Un brindisi per Fragrances of the World: intervista con Michael Edwards (3)

A toast for Fragrances of the World: interview with Michael Edwards (3)

"My first advice will be polarize, go for something adventurous"

While reading the second part of Michael's interview, I guess many perfume lovers wished everybody in the perfume industry would see his advice given the boredom of many new launches. Finally let's hear what Michael said about the fragrance market, EU regulations on raw materials and more.

E: Your fragrance classification helped a loto of retailers selling fragrances and nowadays more and more they rely on your guide to advice their customers also to find fragrance substituites for their beloved discontinued juices. But how the retail model has changed during these 30 years and how it will evolve in the future?
M: Very interesting question. The fragrance that started the whole business changing was Charlie in 1973 because before Charlie, perfume was a gift: men mostly bought perfume and gave it to women to be used on special occasions. But it was about that time that women started in the western world to move from home to office, they had money, a new generation. Charlie was the one in the States and then in Europe that triggered this thing: “Oh it’s so nice, I’m gonna wear it. I may start to wear it during the day”.

L'Heure Attendue (Jean Patou - 1946)

L'Heure Attendue (1949)

L'Heure Attendue (Jean Patou - 1946)

L'Heure Attendue ad (1949)
The end of WWII was an awaited moment by both winners and vanquished. The conflict heavily tried the Europe, torn apart by the angst well pictured in artworks like Guernica. On the other hand when the war ended perfumery would have fed the longing for serenity and optimism with great energy also glancing again overseas. Even a sorceress skilled in ferocoius poisons à la Bandit like Germaine Cellier would have concocted her brightest juice for Nina Ricci, Coeur-Joie's sunny violet. It's time for hopeful names like Avon's Wishing, Air Nouveau (new air) by Houbigant and many others. The house of Jean Patou replied with L'Heure Attendue, the awaited hour surprising with unexpected paths instead of going for lightness.

I Parfums de Rosine (1911-1929)

The Parfums de Rosine (1911-1929)

Arlequinade (Henri Alméras - 1919)
In 1991 Parfums de Rosine reappeared under the arcades of the Palais Royal but the only heritage from the past was the capital R stolen from the Rose de Rosine flacon. There was nothing left of Poiret avantgarde aesthetics and fragrances, so Marie Helene Rogeon decided to write from scratch a new story for Rosine with contemporary creations based on the rose theme. Only recently the history of the brand has been rediscovered thanks to the Osmothèque activity, as pointed out by Jean-Claude Ellena while welcoming the guests attending the conference.
Enchanted by Jean Kerléo's lively telling, I follow him going back in time and in while we're in the '70s when arriving at the Patou headquarter in Saint Ouen, he found a box with perfumes left by Henri Alméras. Thanks to this and to the formulas that Yuri Gutsatz got by chance long time before, but above all thanks to Jean Kerléo and Guy Robert's commitment, from that case emerged eleven of the thirtysix known Rosine jewels.

Paul Poiret (1879-1944)
La Gardenia va Chez Poiret

Caricatura (A. Barrele - 1919)

Paul Poiret (1879-1944)
La Gardenia goes Chez Poiret

Caricature (A. Barrele 1919)
One of the advantages of being a friend of the Osmothèque Versailles is they send you invitations to take part to the interesting conferences they give during the year. Unfortunately it's not easy to join them coming from Italy, and often I end up kicking my ass like this winter when I read Jean Kerléo would have given a lecture about the mysterious Parfums de Rosine. Some occasions happen once in a lifetime, luckily others give you a second chance. In fact the Grasse Museum of Perfumery has made this event possible again to coincide with the opening of the exibition Paul Poiret (1879-1944) Couturier Parfumeur. This time I couldn't miss it, so the last Thursday I left together with my friend Nyneve, another reckless fragrance lover. Direction Grasse, La Gardenia goes Chez Poiret!

Vintage Jean Patou Joy: loves and roses

Manon - J. Massenet

Does it happen you to make liberal associations between perfumes and other art expressions too? Sometimes it's a painting or a picture, some others it's music. Often it happens by chance and the connection it's so evident that's impossible to ignore. Just by chance I found the most famous Jean Patou
perfume, Joy, in its original eau de toilette formula one week before receiving an invitation for the Scala to see Manon by Massenet. The invitation sung by Manon to enjoy youth and the french taste for which Massenet and Patou were masters (Massenet died in 1912, the year Patou started creating dresses) are just two of the many reasons of this perfect match.

Molecole d'amore

Love molecules

The kiss - Auguste Rodin
Love stories never happen to leave us cold and whether they are fairitales or reality, dramas or happy ends, it doesn't matter. What's sure is many perfumers tried to bottle their essence. The 8th art is scattered with masterpieces inspired by love stories, first of all one of the progenitors of modern perfumery, the revolutionary Jicky. In 1889 Aimé Guerlain used the most beautiful natural raw materials like bergamot and lavender from Grass soaking them in an undecent load of civet. He joined also the most groundbreaking synthetics at that time, cumarine and ethyl-vanillin to conconc an abstract fragrance never seen before. Jicky, a nickname Aimé put to his nephew Jacques, was also the name of a young girl he fall hopelessly in love with while he was studying in England. At his proposal of marriage her parents refused, so he got back to France and never married. The golden aura of youth and the passionate struggling memory of this strong and unfortunate feeling relived in this brutal and sweet masterpiece.
