Hermessence Santal Massoïa: the weight of silence

I must confess I not always go into raptures over Jean Claude Ellena's minimal-chic transparent style except when compositions don't turn hollow after the Ellenization process but where subtraction preserves the crystalline surface of the creation to let unusual carrying woofs shine through it. Nevertheless not everything turns out as it should and the latest Hermessence Santal Massoïa only partly does the trick.
For sure the name got my attention about a couple of things. First of all I was eager to smell Monsieur Ellena interpretation of sandalwood (his first one if I'm not wrong) while the second one was about the exotic part of the name of this fragrance.

Artisan Parfumeur Mon Numero 6

Artisan Parfumeur Mon Numero 6
Waiting for the rain

Pitti Fragranze last edition made me one of the biggest gifts I could imagine: the chance to meet Bertrand Duchaufour, a great perfumer, one of my favourites that put his olfactory signature on both commercial and niche fragrances like Jo Malone Lime&Basil and Acqua di Parma Colonia Assoluta (with Jean Claude Ellena) or Comme de Garçons Avignon till Artisan Parfumeur fragrances (Dzongkha, Fleur de Liane, etc...) and Penhaligon's which enstablished a fruitful collaboration with him.
Right thanks to Artisan Parfumeur Monsieur Duchaufour held the launch conferencefor the new line Mon Numero, a serie of exclusive fragrances with even higher quality raw materials. The exclusivity is given also by the fact that these ten fragrances named simply with numbers will be sold each one exclusively for every country of the ten biggest retailers for Artisan Parfumeur. I was so curious that I couldn't wait to smell them when I heard they would have been introduced by Bertrand himself.

Artisan Parfumeur Mon Numero 6

Arte sotto le stelle: Save the date!

"Only the moonlight has lighted my sleepless nights..."

With this incipit Antonio Alessandria invites us to his Boudoir 36 (more details on the website) in Catania on Sunday Ottobre 23 at 18.00 for an evening dedicated to painting and perfumery in a union of visual and olfactory sensations as the night falls. The colours are the ones by the master Riccardo Negri that will exhibit his work Il Cielo degli Amanti (The lovers sky), introduced by the comment of the art critic Anita Tania Giuga.
To complete the artistic tribute to the theme of the sky, Antonio as a first preview will introduce his guests to his "Hommage à la lune", an olfactory poem in three scented acts. A story in three fragrances capturing the nocturnal star in three different moments: Nacre Blanche or the full moon as white as ivory, Noir Obscur for the new moon with its sinful and naughty darkness and Nuit d'Argent telling about a pleasantly grim silver moon.
I've already had a little preview and let me advice you, if you are in the neighbourhood you absolutely cannot miss this unique occasion!

E: Wow, bella notizia, adoro i cuoiati.

Quale segreto custodisce? (sorrido)
R: No, no, nessun segreto.

Lunching with the Professor: interview with Roja Dove (3)

Tempus fugit, we're lunching since more than an hour and I still have some question left on Roja and his fragrances.

E: You started your career in the perfume industry long time ago as you mentioned before, when you were offered to join Guerlain. Nowadays there are many schools like ISIPCA and Cinquième Sens, then there are people trained on the field by a perfumer like Mona di Orio by Edmond Roudnitska and finally there are self-trained perfumers like Andy Tauer. What do you think are the mandatory skills and steps to become a perfumer?
R: The mandatory skill that's necessary to become a nose is criticism. When you work for months on a fragrance it's easy to grow on it, to get so familiar with it that it becomes difficult to be objective and judge whether it is a good formula or not. So it becomes important to be self-critical, you must have perfonality, not ego. Moreover you must have no fear, be free to experiment and judge objectively your creations trying to do your best. For example at the moment I'm working on the next two fragrances in my collection, two leather perfumes.

E: Wow, good news, I love leathers. Would you like to give me some anticipations about them?
R: I'm talking about a masculine and a feminine one and they'll be the last scents completing my collection Roja Parfums, after these ones I won't add any other perfume to it. The launch should be in 2012 but I'm working on them since more than a year and I'm not yet fully satisfied. See, as I told you before it is easy to grow on it when you work for months on a formula with the risk of not being objective. When I understand this is happening to me, it means I have to put it aside trying not to think about it. Then when you come back to your job only after some time you realize that what smelled right it's not to good. So by now let me say they will be launched in 2012 but if in the end I'm not convinced, I'm not in a hurry, they will be launched one year later. What matters is I must be sure to have made them at my best because anything people will say about them, good or bad, I'll be ok with myself.
Speaking about the last fragrances added to the line, their names are Innuendo and Danger. Names are very important to me, I spend lots of time thinking before chosing them.
E: It was the same for Scandal if I remember well where for sure you had to take in account there was already Scandal by Lanvin.
R: Yes. I wanted Scàndal (Roja puntualizza la pronuncia all'inglese) to be named like that because it brings a scandalous message you cannot hide, it is an indolic-floral fragrance with a rich oriental base with vanilla and animal notes, something very different from Lanvin Scandàl (alla francese). About the fact that already existed a fragrance with this name I had my lawyers take care of it. By chance nobody happened to take care at Lanvin to register it, therefore I had anyway green light to go for it.
Innuendo and Danger instead are two fragrances quite different from each other that I created also taking some risks. Innuendo means allusion while Danger well, is danger. Could it be possible to have similar fragrances with this names? Obviously no, in fact while Innuendo is a classic, soft and delicate fragrance with musks and violet, Danger aims to get attention on something dangerous, a seduction game where you have to take some risks with a rich bouquet, enveloping with suede notes and jasmin from Grasse. The same inspiration goes for Danger man where vetiver joins the animal notes of ambergris. Again raw materials are to me very important and as for jasmin where I am one of the few privates to obtain the most precious quality from Grasse, also for ambergris I use real natural ambergris and the result is really dangerous and seductive.

E: Wow! I'm really curious to smell them. I guess you are aware of the fact that there's a lot of buzz about your shop. Also the myth of your "secret fragrances" which are produced just for fifty lucky people each one brought back to the perfume lots of its magic. Can you tell me about how it's born this idea?
R: in 2001, it was exactly ten years ago this month, I decided to resign from Guerlain. I didn't think about anything in that moment, I didn't think of what to do or to which company to work for. Every year they hold the “Terrence Higgins Trust London Lighthouse” a charity auction to collect founds for the research on AIDS and a man asked me if I wanted to make a perfume for it. Ok but what to do? Besides I discovered the auction would have place at Christie's and it was a very glamourous event with people donating sport cars or even personalities like Manolo Blahnik usually donating unique shoes on measure to the winner. So I thought about making a bespoke fragrance for the winner but to give just the empty flacon for the auction.
E: The beautiful flacon of Lubin L'Ocean Bleu, the one with the dolphins right?
R: Exact. I wanted a particular flacon for the auction and since I always liked this one I asked to some friends at Baccarat if they could do it for me. The auction was a great success and I created my first bespoke perfume. Right after we opened the shop here at Harrods and with the eco about my name and the auction, people arrived here asking for bespoke perfumes. So I realized that there was people willing to spend lots of money to have a unique fragrance, I realized there was also another type of customer. So without thinking too much I started working on a perfume I could offer to customers looking for something unique. Usually I don't take care about the commercial details when I create, I put down the formula without taking in account the cost. That time I even more wanted to draw attention on the fragrance in fact I chose a normal packaging to bottle it. People liked the fragrance and so I made the others and now they are sixteen. Also this time the name comes from a collaborator as he thought they would be almost as bespoke fragrances limited to fifty customers, so he came with Semi-Bespoke Perfumes.
E: It's curios that you keep them locked in a drawer. What's the secret inside it? (smile)
R: No, no, no secrets (smile). Simply you don't see them and they're not advertised because I want them to stay in background, not to steal the scene to the other fragrances here and also to my line.

Finally Roja asks me which fragrances I used in the past and which notes I like to understand my tastes. I tell him I don't like citrus that much but I like leathers, animalic and green notes, indolic florals and iris.  It's surprising how discussion flows, his ability to sweep over time or make associations even only talking about notes with him. In the end he picks for me to smell the Semi-Bespoke #3, #5, #7 e #11.
Time is over, lunch was excellent above all for the company and Mr. Dove is already awaited somewhere else. I thank him heartedly for being so nice to me and say goodbye as he takes me back to the shop to smell the Semi-Bespoke Perfumes.
I smell them one by one, closing my eyes and instantly they make me think to glamourous spaces, to big leather armchairs, dark furniture, big chandeliers and vases with flowers. The style is the one of classic french perfumery, above all from the '30s and '40s, just with a more modern twist given for sure by a more airy structure. Yet it's like I could see in these grandsons the genetic footprint of granfathers like Bandit, Tabac Blond and Le Dix, together with the extraordinary raw materials they had back in time and that the several reformulations corrupted.
For a while I feel like a child in a funfair that doesn't want to get off of the amusements so I keep going on smelling them. I shilly-shally between #5 and #11, I'm charmed.
#5 is the brightest initially, slightly aldehidic as it keeps going on towards a leathery chypre in the vein of Tabac Blond, just with a very elegant iris instead of carnation. #11 is more decided since the begininng and right after a while of freshness it shows a stronger leather, with a bewitching gardenia facet wrapped together with its foliage in an earthy vetiver. In the end I go for #5 and ask to try it on skin and there I was greatly surprised by a drier leather base, a Cuir de Russie like they don't do often anymore nowadays so now I know why being wealthy enough, it's worth to award themselves with something so precious.

Christian Dior Poison (1985)

< Parte 1 > <Parte 3>

Lunching with the Professor: interview with Roja Dove (2)

Going on with the second part of the interview I thought to take advantage from Roja's competency as perfumery historian to understand its key events.

E: Since Paul Parquet era up to now which are to you the main milestones that have outlined modern perfumery history?

Coty Emeraude (1941)
R:No doubts, the first step was made by Paul Poiret who enstablished Parfums de Rosine starting the couturier perfumes era. After him came Chanel, Lanvin and all the others but the important thing was that the link with fashion raised the attention of bourgeoisie on perfume, making it accessible to a wider social class.
In a certain way François Coty did the same making perfume accessible to people. He did even more, he invented many of the classical themes in perfumery and got the credit to house them in beautiful Lalique bottles finally available to everyone's reach. Guerlain finished the job started with Coty polishing his fragrances: l'Heure Bleue, Mitsouko, Shalimar can be considered as a matter of fact polished versions of L'OriganChypre and Emeraude.
Despite not being important for the public, Elsa Schiaparelli Shocking is noteworthy from an industrial point of view because it was the first fragrance not made in house but made to order by a manufacturer.
Youth Dew by Estee Lauder has been really important for the US market: first of all the fragrance was launched as a bath oil and only later released as an eau de toilette. This allowed initially to unscrew the cap and dirty your fingers with the fragrance, easily smell it in a way related to cleanliness with a totally new gesture. This brought perfume to the people for the first time in America. Then in the seventies we must mention Charlie that was a great marketing success because it was proposed as a lifestile scent, for the sexually free and independent woman. It was the first perfume women bought by themselves while before men used to buy them as a gift.
E: Oh yes, I remember Charlie, the fragrance was terrible

Christian Dior Poison (1985)
R: The fragrance itself was perfect. It was the cheap raw materials making it terrible. Later the eighties came and fragrances like Poison and Giorgio Beverly Hills and in general the fragrances became vulgar as they had to reflect consumism and hedonism. It was the time of status symbols and also perfume is not chosen anymore as a secret of beauty but showed off to be instantly recognizable. Nevertheless at the end of the eighties HIV broke out and right after the economic crisis, things that scared people so they wanted to escape from them at least ideally.

Mugler Angel (1992)
The olfactory escape brought to the market from one hand the oceanics like Escape and New West and from the other hand the gourmands like Angel (also this one was a way to escape from the bare reality). Scents lost here their sofistication becoming instantly gratifying scents without complexity. Another important phenomenon that didn't happen by chance is that in these years companies producing most of the fragrances are the same producing detergents and a few at a time they deprived the market of freedom: there was no choice because everything smelled the same.
Hence that's why small niche houses started to become important. Right after the year two thousand Harrods realising this trend asked me if I wanted to open a niche perfumery at the fifth floor and so that's how this place was born. I was thinking about the name but I didn't have a clue and in the end the name Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie came from my collaborators on the analogy of Haute Couture and so I went for it to let people immediately understand they can find here a selection I personally made of fragrances that represent the best you can get from perfumery nowadays.

E: Interesting point, in fact one of my further questions would have been how your fragrant salon was born. And what about other recent important events?
R: Certainly the launch of Tom Ford Private Blend line . He's an influential person with a strong image coming from the fashion system that decided to create fragrances also using naturals. This made his name to become a strong appeal for people to get back to the origins of perfumery in some way bringing it back to its true sense. Moreover it's not by chance he did it with a fragrance collection, a concept that's become very important. Internet gave people access to information thanks to many resources like you bloggers, forums, online magazines. Now they are more conscious about what they buy so the idea of having a collection tailored by a creator makes them more confident to chose what suits them from the collection.
E: in other words it's a bit like going in a shop to buy some choths from a fashion designer's collection.
R: Exact.

Maybe it's the british accent, maybe it's the intense blue glance he's got while telling about the years he lived himself following the evolution of tastes and markets, but Roja is so charming even when he dwells on details that one could listen to him for hours.
But time is a hard master and I still have some questions left for him in the third part of the interview I will publish soon.

A pranzo col Professore: intervista con Roja Dove (1)

Londra, Harrods Knightsbridge, quinto piano.

Lunching with the Professor: interview with Roja Dove (1)

London, Harrods Knightsbridge, fifth floor. To many perfume lovers this hint is enough to guess where I am. I open the door and enter in reverent silence, almost walking on tiptoe enchanted by the flashing of lights and display cases while I wander through the labirinth of dark and elegant furniture on which are displayed as knick-knacks the bottles. Passing by I secognise some of them: the italian Nobile in blown glass that make me feel like home for a while, Vero Kern's extraits on a small desk,  Caron's urne fontaine making a fine show and a wonderful selection of Nina Ricci in Lalique crystal among which the yummy apple of Fille d'Eve stands out. I pick it and put it close to my nose. Meanwhile I hear calling my name, Roja Dove in silk black shirt catches me as red-handed as a child with his finger in the jam. Fortunately the smile on his face and an invitation to lunch break down my tension finally. By the way, what's better than a lunch together to ease talking about themselves?

Sniffing London: a sniffathon under the Big Ben

I was wriggling out of my responsibilities since I didn't publish nothing new in the past days and maybe somebody was wondering why. Somebody else instead already knew I was travelling to London for some days to visit some friends and see some art gallery and of course for a sniffathon downtown.
It was since years I was curious about british perfumery brands almost impossible to find in Italy like Ormonde Jayne and Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie so while I was planning my scented tour I wondered why should I restrict myself to just discover the fragrances? So I thought to try with an interview to better understand also their creators. Fortunately Linda Pilkington and Roja Dove are not only refined perfumers but above all two exquisite persons that instantly accepted my invitation showing to be very helpful in introducing me to their fragrances and telling me a lot of curious things I will tell you very soon.
