Talks with wolves: interview with Thierry Blondeau

Probably you heard about Thierry Blondeau under the nickname Mechant Loup, the bad wolf, which is the signature of his blog Olfactorum. less likely you heard about his own perfumes line launched the last year in Paris. Always eager to meet young creators, I was looking forward to talk to him after smelling Narcisse Emoi (meaning Narcissus Trouble, but also sounding like Narcissus and me in French) which striked me for its finesse.
Thierry started ten years ago to play/practice with raw materials, composing accords and studying molecules interactions and the results they give. One year and a half ago comes the big change: after flawless room scents one of which, Ma Garrigue has turned also into a perfume, he felt it was the right time for a coming out proudly showing his creations. He doesn't look like a too bad wolf so don't be afraid and let me introduce him.

Un brindisi per Fragrances of the World: intervista con Michael Edwards (3)

"My first advice will be polarize, go for something adventurous"

While reading the second part of Michael's interview, I guess many perfume lovers wished everybody in the perfume industry would see his advice given the boredom of many new launches. Finally let's hear what Michael said about the fragrance market, EU regulations on raw materials and more.

E: Your fragrance classification helped a loto of retailers selling fragrances and nowadays more and more they rely on your guide to advice their customers also to find fragrance substituites for their beloved discontinued juices. But how the retail model has changed during these 30 years and how it will evolve in the future?
M: Very interesting question. The fragrance that started the whole business changing was Charlie in 1973 because before Charlie, perfume was a gift: men mostly bought perfume and gave it to women to be used on special occasions. But it was about that time that women started in the western world to move from home to office, they had money, a new generation. Charlie was the one in the States and then in Europe that triggered this thing: “Oh it’s so nice, I’m gonna wear it. I may start to wear it during the day”.

Un brindisi per Fragrances of the World: intervista con Michael Edwards (2)

"I’ve always believed that in order to understand a perfumer, you have to understand the perfumer’s work"

If like me you couldn't help but deeply admire Michael Edwards for the surgical precision of his words and for his intellectual honesty, you will surely be even more pleased to read the second part of the interview celebrating Fragrances of the World of course where Michael took the chance to disclose a couple of truths about the future of perfumery.

E: For the 30th Anniversary Edition, your famous Fragrance Wheel comes to life with a pictorial timeline showing the evolution of the iconic fragrances within each family. Would you like to tell me more about this evolution and how families have changed during the years?
M: For my 30th year what I realized I left on my back a lot of iconic fragrances. So I thought it would have been rather interesting if I gave you a timeline showing you in each family how the fragrances have developed. It's the iconic fragrances that moved that family forward. If you look in the book you’ll see that those Iconic status. if they’re French I probably wrote about them in my Perfume Legends.

Un brindisi per Fragrances of the world: intervista con Michael Edwards (1)

A toast for Fragrances of the World: interview with Michael Edwards (1)

For perfume aficionados there's no need to introduce Michael Edwards. His wide knowledge and his stories about legendary personalities in the perfume industry he met during his career are enough to say he's almost a legend himself. What strikes you talking to him are his elegance and cordiality and the generosity in sharing his passion. He's also become a regular guest at Esxence, so I thought what a better way to celebrate his Fragrances of the World 30th birthday than asking him for an interview? After attending the tribute to Sandrine Videault where he shared a touching overview about her career and persona, he's been so kind to accept my invitation. There's no need to say I go nuts for his british accent, so you can guess I didn't miss a word from his mouth.
