OSA! Award 2017 - Incontriamo i finalisti

Dopo avervi presentato il vincitore dell'edizione 2017 di OSA! Outsider Scents Award, come promesso conosciamo meglio gli altri finalisti in ordine di classifica. Incontrandoli durante lo Smell Festival a Bologna ho rivolto a loro le stesse domande fatte a Michele Bianchi.

Marco Ceravolo, secondo classificato con MEMORHYZA e insignito della menzione speciale assegnata dal forum di Adjiumi, è nato a Ferrara e dopo gli studi letterari ha potato per scienze naturali all’università. Vive a Bologna dove lavora per Ikea. Nel 2004 frequenta la Scuola di Naturopatia Italiana ma solo nel 2007 apprende le tecniche di saponificazione artigianale con cui inizia a sperimentare con la materia del sapone e le sue fragranze. Ha concluso nel 2016 il percorso formativo di composizione di Smell Atelier con il profumiere Martino Cerizza.

E: Quale profumo avresti voluto creare (di qualsiasi era) e perché?
M: Potrebbe essere Bandit di Piguet perché mi piace la sua complessità basata su una molecola che amo molto, l'isobutil quinolina. Considerato quando fu creato, doveva essere davvero avanguardistico e sofisticato.

E: Come pensi che cambierà la profumeria e l'approccio delle persone all'olfatto nel futuro?

M: Rischio di non scostarmi troppo dalla realtà forse se provo a descrivere una specie di guanto futuristico, pieno di sensori elettrici abilitati a connettersi con il nostro sistema nervoso attraverso migliaia di recettori sparsi sulla nostra mano, capaci di raggiungere e stimolare quelle aree del cervello che controllano il senso dell'olfatto e quindi in grado di farci "percepire" una fragranza.

After introducing the winner of the OSA! Outsider Scents Award 2017 edition, as promised let me tell you more about the other finalists in order of classification. While meeting them during the Smell Festival days in Bologna, I asked them the same questions I gave to Michele Bianchi.

Marco Ceravolo, second in the list with MEMORHYZA and winner of the special mention assigned by the Italian perfume lovers forum Adjiumi, he is born in Ferrara and after studying literature he attended the faculty of Natural Science at the University. He currently lives in Bologna where he works for Ikea. In 2004 he attende the Italian School for Naturopathy but it was only in 2007 that he learned the artisanal soap making techniques and started so playing with soap and fragrances. In 2016 he accomplished his perfume composition training at Smell Atelier with perfumer Martino Cerizza.

E: What's the perfume you wish you created (from every era) and why?
M: It could be Bandit of Piguet because I like its complexity based on a molecule I really love, the isobutyl quinoline. Considering the time it was created, it must have been absolutely ground-breaking and sophisticated.

E: How do you see perfumery and people's approach to smell in the future?

M: Maybe I am not that far from reality if I try to describe a futuristic glove-sort of thing, full of electrical sensors, enabled to connect with our nervous system through the thousand of receptors spread out on our hand surface, able to reach and stimulate those brain areas in control of the sense of smell and so letting us "perceive" a fragrance.

Si è da poco conclusa l'edizione 2017 di OSA! Outsider Scents Award e le emozioni sono ancora intense come la fragranza vincitrice: HUMUS, creata da Michele Bianchi.
In tema di quest'anno, in comune con la VIII edizione di Smell Festival su cui i partecipanti sono stati chiamati a cimentarsi è quello delle "radici" e ciascun finalista ha dato la sua personalissima interpretazione.
Come ha ben descritto Francesca Faruolo: “Chi ha familiarità con gli odori ha forti le radici: principio sotterraneo di sviluppo e nutrimento di ogni cosa”. Ed è proprio la creatività la radice che ha alimentato e fatto crescere il desiderio di questi outsider di formarsi, affondare la propria conoscenza nelle materie prime della profumeria ed osare cogliendo il frutto del loro percorso. Scopriamo allora il vincitore. Nel prossimo post parleremo anche degli altri finalisti. Incontrandoli a Bologna ho rivolto a tutti alcune domande per conoscerli meglio.

The 2017 edition of OSA! Outsider Scents Award has just ended and emotions still flow intense like the winning fragrance: HUMUS, composed by Michele Bianchi.
This year's theme, the same for the Smell Festival 8th edition with which have dealed the participants is "roots" and each finalist has given his own personal interpretation to it.
As well described by Francesca Faruolo: “Who is familiar with smells has strong roots: undergoing principle of development and nourishment of everything”. And it's creativity the root that fed and developed the desire of these outsiders to train themselves, digging into the knowledge of raw materials of perfumery to dare and harvest the fruit of this path. Let's discover the winner then. In the next post we will talk about the other finalists: meeting them in Bologna I asked them a few questions to learn more about them.

Vi presentiamo i giudici di OSA! Outsider Scents Award

Sappiamo che c'è grande attesa per l'annuncio dei nomi dei cinque finalisti del concorso OSA! Outsider Scents Award 2017 che premierà la miglior fragranza artigianale ispirata al tema "radici". I membri della giuria stanno terminando le ultime valutazioni e a brevissimo i risultati saranno resi ufficiali e comunicati urbi et orbi attraverso il sito di Smell Festival, quello di La Gardenia nell'occhiello e le loro rispettive pagine Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.
Nel frattempo abbiamo un'altra importante rivelazione da fare. Con grande piacere vi presentiamo la giuria della seconda edizione del concorso, rimasta fino ad ora segreta per evitare ogni possibile influenza. Gli stessi giudici non conoscevano fino a questo momento il nome degli altri colleghi. Ed eccoli, in ordine alfabetico:

ANTONIO ALESSANDRIA, profumiere, fondatore dell'omonima casa di profumo e titolare di Boudoir36, il salotto della profumeria artistica nel cuore di Catania;

LUIGI CRISTIANO, erborista, profumiere artigiano, esperto di profumeria antica e moderna argomento su cui ha scritto diversi libri tra cui "La nota gradevole" (Studio edizioni);

ROBERTO DARIO, creatore di fragranze indipendente, formatore e consulente per lo sviluppo di progetti olfattivi;

GIANNI DE MARTINO, autore di ricerche di carattere etnografico sull'olfattto e di pubblicazioni sull'argomento (“Odori” e “Viaggi e Profumi” Urra – Apogeo), alcune delle quali in collaborazione con Luigi Cristiano;

ALESSANDRO GUALTIERI aka "the Nose" è un talento della profumeria artistica italiana, giunto alla ribalta con la dirompente collezione "Nasomatto" prosegue la sua ricerca con il brand "Orto Parisi" e attraverso progetti artistici e installativi;

VERO KERN, creatrice di fragranze ampiamente apprezzata dalla critica e dal pubblico più esigente, ha fatto dello stile, della coerenza e della rigorosa ricerca estetica la propria inconfondibile firma;

ALEX MUSGRAVE, scrittore, vincitore di un Fragrance Foundation Award (per ÇaFleureBon, 2015) e finalista ai Jasmine Awards (gli Oscar del Regno Unito per il giornalismo beauty), esperto di fragranze e fondatore del blog "The Silver Fox at A Scent of Elegance".

ERMANO PICCO, esperto di fragranze, fondatore del blog “La gardenia nell'Occhiello”, consulente per alcune case di profumo (es. Rubini), è coinvolto in diversi progetti culturali, tra cui OSA!, il concorso che ha creato nel 2016 in collaborazione con Smell Festival.

Revealed the Jury Members for the OSA! Outsider Scents Award 2017

As we know, you all are full of anticipation for the announcement of the five finalists of the OSA! Outsider Scents Award 2017 that will crown the best artisanal fragrance inspired by the theme "roots". The members of the jury are now doing the last evaluations and soon we are going to officially publish the result, sharing them through the Smell Festival and La Gardenia nell'occhiello websites and respective social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).
Meanwhile, let us disclose something more. It is our great pleasure to introduce you the jury for the second edition of the contest that we kept secret till now preventing any possible influence. The members of the jury themselves didn't know the names of their colleagues until now. In alphabetical order:

ANTONIO ALESSANDRIA, perfumer and founder of the perfume brand under his own name, Alessandria is also owner of Boudoir36, a perfume parlor in the heart of Catania;

LUIGI CRISTIANO, herbalist, artisanal perfumer, author of books on ancient and modern Italian perfumery (e.g. "La nota gradevole" (Studio edizioni);

ROBERTO DARIO, independent fragrance creator, educator, and consultant on Olfactory projects development;

GIANNI DE MARTINO, author of cultural/etnoghraphic researches and books on the sense of smell (e.g. “Odori” e “Viaggi e Profumi” Urra – Apogeo), some of them in cooperation with Luigi Cristiano;

ALESSANDRO GUALTIERI aka "the Nose", a talent of the Italian artistic perfumery, he his the mind beyond the brands “Nasomatto” and “Orto Parisi”, he is also involved in artistic project and olfactory installations.

VERO KERN, an icon of the independent perfumery appreciated by the most demanding critics and public, her unique signature is a fusion of style, consistency, and a meticulous aesthetic research.

ALEX MUSGRAVE, Fragrance Foundation Award winner (for ÇaFleureBon, 2015) and Jasmine Awards finalist, writer, fragrance expert and funder of the blog "The Silver Fox at A Scent of Elegance".

ERMANO PICCO, fragrance expert, founder of the blog “La gardenia nell'Occhiello”, a consultant for fragrance brands (e.g. Rubini) he is involved in several cultural project connected to the sense of smell, such as OSA!, the contest he created in 2016 in cooperation with Smell Festival.
