Penhaligon's for Meadham Kirchhoff: Tralala (B. Duchaufour 2013)

The name of Edward Meadham e Benjamin Kirchhoff will sound familiar to the fashion junkies among you. Maybe because it's a brand enstablished only in 2007 or because it's mainly sold in the UK, I never heard about them before (this also means now I don't follow fashion as I used to) so I thought I needed an update. A glance to some outfits from their catwalks though sufficed to me to enter their kitsch and unconventional world mixing inspirations from present and past with a well defined touch because as they say, “We do not have a signature but rather a handwriting. We like to tell stories in different ways”. One of the different ways they like to use telling stories is through perfumes as they shown scenting some catwalks with Hammam Bouquet, Cornoubia and other Penhaligon's classics, so they chose to write their own olfactory novel together with Bertrand Duchaufour.

Blind Sniff Roulette #3: Silences di Jacomo (1978)

Per l'ultimo giro di Blind Sniff Roulette non poteva mancare un vintage del 1978 che mi aiuta anche a svelare il filo conduttore dell'edizione di quest'anno: l'iris. La terza fragranza misteriosa celata in un elegante disco nero è Silences eau de toilette di Jacomo, iconica boutique newyorkese fondata negli anni '60 da James Kaplan e Gerard Courtin. Questo chypre verde composto da Jean-Charles Niel (Magie Noire di Lancôme) e Yves Tanguy (Magie Noire, Anne Klein II) in Italia non ha mai avuto grande fortuna, forse per la sua parentela (che alcuni di voi hanno sentito) con Chanel No. 19 e con Vent Vert di Balmain in totale controtendenza con le scie narcotiche di Opium, esploso appena prima nel 1977.

Così Silences è una fragranza vibrante e assertiva di galbano e giacinto (Eva contro Eva, Athena, D'Annunzio) per una donna dall'eleganza rarefatta, quasi austera (Richard Neutra, tailleur pantalone, giardino nobiliare, Laura, Audrey Hepburn) e dal carattere indipendente (gatto) dove il prezioso iris (velluto verde, pavone, bracciale d'oro, musica sinfonica) non evolve nel cuoio talcato di No. 19 ma preferisce un'armonia in minore fatta di terra scura che esala l'aroma di cipressi, muschi e rose sotto la pioggia (Rapsodia in blu, pioggia nel pineto). I nitromuschi scandano appena l'accordo boschivo di una brezza misteriosa e sensuale (ambienti mondani, suite per violoncello).
Silences è stato rilanciato nel 2004 ma la fragranza attuale ha perso il suo smalto androgino cadendo vittima degli inesorabili parametri IFRA e della mise au goût du jour (forse che siano due lame della stessa forbice?). Ancora bravi per aver saputo ascoltare quello che ciascuna fragranza ha da raccontare e grazie per aver partecipato ragazzi!

Blind Sniff Roulette #3: Silences by Jacomo (1978)

The last round of the Blind Sniff Roulette could be everything but a 1978's vintage that makes me unveil also the lead of this year's edition: iris. The third mystery scent hidden in an elegant black disk is Silences eau de toilette by Jacomo, iconic newyorkese store founded in the '60s by James Kaplan and Gerard Courtin. This green chypre concocted by Jean-Charles Niel (Magie Noire di Lancôme) and Yves Tanguy (Magie Noire, Anne Klein II) never happened to be hit in Italy maybe because of its connection (some of you got it right) with Chanel No. 19 and Balmain Vent Vert totally opposite to Opium's narcotic sillage broken out right before in 1977.

So Silences is a vibrant assertive fragrance with galbanum and hyacinth (All about Eve, Athena, D'Annunzio) suited for a discretely elegant woman, almost severe (Richard Neutra, trousers suit, noble garden, Laura, Audrey Hepburn) with an independent character (cat) where the precious iris (green velvet, peacock, golden bracelet, symphonic music) doesn't turn to No. 19 powdery leather but rather plays a minor key with dark earth giving off the smell of cypress, moss and roses in the rain (Rapsody in blue, La pioggia nel pineto). Nitro-musks slightly warm up the woody accord blowing a mystery sensual breeze (society parties, cello suite).
Silences has been relaunched in 2004 but the current fragrance has lost its androginous brightness falling victim to the relentless IFRA regulations and the mise au goût du jour (maybe they're two sides of the same scissors, aren't they?). Again bravo for being able to listen to what each fragrance whispers and thank you for playing together!

Blind Sniff Roulette #2: L'Eau de Merzhin

Gli appassionati della Blind Sniff Roulette sanno che nella scelta delle fragranze misteriose cerco di spaziare sempre fra presente e passato senza escludere novità e qualche colpo di scena. Così se la prima manche di riscaldamento è andata sul commerciale, per la seconda manche ho pensato a un profumo uscito meno di un anno fa che è distribuito in via confidenziale fuori dalle rotte canoniche. Si tratta de L'Eau de Merzhin di Anatole Lebreton, un giovane creatore autodidatta che ha formato il suo gusto grazie alla passione per i classici e allo studio delle materie naturali e sintetiche. Non c'è da stupirsi quindi che qualcuno di voi mi abbia chiesto se si trattava di un vintage perché la ricchezza dell'impasto olfattivo è proprio quella, unita a materie e spunti contemporanei che dipingono colori brillanti (i corni) e soleggiati (lampi di sole). L'ispirazione per la fragranza, come spiega Anatole nel suo blog, è un omaggio alla natura (verde, cicale, stalle, cavalli, insetti) e al carattere epico (alchimisti, Gian dei Brughi, M. Butterfly, il bagatto) della sua terra: la Bretagna di Merlino, o Merzhin in lingua bretone.

Blind Sniff Roulette #2: L'Eau de Merzhin

Followers of the Blind Sniff Roulette know I try ranging over past and present while choosing the mystery fragrances and news and stage tricks are not excluded. So if the warming-up round was about commercials, for the second round I went for a scent launched less than a year ago and confidentially sold off of the regular distribution. It's L'Eau de Merzhin from Anatole Lebreton, a young self-taught creator which trained his nose thanks to the love for classics and the study of natural and synthetic raw materials. It's no wonder then someone of you asked me whether it was a vintage because the richness of the olfactory texture is just like that one, painted in the bright (horns) sunny (sun beams) colours of contemporary materials and hints. As Anatole explains in his blog, the inspiration for the fragrance is a tribute to the nature(green, cicadas, stables, horses, insects) and the myths (alchimisti, Gian dei Brughi, M. Butterfly, the magician) of his Brittany, the land of Merlin a.k.a. Merzhin in breton.
