Christian Dior Diorella (E. Roudnitska, 1972)

Diorella, ad by René Gruau (1972)
"We're both screwed up, it creates a bond" Chloe

Stylish and emancipated like the main character of Éric Rohmer's Love in the afternoon (L'amour l'après-midi, 1972), the iconic algerian model Zouzou, Diorella teases the most bon chic bon genre chords of a hesperidic chypre accord but twists it with the oddest and most psychedelic fruity notes ever seen before in perfumery. Smelling it is not difficult to imagine the Diorella girl using Chloé's hook-up line with the nicest guy of the class, the one silencing the goo-goo eyed classmates, as though butter wouldn't melt in their mouth.
The dreamy girl of the New Look used to escape to Saint-Trop, she was gealous of her father, made fun of his mistresseser and grew up wearing Diorissimo. In 1972 her daughter is about to take her biology degree and after marching in pants during the student protests and now is leaving to London without permission from her conventional authoritarian parents, claiming so her future to the sound of egalité, liberté, sexualité!

"Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night!" Margo Channing - All About Eve

When I think of Divas from the silver screen, I keep thinking of personalities that look larger than life. Above all, compared to many nowadays characters I keep thinking of Ladies able to express such a wide range of emotions going from sparkling comedies to noir all at once. That's exactly what I feel about Rumeur de Lanvin.
This full bodied composition exploring the cheerful laughs of Arpège as well as the languid unblamed roughness of my beloved Scandal instantly pictured in my mind Margo Channing, a true strar, the most uncompromising, flamboyant, smoky and glamourous Diva ever embodied before by a masterful Bette Davis in All about Eve.

The last year while I was digging into the world of Edmond Roudnitska and his masterpieces, I also began to be curious about some of François Coty cretions out of the famous L'Origan, Ambre Antique and Chypre. Everything started with Serge Heftler-Louiche who enstablished Dior Parfums after working as Coty's personal secretary and managing director for Coty France. He was partifularly fond of Cordon Vert to the point he asked Mr. Roudnitska to take inspiration from it for the third Dior perfume, Eau Fraîche. Unfortunately I've not yet come across a well preserved bottle of Eau Fraîche, but since then the name of Cordon Vert rolled more and more like a drum in my head. Later on when I remembered even Guy Robert puts it in the selection of perfume masterpieces in his Le Sens du Parfum, I couldn't help but hunting for a bottle.

Un brindisi per Fragrances of the World: intervista con Michael Edwards (3)

A toast for Fragrances of the World: interview with Michael Edwards (3)

"My first advice will be polarize, go for something adventurous"

While reading the second part of Michael's interview, I guess many perfume lovers wished everybody in the perfume industry would see his advice given the boredom of many new launches. Finally let's hear what Michael said about the fragrance market, EU regulations on raw materials and more.

E: Your fragrance classification helped a loto of retailers selling fragrances and nowadays more and more they rely on your guide to advice their customers also to find fragrance substituites for their beloved discontinued juices. But how the retail model has changed during these 30 years and how it will evolve in the future?
M: Very interesting question. The fragrance that started the whole business changing was Charlie in 1973 because before Charlie, perfume was a gift: men mostly bought perfume and gave it to women to be used on special occasions. But it was about that time that women started in the western world to move from home to office, they had money, a new generation. Charlie was the one in the States and then in Europe that triggered this thing: “Oh it’s so nice, I’m gonna wear it. I may start to wear it during the day”.

Esxence 2014: stars rain (3)

Let's go on with the stars parade of the most interesting proposals smelled at Esxence 2014. After picking three beautiful roses bloomed in the milanese spring, let's talk about the green wind blowing since some season on the most bucolic and corroborating creations.

YS-UZAC
Passing me a blotter, Vincent Micotti immediately specifies that Sacre du Primtemps is just a study and not a new launch, a rich composition originally meant to be a bespoke perfume that hardly will become part of the line. Inspired by the famous russian ballet composed in Switzerland as Vincent points out being a cello virtuoso, this unisex eau de parfum opens citric and dissonant just like the first bars written by Stravinskij. In the extreme drop from the initial brightness to the barbaric gloom of vetiver with russian leather hints, the virgin giving her life here is May rose: she twirls tiptoe showing her colours, from steel to honey to die then into the jonquils.

Michael Edwards a Esxence 2013

Brand-list. Check. Contest. Check. Events calendar. Check. Finally everything's ready at the Triennale for the Esxence's sixth edition and also this year there's a menù full of interesting things for who's eager to discover all the news that will land in the shops soon and for who's craving some good olfactory culture.
Aside guesting the contest The Art of the Scent, the minanese temple of design will give space to several events. A special focus will be put on the Middle East thanks to Alireza Khazal's workshop Artistic Perfumery in Middle East, to Nicola Pozzani's lecture about the Smells of Saudi Arabia and to the Oman Tourism Office introducing the Fragrances and Myths of Arabia Felix.
The usual participation of the Osmothèque in addition to the yearly selection of gems from the past will bring to Milan a lecture that can't be missed: Bernard Bourgeois will speak about The chemistry in perfume as a source of creativity.
Esxence will pay hommage to Michael Edwards in the 30th anniversary of his Fragrances of the world followed by another tribute to Sandrine Videault, pupil of Edmond Roudnitska that passed away too soon the last year. I Maestri del Profumo: Edmond Roudnitska (2)

The Masters of Perfume: Edmond Roudnitska (2)
Eau d'Hermès (1951)

"A beautiful perfume is the one which gives us a shock: a sensory one followed by a psychological one" Edmond Roudnitska

As I pointed out in the first part of this monography, Edmond Roudnitska in 70 years left us 17 jewels that allowed him to mark the contemporary olfactory aesthetics. What I cherish as the most precious gem, the absolute masterpiece summarizing all his art is Eau d'Hermès. 1951 for the Hermès house is a revolutionary year: the death of Emile-Maurice Hermès puts an end to the Hermès Frères era during which the brand from saddlery becomes producer of luxury leather goods and accessories even for the Tzar. For the first time in more than a hundred years the company passed out of the blood line under the direction of Emile's son in law Robert Dumas. He immediately wanted to highlight the link with heritage baptizing the passage of the baton with a perfume dedicated to Emile aimed to be the essence of the Hermès elegance. Edmond Roudnitska who found in Robert both a customer and a friend, aknowledged this spirit concocting a perfume exuding class and tradition,  renewed though through his abstract vision of olfactory creation.

I Maestri del Profumo:
Edmond Roudnitska (1905-1996) (1)

The Masters of Perfume:
Edmond Roudnitska (1905-1996) (1)

"The public, harassed by so many brands, deceived by a flood of questionable products which skew its judgment and taste, is getting used to mediocre or trivial productions" Edmond Roudnitska

These words seem to have been written yesterday, nevertheless they are taken from Une Vie au Service du Parfum (Thérèse Vian Éditions, 1991) and Edmond Roudnitska back in 1959 used them to report about the perfumery scenario at that time. That's why I chose them to start speaking about this master of perfume, because to me they briefly resume his complete love for beauty and the passion for his job. Above all they are the outcome of a great sensibility that allowed him to understand past and present and to sense the future of a profession most of all in the past century he contributed in raising from handcraft to the status of invisible Art with a few masterpieces (17 perfumes in 70 years!) and several articles.
Last May during the Smell Festival I had the great chance to talk about Edmond Roudnitska and his vision of perfumery with Michel Roudnitska and Bernard Bourjois. Moreover thanks to Bertrand that like Roudnitska worked for Hermès, for sharing with me the following thoughts about this father of contemporary perfumery.

Bravi!

Blind Sniff Roulette #1: Rochas Femme

Femme - 1961 Advertising
The WWII bombs were still echoing while in 1943 Marcel Rochas and his partner Albert Gosset aiming to launch the newborn "Rochas Parfums" asked Edmond Roudnitska to create a perfume for them. Roudnitska was already working on a fruity chypre with rose, jasmin, a pinch of sandalwood and ambergris. Of course there was no news in making a lactonic chypre, Mitsouko docet, but he had the gupts to push it further using the famous prunol extra: a base he conceived like a pulpy overriped plum, decadent and almost jam-like. The fragrance Roudnitska proposed joined classicism and provocation, class and sensuality with the esotic, spicy and carnal taste of cumin dosed here in the base keeping it one step away from the indian restaurant effect. It was such an olfactory shock that Marcel Rochas accepted it as it was. Marcel, who was dressing all the Hollywood Divas of the time, called the perfume Femme to pay hommage to beautiful women and in particular to his dearest Helène that he met few years before chez Paul Poiret. To dress it he thougnt of the most feminine of his clients back in time: Mae West in a black lace guepière was in fact the inspiration behind the rounded flacon and the lace decoration for the box. Originally released in parfum, parfum de toilette and eau del cologne, the fragrance is still on the shelves but it's been reformulated since 1989. The version I led you smell it's a vintage eau de cologne from the 70's. The perfume is such a masterpiece that it still speaks to us about iperfeminine class after almost 80 years and all of you got it. Bravo!

Diorissimo 1956: ritorno all'innocenza

Diorissimo 1956: return to innocence

"True simplicity, which gives great composers that touch of class, is not the result of a display of ostentation in the midst of poverty, but rather a show of modesty in the midst of wealth" E. Roudnitska

Simplicity, this is the secret suggested by Edmond Roudnitska as a guideline for the creation of an original perfume. Diorissimo to me is not only about simplicity but also about innocence. It's the smell of a fairy realm, a world that existed just in my fantasy. When I was a child I used to play close to an ancient decaying palace and I looked forward for spring to come to see the garden covering in lilies of the valley. I could lean in through the damaged gate to pick flowers and sniff smells: the mossy shadow of the walnut tree and the carpet of foliage scattered with white little bells releasing their irresistible call together with dog roses. That fairy smell and the imposimg palace got me dreaming on imaginary animals, unicorns, ladies and knights.
