Yuri Gutsatz in 1952
September 1945, the scars of WWI are still fresh in Parigi. At the subway Étoile Platform a man comes close to Yuri Gutsatz: "Don't you know me? I am Jean Carles. Are you looking for a job?". Even if you've never heard before about Yuri Gutsatz, I think this anecdote is enough to let you understand we're talking about a great guy of perfumery with an adventurous life, but above all who left us a great lesson about perfumery as an art.
After that meeting, Yuri Gutsatz will work at Givaudan (Roure Bertrand Fils et Justin Dupont back in time) for more than thirty years and later in 1975 will enstablish Le Jardin Retrouvé, the first independent niche perfume house right before Jean Laporte would follow his example with L'Artisan Parfumeur.

DZING! de L'Artisan Parfumeur (1999)

Alexander McQueen AW 2001

L'Artisan Parfumeur DZING! (1999)

Alexander McQueen AW 2001
This review is one of my latest contributions to CaFleureBon Modern Masterpieces serie under Michelyn Camen's art direction, so in case you missed it I hope you'll enjoy it.A treasured memory of my childhood is going to the Circus. I remember being both awed and overwelmed by a mixture of feelings, childish anticipation, tears or laughs caused by the poker face of clowns, the breathless suspense of rolling drums while elephants step over a beautiful girl on the ground and my mouth opened in a capital “Oh” looking the acrobats swinging like birds on a trapeze.
Imagine asking a 30 years old perfumer to capture all these feelings as an olfactory briefing in the late ‘90s at the height of the minimal aesthetics. Doesn’t it sound like the recipe for a flop? Fortunately, as Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam would say, the best ideas come not from reason, but from a clear, visionary madness.

Talks with wolves: interview with Thierry Blondeau

Probably you heard about Thierry Blondeau under the nickname Mechant Loup, the bad wolf, which is the signature of his blog Olfactorum. less likely you heard about his own perfumes line launched the last year in Paris. Always eager to meet young creators, I was looking forward to talk to him after smelling Narcisse Emoi (meaning Narcissus Trouble, but also sounding like Narcissus and me in French) which striked me for its finesse.
Thierry started ten years ago to play/practice with raw materials, composing accords and studying molecules interactions and the results they give. One year and a half ago comes the big change: after flawless room scents one of which, Ma Garrigue has turned also into a perfume, he felt it was the right time for a coming out proudly showing his creations. He doesn't look like a too bad wolf so don't be afraid and let me introduce him.

Fragranze 11: Scent Diary #3

L'Artisan Parfumeur

Fragranze 11: Scent Diary #3

L'Artisan Parfumeur
A completely different packaging guests the new line Explosions d'Emotions officially launched at Fragranze. After twenty years from the very rare collection Sautes d'Humeur by Olivia Giacobetti, the in-house perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour takes again inspiration from moods, this time en deux. Amour Nocturne is the fragrance among the three that most thrilled me for its innovation. After making love, the night smells of just chopped cedarwood leaking sap and milk, dashed by savoury caramel and gun powder to balance it. Unexpected, like a firework.

La Parfumerie Moderne
All begins from an ancient forgotten palace on the lake side with ruined ceilings and dusty furniture. In a bedside table, Philippe Neirinck finds a perfume flask, maybe left by an indian princess. He opens it and lilac blooms in the air, redolent of springs from long time ago. Collaborating with Marc Antoine Corticchiato he founded La Parfumerie Moderne, inspired by the early XX century great french perfumery but looking to the future. The most interesting? Of course Désarmant, a very elegant full blooming lilac with its spicy-powdery accents. A must sniff as soon as possible.

Scent Diary: giorno #1

Olivier Durbano

Scent Diary: day #1

Olivier Durbano
The sunlight warming the cold stone: Heliotrope, an essence and a precious stone sharing the same name. Olivier Durbano playing with this coincidence of names, launches this fragrance where his beloved incense is heated by a light floral softness, with a bit of mystery, like the dark green of his pièrre-poème.

Scent Diary: anteprima v1.0

Vi aspetto a Firenze!

Scent Diary: preview v1.0

Since a few days you can find online on Pitti Immagine website a preview of my Scent Diary with the first news you will find wandering around the booths at Fragranze 10. As people of Fragranze staff pointed out, to them all the exibitors are equally beautiful and so equally worth, that's why it can be interesting to read someone else's point of view about them. In fact the most challenging thing about this collaboration is having carte blanche in chosing what to talk about, just right like what I use to do here since ever following my nose. Here we go with the preview and some related posts.
Looking forward to seeing you in Florence!

Aspettando Fragranze 10: Scent Diary

Waiting for Fragranze 10: Scent Diary

I almost regret Milan being desert lately these days without the chance to be close enough to somebody to play the "guess what is he/she wearing" game in the morning while going to work. With this melted and still urban landscape it's hard to realize that September is approaching and there's just one month left before the tenth edition of Pitti Fragranze.
September happens to be a month of celebrations not only because of Fragranze, but also because of my blog's birthday and this year there are two candles on the cake and I'm pretty happy because I already had some amazing gifts. The first, the most precious it's you reading my articles and posting comments. Thank you for giving me stimulating feedbacks that keep me going on with my olfactory journey. Another beautiful gift I got this year has just arrived from the Fragranze Staff that asked me to collaborate to a new challenging format: the Scent Diary.

Since a year ago there were rumors on the web about Bertrand Duchaufour working on a fragrance based on orange blossom and incense, two notes that seldom go well with my nose. Unfortunately I can't help it: orange blossom up my nostrils always rings a bell about detergent. So what makes most of the people dream about spring on the mediterranean coasts, to me coming from the Po Valley sounds like a coarse tinkling of dishes and it's relentlessly connected to soap bars and laundry. Another trouble is incense but the genius of Duchaufour already succeded in making me fond of it in scents like Dzongkha and Neela Vermeire's Trayee, where his mastery turned it into something light years away from the aftermath of High Mass. Just for this reason, despite the soap&thurible dread brood over it, I was really curious about how Bertrand could have developed this idea.
