Le Jardin Retrouvé (Y. Gutsatz 1975-2016)

Settembre 1945, le cicatrici della guerra sono ancora fresche a Parigi. Alla fermata della metro Étoile un uomo si avvicina a Yuri Gutsatz: "Voi non mi conoscete? Sono Jean Carles. Cercate lavoro?". Anche se non avete mai sentito parlare di Yuri Gutsatz, credo basti questo aneddoto per capire che parliamo di un grande della profumeria dal destino avventuroso, ma soprattutto che ci ha lasciato un grande insegnamento sull'arte della profumeria.
In seguito a questo incontro, Yuri Gutsatz lavorerà per oltre trent'anni in Givaudan (allora Roure Bertrand Fils et Justin Dupont), ma soprattutto fonderà nel 1975 Le Jardin Retrouvé, il primo marchio di profumeria indipendente appena prima che Jean Laporte ne seguisse l'esempio con L'Artisan Parfumeur.

September 1945, the scars of WWI are still fresh in Parigi. At the subway Étoile Platform a man comes close to Yuri Gutsatz: "Don't you know me? I am Jean Carles. Are you looking for a job?". Even if you've never heard before about Yuri Gutsatz, I think this anecdote is enough to let you understand we're talking about a great guy of perfumery with an adventurous life, but above all who left us a great lesson about perfumery as an art.
After that meeting, Yuri Gutsatz will work at Givaudan (Roure Bertrand Fils et Justin Dupont back in time) for more than thirty years and later in 1975 will enstablish Le Jardin Retrouvé, the first independent niche perfume house right before Jean Laporte would follow his example with L'Artisan Parfumeur.

Chypre di Coty (1917)

Chypre Royale, Chypre de Paris o semplicemente Chypre sono solo alcuni dei nomi che fluttuavano nell'aria ad inizio '900. Roger et Gallet, Guerlain ed altri prima di loro avevano giocato con le note di questo accordo che appare già nei formulari veneti del '500 e prima ancora un po' in tutto il mediterraneo. Mi son sempre chiesto cosa avesse di più questo François Coty per fare del suo Chypre il fondamento iconico di una intera famiglia olfattiva che avrebbe rivoluzionato la profumeria dei decenni successivi. La ricostruzione dell'Osmothèque mi ha dato un primo indizio ma solo indossandolo sono riuscito a capire il segreto del suo successo. Devo ringraziare per questo una cara amica che qualche mese fa mi ha lasciato di stucco regalandomi una bottiglia di eau de cologne degli anni '50.

Coty Chypre (1917)

Chypre Royale, Chypre de Paris or simply Chypre are only few of the names floating in the air at the beginning of the XX century. Roger et Gallet, Guerlain and others before them already played with the notes of this accord that was already spotted on the XVI century venitian pefume manuals and probably since ever in all the mediterranean area. I've always wondered what's the hype about François Coty and his Chypre to make it the iconic seed of an olfactory family which would have marked perfumery of the next decades. The reconstruction from the Osmothèque gave me some hints but only wearing it I could understand the secret of its success. I must thank for this a dear friend who left me breathless few months ago giving to me as a present an eau de cologne bottle from the '50s.

La pubblicità ci ha diseducati per decenni promettendo che il tal profumo, non importa quale, farà cadere gli altri ai nostri piedi. Così il piacere perduto del profumo si è sublimato in altro. Per questo il primo passo per capire il profumo è riscoprire che profumarsi è soprattutto un piacere personale. Due spruzzi del liquido giusto sono ben di più del tocco prima di uscire per sentirsi in ordine, sono una goduria che stuzzica i sensi, la memoria e la fantasia. "Dateci il profumo, la gioia e le risa; le prediche del marketing e gli shampoo il giorno dopo" insisterebbe Lord Byron per avere quello che sto indossando in queste sere con grande piacere e che segna il debutto di una nuova linea: Hedonist di Viktoria Minya.

Advertisment has diseducated us since decades promising that a perfume, it doesn't matter which one will throw others to our feet. So the lost pleasure for perfume has been replaced by something else. That's why the first step to understand perfumes is rediscovering scents are above all a private pleasure. Two sprays of the right juice are far more than the final touch making you feel clean before going out, they're a bliss teasing senses, memory and fantasy all day long. "Let us have perfume, mirth and laughter, marketing sermons and shampoos the day after" would insist Lord Byron to have what I'm wearing these evenings with great satisfaction, the debut fragrances of a new line: Hedonist by Viktoria Minya.

Nel 1991 Parfums de Rosine riapparve sotto i portici del Palais Royal ma l'unico legame col passato era la R maiuscola presa dal flacone della Rose de Rosine. Non era rimasta traccia delle fragranze e dell'estetica avant-garde di Poiret, così Marie Helene Rogeon decise di riscrivere la storia di Rosine con creazioni contemporanee declinate sul tema della rosa. Solo di recente la storia del marchio è stata riscoperta grazie all'impegno dell'Osmothèque, come ha sottolineato Jean-Claude Ellena facendo gli onori di casa. Rapito dalla vivacità del racconto di Jean Kerléo, lo seguo a ritroso nel tempo e in un attimo siamo agli anni '70 quando, appena arrivato al quartier generale di Patou presso Saint Ouen, ritrovò un cofanetto di profumi dimenticato da Henri Alméras. Grazie a quello e alle formule che Yuri Gutsatz aveva ottenuto per pura fatalità, ma soprattutto grazie alla passione di Jean Kerléo e Guy Robert da quello scrigno sono affiorati undici dei trentasei tesori di Rosine di cui si conosce l'esistenza.

In 1991 Parfums de Rosine reappeared under the arcades of the Palais Royal but the only heritage from the past was the capital R stolen from the Rose de Rosine flacon. There was nothing left of Poiret avantgarde aesthetics and fragrances, so Marie Helene Rogeon decided to write from scratch a new story for Rosine with contemporary creations based on the rose theme. Only recently the history of the brand has been rediscovered thanks to the Osmothèque activity, as pointed out by Jean-Claude Ellena while welcoming the guests attending the conference.
Enchanted by Jean Kerléo's lively telling, I follow him going back in time and in while we're in the '70s when arriving at the Patou headquarter in Saint Ouen, he found a box with perfumes left by Henri Alméras. Thanks to this and to the formulas that Yuri Gutsatz got by chance long time before, but above all thanks to Jean Kerléo and Guy Robert's commitment, from that case emerged eleven of the thirtysix known Rosine jewels.

Uno dei vantaggi dell'essere amico dell'Osmothèque Versailles è quello di ricevere gli inviti a partecipare alle interessanti conferenze che organizza durante l'anno. Purtroppo dall'Italia non è facile andarci e spesso finisco per mangiarmi le mani come quest'inverno quando ho letto che Jean Kerléo avrebbe tenuto una conferenza sui misteriosi Parfums de Rosine. Alcune occasioni capitano una volta nella vita, altre per fortuna ti danno una seconda possibilità. Infatti il Museo della Profumeria di Grasse ha reso possibile che questo incontro si ripetesse per l'inaugurazione della mostra Paul Poiret (1879-1944) Couturier Parfumeur. Stavolta non potevo lasciarmela scappare, così giovedì scorso sono partito in compagnia della mia amica Nyneve, altra temeraria appassionata di profumi. Direzione Grasse, La Gardenia va Chez Poiret!

One of the advantages of being a friend of the Osmothèque Versailles is they send you invitations to take part to the interesting conferences they give during the year. Unfortunately it's not easy to join them coming from Italy, and often I end up kicking my ass like this winter when I read Jean Kerléo would have given a lecture about the mysterious Parfums de Rosine. Some occasions happen once in a lifetime, luckily others give you a second chance. In fact the Grasse Museum of Perfumery has made this event possible again to coincide with the opening of the exibition Paul Poiret (1879-1944) Couturier Parfumeur. This time I couldn't miss it, so the last Thursday I left together with my friend Nyneve, another reckless fragrance lover. Direction Grasse, La Gardenia goes Chez Poiret!

Non segnalo spessissimo le iniziative dell'Osmothèque solo perchè sembrano piuttosto lontane dall'Italia. La conferenza di un paio d'ore che si terrà a Versailles sabato 16 marzo alle 10.00 però è un'occasione imperdibile per i fortunati che possono partecipare e quindi ve la segnalo. PAUL POIRET

Paul Poiret, celebre couturier dell'inizio del XX secolo, precursore dello stile Art Déco, aprì la sua casa di moda nel 1903, all'età di 25 anni.

Otto anni dopo, egli fu il primo couturier a lanciare una gamma intera di profumi sotto il marchio Les Parfums de Rosine, dal nome della figlia primogenita.

Innanzitutto nel 1929 egli lanciò 36 profumi grazie alla collaborazione coi profumieri Maurice Shaller e in seguito Henri Alméras che più tardi lavorerà per Jean Patou per cui creerà Joy fra gli altri.

Grazie a Yuri Gutsatz, i Parfums de Rosine sono stati ritrovati e 11 di questi ricostruiti all'Osmothèque fra cui Nuit de Chine, Le fruit défendu, Arlequinade…

I don't advertize often the conferences at the Osmothèque only because they often seem quite far from Italy. PAUL POIRET

Paul Poiret, famous fashion designer at the beginning of XX century, forerunner of the Art Déco style, opened his fashion house in 1903, while he was 25.
Eight years later, he was the first fashion designer to launch a full range of perfumes under the brand Les Parfums de Rosine, from the name of his eldest daughter.
Just in 1929 he launched like 36 perfumes under the collaboration with the perfumers Maurice Shaller at first and later on with Henri Alméras that would have joined Jean Patou later to create Joy and many others.
Thanks to Yuri Gutsatz, the Parfums de Rosine have been rediscovered and 11 of them have been remade at the Osmothèque among which Nuit de Chine, Le fruit défendu, Arlequinade…
