero la perfetta traduzione delle creazioni polarizzanti che l'enfant terrible della moda britannica faceva sfilare in passerella. In December 2000, the Gucci Group bought the 51% of the Alexander McQueen brand and this came with a plan for opening stores in London, Milan and New York and the establishment of the Alexander McQueen Parfums. Being a huge fan of this disruptive genius, I remember I welcomed the opening of his store downtown in Milan as a breath of fresh air in the aftermath of 1990s jaded minimalism.
It was not long after this I smelled Kingdom for the first time back in December 2003 and I still remember it as it was totally different from most of the mainstream offerings. It was the time when most of the permed and-mullet ‘80s scents had been toned down by a decade of galaxolide soapiness. So it’s no wonder it smelled odd and sometimes disturbing. Unlike the more conservative new McQueen gaudy floral housed in the black’n gold feathered bottle, Kingdom was indeed the perfect match to the polarizing creations the enfant terrible of Brit fashion was releasing on his catwalks. So let me share here too this review I wrote for the ÇaFleureBon Modern Masterpieces Serie.

La passione per i profumi nell'era dei social network ha i suoi vantaggi: puoi imparare facilmente guardando le immagini, leggendo e confrontandoti con persone ben informate da tutto il mondo. Di recente ho avuto la fortuna di entrare in contatto con una donna squisita, la più grande collezionista russa di profumi vintage, nonché collega blogger di aromablog.ru: Ekaterina Khmelevskaya. È stata così generosa da farmi sentire uno dei Guerlain più rari che reca l'etichetta misteriosa Chypre 53.
Il nome in se è alquanto curioso. Gli Champs Elysées sono vicini a Rue Cambon, ma qui non siamo chez Chanel che metteva dei numeri come portafortuna sui flaconi di profumo. Chez Guerlain hanno sempre preferito nomi ispirati alla natura, romantici oppure esotici come Violette de Madame, Une fleure qui meurt o Shalimar. Allora come mai questo nome?
Molto prima di Le Labo, la mia prima supposizione era che 53 potesse riferirsi al numero degli ingredient utilizzati che significherebbe una composizione abbastanza stilizzata per l'epoca.

The passion for perfumes in the social network era has its advantages: you can easily learn by looking at pictures, reading and discussing with knowledgeable people all over the world. Recently I have been so lucky to get in touch with a lovely woman who's one of the finest Russian vintage perfume collectors and the fellow blogger behind aromablog.ru: Ekaterina Khmelevskaya. She's been so nice to let me smell one of the rarest Guerlain bearing the mystery label Chypre 53.
The name itself is pretty curious. Champs Elysées are close to Rue Cambon, but we're not chez Chanel who put numbers as lucky charm on perfume bottles. Chez Guerlain they always went for nature inspired, romantic or exotic names like Violette de Madame, Une fleure qui meurt or Shalimar. So why this name?
Long time before Le Labo, my first guess was 53 could refer to the number of the ingredient, which would mean a pretty stylized composition for the time.

Forse conoscete Thierry Blondeau sotto le spoglie di Mechant Loup, il lupo cattivo, con cui firma il suo blog Olfactorum, più difficilmente lo conoscerete per la sua linea di fragranze lanciate a Parigi circa un anno fa. Sempre curioso di conoscere giovani creatori, non vedevo l'ora di fare quattro chiacchiere con lui dopo aver sentito Narcisse Emoi (Narciso Turbamento, ma suona anche come Narciso e me in francese) che mi ha colpito per la sua finezza.
Thierry ha iniziato dieci anni fa ad esercitarsi con le materie prime, componendo accordi e studiando le interazioni tra molecole e cosa ne risulta. Un anno e mezzo fa arriva il grande salto: dopo ottimi profumi d'ambiente uno dei quali, Ma Garrigue, è poi diventato un profumo, ha sentito che era pronto per presentare le sue creazioni. Non sembra essere un lupo così cattivo in fondo anzi, tutt'altro, così mi sono permesso di conoscerlo e fargli qualche domanda.

Probably you heard about Thierry Blondeau under the nickname Mechant Loup, the bad wolf, which is the signature of his blog Olfactorum. less likely you heard about his own perfumes line launched the last year in Paris. Always eager to meet young creators, I was looking forward to talk to him after smelling Narcisse Emoi (meaning Narcissus Trouble, but also sounding like Narcissus and me in French) which striked me for its finesse.
Thierry started ten years ago to play/practice with raw materials, composing accords and studying molecules interactions and the results they give. One year and a half ago comes the big change: after flawless room scents one of which, Ma Garrigue has turned also into a perfume, he felt it was the right time for a coming out proudly showing his creations. He doesn't look like a too bad wolf so don't be afraid and let me introduce him.

Ci vuole coraggio per vivere un amore. Occorre un po' d'incoscienza e la leggerezza di un cuore semplice che però abbia il potere di sgretolare tutte le barriere che mettiamo davanti a noi stessi, le aspettative della famiglia e le convenzioni sociali.
Sentendolo si intuisce che è proprio quella semplicità ribelle, quella leggerezza che Jean-Paul Guerlain deve avere avuto in mente creando Chamade, un orientale-fruttato moderno che prende il nome e l'ispirazione da un racconto di Françoise Sagan del 1965 dal titolo omonimo.

"La Chamade", termine con cui in epoca napoleonica si indicava il tamburo che batteva ritirata, narra della storia di una donna combattuta tra gli agi della vita borghese con un uomo maturo e benestante e il sentimento vero e profondo per il suo vero amore, un semplice artista spiantato che l'ama per quello che è e non per quello che rappresenta.

One must be brave to live a love story. A little bit of inconsciousness is needed and the lightness of a simple heart having the power to shatter all the barriers we put behind ourselves, our family expectations and social conventions.
Smelling it you can guess it's just that rebel simplicity, that lightness that Jean-Paul Guerlain must have had in mind creating Chamade, a modern fruity-oriental perfume inspired and named after a 1965's nover by Françoise Sagan with the same title.

"La Chamade", term used during the napoleonic age to indicate the drum used to call back the host, is about a woman torn among the comforts of the bourgeois life with an older and well-to-do man and the real deep feeling for her true love, a simple penniless artist that loves her for who she is an not for what she represents.
