La prima volta che ho visto nel 2015 la commedia drammatica australiana "The Dressmaker", nella mia testa l'ho subito associata ad un profumo. Il film in sé non è un capolavoro ma racconta la storia di una vendetta davvero singolare e mentre la protagonista Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) sfoggia un guardaroba impeccabile creato dalla costumista premio Oscar Margot Wilson per rievocare il meglio del New Look di Balenciaga, Balmain, Dior e Fath, non si può fare a meno di immaginarla avvolta in una scia di Jolie Madame mentre trascina la sua macchina da cucire per la cittadina polverosa.

When I first saw the 2015 Australian revenge comedy-drama "The Dressmaker", I immediately got a scent association popping to my mind. The film itself is not a masterpiece, but it is one of a kind and while the main character Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) unfolds a pitch-percect wardrobe from the award-winning costume designer Margot Wilson that quotes the best New Look outfits from Balenciaga, Balmain, Dior and Fath, you can't help but thinking of her leaving trails of Jolie Madame while she carries her sewing machine across the dusty hometown.

Se vi è piaciuta la prima parte di questo ritratto di Germaine Cellier, di certo gli inizi della sua carriera di profumiere vi appassioneranno, specialmente gli anni in Roure Bertrand Dupont, che non sempre sono stati facili. Dopo una brevissima esperienza nella profumeria funzionale presso Colgate-Palmolive, nel 1943 Germaine Cellier torna in Roure.
Fino a tutti gli anni '20 la profumeria era dettata da nomi come Houbigant, Guerlain, Coty e Caron. Solo da pochi lustri le griffe di moda si erano avventurate nel reame olfattivo e sarti come Poiret, Patou, Lanvin e Chanel si erano direttamente rivolti a profumieri in un rapporto privilegiato e quasi esclusivo. Così Roure e gli altri produttori, si erano essenzialmente limitati a fornire questi ultimi con materie prime naturali e di sintesi, basi e specialità innovative per l'epoca. Ma il vento stava cambiando.

If you enjoyed the first part of this portrait of Germaine Cellier, surely her first years as a perfumer will thrill you, specially the years spent in Roure Bertrand Dupont, that ain't always easy. After a brief period in functional perfumery at Colgate-Palmolive, in 1943 Germaine Cellier gets back to Roure.
Till the end of the 1920s perfumery was ruled by names like Houbigant, Guerlain, Coty and Caron. It was only since a decade that fashion houses ventured in the olfactory realm and designers like Poiret, Patou, Lanvin and Chanel directly collaborated with perfumers in a special, almost exclusive relationship. So Roure and other producers, essentially confined themselves to provide them with natural and synthetic raw materials, innovative bases and specialties for the time. But the wind was changing.

Settembre 1945, le cicatrici della guerra sono ancora fresche a Parigi. Alla fermata della metro Étoile un uomo si avvicina a Yuri Gutsatz: "Voi non mi conoscete? Sono Jean Carles. Cercate lavoro?". Anche se non avete mai sentito parlare di Yuri Gutsatz, credo basti questo aneddoto per capire che parliamo di un grande della profumeria dal destino avventuroso, ma soprattutto che ci ha lasciato un grande insegnamento sull'arte della profumeria.
In seguito a questo incontro, Yuri Gutsatz lavorerà per oltre trent'anni in Givaudan (allora Roure Bertrand Fils et Justin Dupont), ma soprattutto fonderà nel 1975 Le Jardin Retrouvé, il primo marchio di profumeria indipendente appena prima che Jean Laporte ne seguisse l'esempio con L'Artisan Parfumeur.

September 1945, the scars of WWI are still fresh in Parigi. At the subway Étoile Platform a man comes close to Yuri Gutsatz: "Don't you know me? I am Jean Carles. Are you looking for a job?". Even if you've never heard before about Yuri Gutsatz, I think this anecdote is enough to let you understand we're talking about a great guy of perfumery with an adventurous life, but above all who left us a great lesson about perfumery as an art.
After that meeting, Yuri Gutsatz will work at Givaudan (Roure Bertrand Fils et Justin Dupont back in time) for more than thirty years and later in 1975 will enstablish Le Jardin Retrouvé, the first independent niche perfume house right before Jean Laporte would follow his example with L'Artisan Parfumeur.

Caro Babbo Natale... Quante volte da piccoli avete scritto queste parole seguite dai vostri desideri e dai vostri pensieri più leggeri su quanto siete stati buoni? Anche se sono un po' cresciuto, ancora oggi provo a scrivere di queste letterine ogni tanto. Anche se di questi tempi la biada per le renne è sempre più cara e Babbo Natale stenta ad arrivare. Nonostante tutto, è bello poterci credere, così provo a scrivergli poche righe.

Even if these days the forage for the raindeers has become more and more expensive and Santa Claus hardly finds his road. Nevertheless it's good to believe everything can happen, so I try to drop him a few lines.

Y di Yves Saint Laurent (1964): un truc en plumes

Ci sono profumi che entrano nella nostra vita senza chiedere permesso a un'età in cui non abbiamo altri strumenti per capirli che il naso. Grazie a mia nonna paterna ho conosciuto Y di Yves Saint Laurent negli anni '70. Bella e vanitosa, il suo ricordo e più legato a quella scia verde che a grandi slanci affettivi e forse è per quello che è entrato nel mio spazio emozionale come una specie di abbraccio invisibile. A gennaio 2014 questo chypre glorioso ha compiuto cinquant'anni, perciò voglio festeggiarlo ballando con una delle muse più Saint Laurent che mai: Zizi Jeanmaire!

There are perfumes that step into our life without asking permission at an age when we don't have anything but our nose to understand them. Thanks to my paternal grandmother I met Y by Yves Saint Laurent during the '70s. Beautiful and vain, her memory is more related to that green trail rather than to bursts of love and maybe that's why it entered my emotional world like a sort of invisible embrace. On January 2014 this glorious chypre celebrated its 50th birthday, let's celebrate dancing with one of the muses more Saint Laurent than ever: Zizi Jeanmaire!
