One of the most exciting debuts during the last edition of Esxence – The scent of excellence was Lucien Ferrero with his eponymous line which I first reviewed for Çafleurebon and now share here. Unfortunately during the show I missed Monsieur Ferrero, but I was introduced to his beautiful works by his distributor Roberto Drago, who established two years ago Per Fumum Torino, an amazing cultural event about perfume and olfactory culture.
It’s down there in Turin that I got to meet Lucien Ferrero as we both were lecturing for the Osmothèque Versailles about different historic topics: first his conference about Chypres, then it was my turn to talk about “The golden age of Italian perfumery”. Meanwhile we had some time to talk about his creations. For who’s not familiar with his name, Lucien Ferrero spent many years in Grasse with perfumers like Jean-Claude Ellena, and Jean-Claude Gigodot and signed over 50.000 formulas for Expressions Parfumées, some of which were produced and the others are part of the company’s library.

Gattopardo di Antonio Alessandria (2017)
"Siamo vecchi, Chevalley, vecchissimi.

Antonio Alessandria Gattopardo (2017)
"We are old, Chevalley, very old. For more than twenty-five centuries we've been bearing the weight of a superb and heterogeneous civilization" The Leopard, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa
Among woods, definitely patchouli is the most exuberant, and this roaring temper is love or hate just like it happens with great men. Among the new proposals seen in Florence at Pitti Fragranze (finally available), the one that drove patchouli fans fall like me hopelessly mad about it is Gattopardo, Antonio Alessandria‘s latest creation that brings us one more time dancing our way to his beloved Sicily.
The rhythm is given by the famous Verdi’s brilliant waltz Nino Rota wanted for Luchino Visconti’s movie. The poise and the lion’s roar are the ones of the Prince of Salina giving his arm to the beautiful Angelica, luminous like the orange blossoms running through her hair. Looking at Claudia Cardinale and Burt Lancaster twirling around, who’s not fallen helplessly in love with Palermo? Who’s not dreamt for a while to turn back time to 1860 as a guest of the great ball in the opulent halls of Valguarnera-Gangi Palace, vestige of a glorious past?

It was not long after this I smelled Kingdom for the first time back in December 2003 and I still remember it as it was totally different from most of the mainstream offerings. It was the time when most of the permed and-mullet ‘80s scents had been toned down by a decade of galaxolide soapiness. So it’s no wonder it smelled odd and sometimes disturbing. Unlike the more conservative new McQueen gaudy floral housed in the black’n gold feathered bottle, Kingdom was indeed the perfect match to the polarizing creations the enfant terrible of Brit fashion was releasing on his catwalks. So let me share here too this review I wrote for the ÇaFleureBon Modern Masterpieces Serie.

Rose Poivrée di The Different Company (J. C. Ellena, 2000)
The Different Company Rose Poivrée (J. C. Ellena, 2000)
This review appeared in the CaFleureBon Modern Masterpieces last February and I'm happy share it also here.In 2000, when Jean-Claude Ellena started his path as an independent perfumer, founding The Different Company with his long time Grassois colleague Thierry de Baschmakoff, he took the most important step in his aesthetic path. They had worked together previously in 1992, when de Baschmakoff designed for the Italian Jewel Designer Bulgari the frosted green bottle housing Jean-Claude Ellena’s astringently elegant Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert. Since the collaboration worked beautifully (setting the green tea trend that was prevalent in the 90s), it’s no wonder they decided to collaborate on a new perfume company.
The Different Company was unlike anything of its time as they sought to explore a new approach to perfumery. Right after the launch, I recall reading in an interview with M. Ellena “that everybody in the 1990s wanted to smell clean, harmless or sweet as a cookie”. Whilst the idea of associating smell with taste was fashionable, Jean-Claude Ellena took a different approach with using salt and pepper which became the backbone of Rose Poivrée, the mother of all peppery, salty roses of the XXI century.

Sables di Annick Goutal (1985)
![]() |

July is holiday time and in South Europe the coasts are a blast of Mediterranean smells floating in the heat, highlighted by the salty sparkle of sea breeze. There’s a wide range of bushes well representing this image in the perfumer’s palette and a good part of them is also present in many dishes, but definitely immortelle succeeds in conveying the mighty sun at its zenith.
Launched exactly thirtytwo years ago in 1985, Annick Goutal Sables masterfully renders this warm embrace by fearlessly building a unique, revolutionary architecture around immortelle absolute, a raw material Annick certainly met during her training years in Grasse and which she definitely felt in love with.

Green Water di Jacques Fath (1946 - 2015)
![]() |

These were my references in 2015 while thinking what to let people smell during Serial Classic, my workshops about historical or famous fragrances that started or made popular the various olfactory families compared to nowadays interpretations of the same theme.
It ain't easy for sure to find a contemporary embodiment for aromatic hesperides, a family started by Jacques Fath's Green Water.
During the session the original formulation knocked everybody's socks off: the minty refinement of this eau givrée still smells so up-to-date they immediately asked whether it's still available. It almost looks like chez Jacques Fath the creative director Rania Barakat Naim was listening to us: a few months later a major brand repositioning brought back Green Water to its former glory.

Diorella di Christian Dior (E. Roudnitska, 1972)
![]() |

Stylish and emancipated like the main character of Éric Rohmer's Love in the afternoon (L'amour l'après-midi, 1972), the iconic algerian model Zouzou, Diorella teases the most bon chic bon genre chords of a hesperidic chypre accord but twists it with the oddest and most psychedelic fruity notes ever seen before in perfumery. Smelling it is not difficult to imagine the Diorella girl using Chloé's hook-up line with the nicest guy of the class, the one silencing the goo-goo eyed classmates, as though butter wouldn't melt in their mouth.
The dreamy girl of the New Look used to escape to Saint-Trop, she was gealous of her father, made fun of his mistresseser and grew up wearing Diorissimo. In 1972 her daughter is about to take her biology degree and after marching in pants during the student protests and now is leaving to London without permission from her conventional authoritarian parents, claiming so her future to the sound of egalité, liberté, sexualité!

Vero Profumo Naja: danzando coi serpenti

Vero Profumo Naja: snake dance
In nowadays fragrant universe where brands launch several perfumes per year, there's a woman who turned time into the highest form of luxury. Releasing only five perfumes in parfum, voile de parfum and eau de parfum, in ten years Vero Kern took her time to look after every detail seized with a wonderful obsession.
Impossible to remain indifferent, her creations take ho prisoners and for who loves them every launch is a major event. That's why curiosity killed us in the long wait for this decennial at every juicy hint, including golden snakes, shamans, tobacco botanical prints and more Vero scattered through the pleats of social networks.
Like Hop o' My Thumb I followed the small pebbles till Esxence craving to discover Naja, the Jubilee scent.
Leather jacket and glam-rock python glasses, a Vero in great shape welcomes me at her booth. In a quite moment we take the chance to sit and smell together the raw materials featured in the Naja palette: warm, honeyed and hay-like tobacco absolute, but also the pulpy suede of roaring osmanthus absolute. Then the tempting roughness of a special leather base Vero herself concocted together with a summery reconstruction of linden blossom.
As I spray Naja I am amazed: honey, leather and tobacco are there as promised with their deco accent, but moulded by her visionary creativity to a floriental bearing a skin as iridescent as the brand new moult of a cobra.
Just long enough to inhale the sunshine of linden blossoms (a sacred tree in german mythology with healing powers) and topnotes get juicy with sweet melon and its vibrant dew redolent of Diorella that for me is a Linus's branket: it smells of end of school days and the endless daylight of my childhood birthdays.
Naja (pronounced with a French j like in Jean), from the Sanskrit nāga means snake and it's referred to a genus of venomous snakes including the cobra. Naja is also an old cigarets brand advertised as "oriental tobacco" very popular in Paris before WWII.
This oriental tobacco is right what starts pulsing, more manly and spicy with nutmeg in the heart bringing one more example of how skillfully Vero masters opposites, masculine and feminine, smoke addiction and healing virtues of tobacco well represented by the mortal coils of the snake winding around the rod of Asclepius or in the infinite symbol on the Naja bottle wishing many more creations to come.
Tobacco is a powerful psychotrope also invonved in the Natives rituals. The snake, later charged of evil meanings in the Christian culture, since the Minoan civilization was a symbol of procreative force representing in the snake dance both the sacred masculine and feminine. The Hopi and Navajo tribes from Arizona believe snakes to be otherworldly messengers. Invoking their vital force and the rain, shamans dance letting the reptiles enter their mouths and releasing them then so they can carry prayers to the spirits underground.
The powdery, intoxicating trail of Naja gives way to a uberchic suede, more angelic and yet dangerous as the leather in Tabac Blond joining what's left from fruits and honey to the cold scales of vetiver that Vero masterfully showed in Onda.
I spray Naja and let it wind around my neck working out its ritual. It finds its way inside me to listen to my thoughts, dancing to the rhythm of my heart under my skin before hovering to bring them to the spirits who can understand the magical language of perfumery.

Esxence 2017: Scent Diary #2
Jacques Fath

When I learned first about Lilas Exquis and the inspiration art director Rania Barakat Naim gave to perfumer Luca Maffei, I couldn’t help but thinking to Bettina Graziani in a lilac satin dress posing to the camera with her nose up in the air. Out of the usual flowers, this hyper-realistic lilac soliflore vividly renders blossoms drenched in raindrops and French joie de vivre. Empowered by outdoorsy and leathery facets of violet leaves, I wouldn’t be surprised to smell it also on dandies as a floral summer cologne.
