Prima Femme con la sua base calda di cumino, poi il methyl diantilis che nasconde il tono medicinale del chiodo di garofano, ed ora una sorpresa. Non so se vi siete accorti, ma il fil rouge del gioco di quest'anno è stato il tema delle spezie, così ho pensato di chiudere con qualcosa di pepato. Infatti avete sentito in anteprima In the City of Sin, l'ultima creazione di Calice Becker per la nuova collezione In the Garden of Good and Evil di By Kilian. Questo primo capitolo, il più unisex dei tre, è descritto come l'ingresso del giardino dell'Eden, una veduta invitante, luminosa di bergamotto, rosa e note fruttate, ma che unisce dettagli misteriosi dati dalla speziatura importante di cannella e cardamomo e da un tocco d'incenso. Anche io concordo con le vostre sensazioni di fragranza dalla grande diffusività (tipico di Mrs. Becker) che mischia l'aspetto leggero, pulito e bon chic (lenzuola bianche, abiti estivi, Hotel Delano, Magazzini di lusso) con qualcosa di intrigante (Brian Ferry, rossetto, rosa brillante, spy story). Kilian non ci mette ancora di fronte alla perdizione più torbida, siamo solo al tramonto ad un cocktail party dalle atmosfere lascive e un po' patinate, prima che la notte cali sui vizi privati di questa città. First it was Femme with its warm cumin base, then methyl diantilis conjuring up the medicinal smell of clove and now surprise. Maybe you didn't realize that, but the guiding thread for this year's edition was spices, so I wanted to close it with something teasing. In fact what you smelled is the upcoming In the City of Sin, the lastest creation Calice Becker did for the new By Kilian collection In the Garden of Good and Evil. This first chapter, the most unisex one, is described as the entrance of the garden of Eden, an inviting landscape with bright bergamot, rose and fruity notes joined by mysterious details given by the spicy load of cinnamon and cardamom and a touch of incense. I totally agree with your sensations: it's a highly diffusive fragrance (typical from Mrs. Becker) mixing a bright, clean, bon chic surface (white sheets, summer dresses, Delano Hotel, High End Malls) together with something intriguing (Brian Ferry, lipstick, bright pink, spy story). Kilian doesn't let us in front of the dirtiest perdition: we're just at a cocktail party at sunset with patinated lustful atmospheres, just right before the night falls on this town's privite vices. And not let's go with your answers!

Aria fresca all'inizio, piccoli germogli verdi e poi via, sbocciano teneri dianthus, luminosi ma impertinenti come chiodi di garofano e sul finale una soffice nuvola vanigliata: in sintesi eccovi il Methyl Diantilis.

Questa molecola di sintesi brevettata da Givaudan nel 1987 è rimasta un captive per molti anni e solo dal 2002 è disponibile a chiunque. Sono contento vi sia piaciuta perchè la sua bellezza è l'ennesima dimostrazione che quello che esce dal laboratorio non è per forza innaturale o cattivo.

La struttura di questo fenolo è simile alla vanillina e venne scoperto casualmente mentre cercavano un odorante alla vaniglia che non macchiasse. Per il suo tono speziato viene considerato un sostituto dell'isoeugenolo (che profuma di chiodo di garofano) purtroppo caduto vittima dell'IFRA come potenziale allergene. Seguendo le restrizioni infatti sarebbe impossibile oggi concepire profumi ricchi di eugenolo come Bellodgia di Ernest Daltroff o L'Air du Temps di Francis Fabron senza sostituti. L'aroma che sprigiona è talmente sfaccettato da creare l'illusione di una base alla stregua del della famosa Dianthine composta nel 1902 da Philippe Chuit e Martin Naef. Certo il profilo olfattivo è molto diverso ma anche il Methyl Diantilis allude al garofano offrendone la piccantezza tostata con sfaccettature floreali, poudré e vanigliate. Per darvi un'idea del suo impatto in una fragranza, pensate a Felanilla di Pierre Guillaume dove smussa l'aspetto medicinale dello zafferano, oppure ancora a L'Heure Convoitée di Cartier dove Mathilde Laurent l'ha usata per vestire d'eleganza la fragola. Qui poi il finale talcato si incastra a perfezione nella base sostenendo l'iris con un effetto latteo raffinatissimo. Bravi quindi ad aver citato colori luminosi, animali teneri, luoghi costieri, tessuti leggeri e semplicità, ma anche un tocco drammatico o l'eleganza decadente dandy con accenni golosi.

Cool air at first, little green gems and then here we go, tender dianthus bloom, luminous yet saucy like cloves and it ends in a soft vanilla cloud: in a word Methyl Diantilis.

This synthetic molecule patented by Givaudan in 1987 has been a captive for several years and it has become available only in 2002. I'm happy you liked it because its beauty is once more a proof that what comes out of the lab is not absolutely ugly or unnatural.

The structure of this phenol is similar to vanillin and it has been discovered by chance while researching on a non discoloring vanilla odorant. For its spicyness it is also considered a substitute for isoeugenol (smelling of clove) unfortunately become another IFRA's victim as a potential allergen. In fact according to restrictions it would be impossible nowadays to conceive eugenol loaded scents like Ernest Daltroff 's Bellodgia or L'Air du Temps by Francis Fabron without substitutes. The smell it exudes is so multi-faceted it creates the illusion of a base like the case of the famous Dianthine composed in 1902 by Philippe Chuit and Martin Naef. Of course the olfactory profile is different but also Methyl Diantilis refers to carnation offering its roasted pungency together with floral, powdery and vanillic facets. To have an idea of how it impacts on a composizion, think of Pierre Guillaume's Felanilla where it smooths the sharp medicinal aspect of saffron, or again Cartier's L'Heure Convoitée where Mathilde Laurent used it to smartly dress a strawberry. Moreover here the powdery trail perfectly matches the base empowering the iris with a very ferined milkiness. So bravo naming light colours, tender animals, feathers, coastal places, light fabrics and simplicity, but also a dramatic touch or the decadent dandy elegance with yummy hints.

Echeggiavano ancora le bombe della seconda guerra mondiale quando nel 1943 per lanciare la neonata "Rochas Parfums" Marcel Rochas ed il socio Albert Gosset chiesero ad Edmond Roudnitska di creare un profumo. Roudnitska stava già lavorando da tempo ad uno chypre fruttato con rosa, gelsomino, un tocco di sandalo ed ambra grigia. Certo uno chypre lattonico non era una novità, Mitsouko docet, ma egli osò spingersi oltre usando il famoso prunol extra: una base da lui ideata come una prugna polposa,  ipermatura e decadente, quasi confettata. La fragranza proposta da Roudnitska fondeva classicismo e provocazione, classe e sensualità con il sapore esotico, speziato ed carnale del cumino qui dosato nel fondo fino a sfiorare l'effetto ristorante indiano. Lo shock olfattivo fu tale che Marcel Rochas accettò la fragranza senza indugio. Marcel, che all'epoca vestiva le dive di Hollywood, chiamò il profumo Femme in onore alle belle donne ed in particolare alla sua cara Helène, incontrata pochi anni prima chez Paul Poiret. Per vestire la fragranza pensò alla più femmina delle sue clienti di allora, Mae West in guepière nera fu infatti l'ispirazione per le forme del flacone ed il motivo in pizzo della scatola. Lanciata in origine in parfum, parfum de toilette e eau de cologne, la fragranza si trova ancora in commercio ma è stata riformulata nel 1989. Invece quella che avete sentito è una eau de cologne vintage degli anni '70. Il profumo è talmente un capolavoro che ancora dopo 80 anni ci parla di gran femminilità e classe e lo avete colto tutti. Bravi!

The WWII bombs were still echoing while in 1943 Marcel Rochas and his partner Albert Gosset aiming to launch the newborn "Rochas Parfums" asked Edmond Roudnitska to create a perfume for them. Roudnitska was already working on a fruity chypre with rose, jasmin, a pinch of sandalwood and ambergris. Of course there was no news in making a lactonic chypre, Mitsouko docet, but he had the gupts to push it further using the famous prunol extra: a base he conceived like a pulpy overriped plum, decadent and almost jam-like. The fragrance Roudnitska proposed joined classicism and provocation, class and sensuality with the esotic, spicy and carnal taste of cumin dosed here in the base keeping it one step away from the indian restaurant effect. It was such an olfactory shock that Marcel Rochas accepted it as it was. Marcel, who was dressing all the Hollywood Divas of the time, called the perfume Femme to pay hommage to beautiful women and in particular to his dearest Helène that he met few years before chez Paul Poiret. To dress it he thougnt of the most feminine of his clients back in time: Mae West in a black lace guepière was in fact the inspiration behind the rounded flacon and the lace decoration for the box. Originally released in parfum, parfum de toilette and eau del cologne, the fragrance is still on the shelves but it's been reformulated since 1989. The version I led you smell it's a vintage eau de cologne from the 70's. The perfume is such a masterpiece that it still speaks to us about iperfeminine class after almost 80 years and all of you got it. Bravo!
