Blind Sniff Roulette #2: Phileas by Nina Ricci

For the second round I've chosen to make you travel, at least with the fantasy like Jules Verne with his tales. In fact just to the adventurous "Around the world in eighty days" and to its main character Phileas Fogg is inspired  the fragrance of the mystery vial #2.
In 1984 the Maison Nina Ricci takes inspiration from the boldness and class of this character to create Phileas, a very green and leathery masculine chypre, sadly discontinued which can be the gentleman brother, but not less daring, of Caron Yatagan. In fact they share the dense erbaceous notes someone associates with celery (bravo Woody Freak) here anyway made more brilliant by an opening decidedly citrussy coupled with a leathery base instead of the animalic one in Yatagan. The one you smelled is the original formulation.
The legend sais Francis Camail (Aliage, Ivoire, Giorgio, Eau d'Hadrien) that concocted the fragrance arranged together a variety of ingredients from different continents to obtain a kind of round-the-world voyage out of it : from Europe (cypress, cistus, celery from Provence, Balkan oakmoss, Italian lemon) to Africa (Reunion vetiver, basil from Comoros, Moroccan wormwood, Kenyan marigold, jasmine from Egypt) till Asia (Chinese cinnamon tree leaves, Indian sandalwood, patchouli from Indonesia) and finally America (curly mint, Caribbean limette, Virginia cedarwood).
The pyramid instead gives topnotes of aldehydes, basil, bergamot, green notes, juniper berries and lemon. Heartnotes feature carnation, cedarwood, cinnamon, jasmin, caraway, patchouli, pine needles, thyme and vetiver while the basenotes are amber, labdanum, leather, musk, oakmoss, olibanum and tobacco.
Speaking of notes most of you felt the citrus ones (bergamot) and green herbal ones (lavender, artemisia, mint and pine/eucaliptus) from which you got the grey to cold green range of colours. Someone got also the spicy edge besides the clamorous smoky resins and indian sandalwood base. Bravo also Saraprfms that smelled the floral hints that probably where the sell up in your face. Strange nobody got the leather this time. Maybe from this comes the impression of an elegant side opposit to a mysterious side, primordial like Marcopietro says under a civilized skin. Let's note that almost everybody had a deja-sentì vibe or it sounded familiar at least. That's for sure given by the fact that during the mid-seventies and for all the next decade this kind of fragrances were very popular and adding here and there different shades, many play the same chords. Therefore with Yatagan and Phileas other titled lounches came as Punjab by Capucci and Monsieur Carven and many other variations on the same theme. Speaking of the around the world trip it's curious you associated the scent to personalities in "exotic" places (Casablanca, Fitzcarraldo's Amazone rainforest). But now your answers...

Blind Sniff Roulette #2: Phileas di Nina Ricci

Per la seconda manche ho scelto di farvi viaggiare, almeno con la fantasia come Jules Verne nei suoi racconti. Infatti proprio all'avventuroso "Giro del mondo in ottanta giorni" e al suo protagonista Phileas Fogg è ispirata la fragranza della fialetta misteriosa #2.
Nel 1984 la Maison Nina Ricci si ispira all'audacia e alla classe di questo personaggio per creare Phileas, uno chypre maschile verdissimo e cuoiato, purtroppo discontinuato, che potrebbe essere il fratello gentiluomo, ma non meno ardito, di Yatagan di Caron. Infatti condividono le fitte note erbacee che alcuni associano al sedano (brava Woody Freak) qui rese più brillanti però da un'apertura decisamente agrumata e da un fondo cuoiato anzichè l'animale di Yatagan. Quella che avete sentito è la formulazione originale.
La leggenda narra che Francis Camail (Aliage, Ivoire, Giorgio, Eau d'Hadrien) che creò questa fragranza, mise assieme ingredienti presi da vari continenti compiendo così idealmente il giro del mondo: dall'Europa (cipresso, cisto, sedano di Provenza, muschio di quercia dei Balcani, limone italiano), all'Africa (vetiver di Reunion, basilico delle Comore, artemisia del Marocco, margherita del Kenya, gelsomino egiziano), fino all'Asia (foglie di cannella cinese, sandalo indiano, patchouli indonesiano) e infine dall'America (menta crespa, limetta dei Caraibi, cedro della Virginia).
La piramide invece riporta come note di testa aldeidi, basilico, bergamotto, note verdi, bacche di ginepro e limone. Nel cuore vede garofano, legno di cedro, cannella, gelsomino, cumino dei prati, patchouli, aghi di pino, timo e vetiver mentre le note di fondo sono ambra, labdano, cuoio, muschio, muschio di quercia, olibano e tabacco.
Delle note molti di voi hanno colto le agrumate (bergamotto) e verdi di erbe (lavanda, artemisia, menta e pino/eucalipto) da qui il riferimento alla gamma dal grigio al verde freddo. Qualcuno ha colto anche la parte speziata, oltre alla strepitosa base di sandalo indiano e resine fumose.  Brava anche Saraprfms a cogliere il lato fiorito che forse era il meno evidente. Strano che nessuno abbia fiutato il cuoio stavolta che c'era. Forse da qui l'impressione di un lato elegante contrapposto a un lato misterioso, primordiale come dice Marcopietro sotto una scorza civilizzata. Da notare che quasi tutti avete avuto un'impressione di deja-sentì o di familiarità data certamente dal fatto che dalla metà degli anni 70 per tutto il decennio successivo questo genere di fragranze conosce grande popolarità e con varie sfumature molte ruotano sugli stessi cardini. Ecco che con Yatagan e Phileas nascono i blasonati affini Punjab di Capucci e Monsieur Carven e molte altre declinazioni del tema. Quanto al giro del mondo è curioso che lo abbiate associato a personaggi in luoghi "esotici" (Casablanca, l'Amazzonia di Fitzcarraldo). Ma ora largo alle vostre impressioni...

Nell'atmosfera ospitale di Boudoir 36, oramai un riferimento profumato nel cuore di Catania per tutti gli amanti della profumeria artistica,  potrete degustare alcune fragranze associate a particolari sapori. Blind Sniff Roulette #1: Choc de Cardin

Ero titubante sulla fragranza giusta per iniziare questo gioco: vintage o nuovo? Di nicchia o commerciale? Comunque volevo fosse qualcosa che regalasse emozioni, quindi sono andato a pescare nei miei ricordi olfattivi: mia madre portava questa fragranza durante le estati più belle della mia adolescenza.  L'autrice è Françoise Caron (Hermès Eau d'orange verte, Kenzo pour femme, Commes des Garçons series 1 red: palisander) che nel 1981 crea per Pierre Cardin questo particolare profumo dal nome Choc de Cardin che anche secondo Luca Turin rimane uno dei suoi capolavori dimenticati. La fragranza, venduta in Italia fino ai primi anni 90 e poi ritirata dalla distribuzione, oggigiorno in Francia si trova nella sua ennesima riformulazione perfino nei supermercati. Quella che avete sentito è una delle sue precedenti incarnazioni che è pressoché come me ricordavo nei primi anni 90.
Questo chypre femminile di grande equilibrio fonde in stile classico molto serrato un'infinità di sensazioni e infatti l'avete associato a musica classica o jazz perlopiù. Soprattutto predomina la parte verde che tutti avete sentito (macchia mediterranea, giardino classico, etc).
Il profumo parte con note verdi (limone, bergamotto, timo, basilico, salvia, cardamomo) molto suggestive arricchendole via via di sfaccettature sempre più complesse, fruttate (pesca, aldeidi) che nessuno di voi ha colto, fiorite (iris, rosa, gelsomino, mughetto) , animali (miele, zibetto, muschio), legnose/boschive (sandalo, patchouli, muschio di quercia) e ambrate. Qualcuno ci ha sentito anche la lavanda in testa e una sfumatura cuoiata data forse da un ombroso muschio di quercia combinato con le note animali.
Non mi sorprende il fatto che nessuno di voi abbia pensato ad un profumo prettamente femminile infatti è uno chypre di grande carattere pensato per una donna serena, forte e dalla bellezza classica ma oggi lo porterebbero benissimo anche molti uomini. E ora le vostre risposte...

I was doubtful about which fragrance was right to start open this game: vintage or new? Niche or commercial? Anyway I wanted it to be something emotional, so I searched in my olfactory memory: my mother used to wear this fragrance during the most beautiful summers of my teenage.  The creator is Françoise Caron (Hermès Eau d'orange verte, Kenzo pour femme, Commes des Garçons series 1 red: palisander) that in 1981 conconted for Pierre Cardin this particular scent named Choc de Cardin that also according to Luca Turin remains one of her forgotten masterpieces. The fragrance, sold in Italy till mid 90's and then retired from the distribution, nowadays in France can be found in its n-th reformulation even in supermarkets. The one I gave you is one of the past formulations that's almost identical to how I remember it in the mid 90's.
This well balanced feminine chypre melts seamlessly in a classic style several sensatons. In fact you connected it mostly to classic or jazz music. Above all it's dominated by the greeness that all of you have perceived (mediterranean schrubland, classic garden, etc).
The perfume opens with green notes (lemon, bergamot, thyme, basil, sage, cardamome) very striking and grows with more and more complex facets, fruity(peach, aldehydes) that nobody detected, floral (iris, rose, jasmin, lily of the valley), animal (honey, civet, musk), woody (sandalwood, patchouli, oakmoss) and ambery notes. Somebody detected also lavender in the topnotes and a leathery vibe maybe due to a shady oakmoss coupled with animal notes.
I'm not surprised that nobody thought about a strongly feminine scent, in fact it's a chypre with a bit temper created with a strong and serene woman in mind, a classic beauty, but nowadays it could be pulled off nicely by many men. And now your answers...
