Rahele di Neela Vermeire Creations (B. Duchaufour 2016)

Una cara amica che conduce orgogliosamente una bella profumeria nelle Marche dice sempre che, mentre maneggia e spruzza un flacone di profumo, è come se tenesse fra le mani qualcosa di più di un semplice liquido profumato. C'è il cuore di chi lo ha fatto in ogni bottiglia, e questo è ancora più vero se si parla di Neela Vermeire, la direttrice creative del marchio omonimo. Impossibile pensare alle sue creazioni senza associarle a lei visto che Neela riesce a mettere un po' del suo spirito in ogni fragranza che porta il suo nome.
Condividendo la sua passione per la musica classica, non ho potuto fare a meno di annusare l'ultima creazione in questi giorni in arrivo nei punti vendita, Rahele senza pensare alle tinte pastello degli interni exotici Louis XV che incorniciano in riccioli d'oro moretti coi turbanti, rinoceronti ed elefanti su specchi di madreperla. Delicato eppure opulento come la musica di Jean-Philippe Rameau, il profumo danza come damigelle abbigliate in tessuti a piccoli motivi floreali che sembrano rubati ai decori Moghul.

Since it's finally available on the shelves, I am proud to share with you my review appeared the last month on ÇaFleureBon.
A dear friend who proudly runs a beautiful perfume shop always says while holding a perfume bottle, spraying it, she holds in her hands more than a fragrant liquid. The heart of who made it is in every flacon and this is more than truth when speaking of Creative Director Neela Vermeire eponymous brand. One cannot think of her creations and herself as Neela puts a little piece of her soul in every scent that bears her name.
Sharing her passion for classical music, I couldn’t help but smelling her newest and soon to be released perfume Rahele and thinking of pastel tinged Louis XV exotic interiors framing in gold swirls peasants in turban, rhinoceros and elephants over mother of pearl mirrors. Delicate yet opulent like Jean-Philippe Rameau’s music, the perfume dances like damsels dressed in small floral pattern textiles almost stolen from the Moghul ornaments.

La passione per i profumi nell'era dei social network ha i suoi vantaggi: puoi imparare facilmente guardando le immagini, leggendo e confrontandoti con persone ben informate da tutto il mondo. Di recente ho avuto la fortuna di entrare in contatto con una donna squisita, la più grande collezionista russa di profumi vintage, nonché collega blogger di aromablog.ru: Ekaterina Khmelevskaya. È stata così generosa da farmi sentire uno dei Guerlain più rari che reca l'etichetta misteriosa Chypre 53.
Il nome in se è alquanto curioso. Gli Champs Elysées sono vicini a Rue Cambon, ma qui non siamo chez Chanel che metteva dei numeri come portafortuna sui flaconi di profumo. Chez Guerlain hanno sempre preferito nomi ispirati alla natura, romantici oppure esotici come Violette de Madame, Une fleure qui meurt o Shalimar. Allora come mai questo nome?
Molto prima di Le Labo, la mia prima supposizione era che 53 potesse riferirsi al numero degli ingredient utilizzati che significherebbe una composizione abbastanza stilizzata per l'epoca.

The passion for perfumes in the social network era has its advantages: you can easily learn by looking at pictures, reading and discussing with knowledgeable people all over the world. Recently I have been so lucky to get in touch with a lovely woman who's one of the finest Russian vintage perfume collectors and the fellow blogger behind aromablog.ru: Ekaterina Khmelevskaya. She's been so nice to let me smell one of the rarest Guerlain bearing the mystery label Chypre 53.
The name itself is pretty curious. Champs Elysées are close to Rue Cambon, but we're not chez Chanel who put numbers as lucky charm on perfume bottles. Chez Guerlain they always went for nature inspired, romantic or exotic names like Violette de Madame, Une fleure qui meurt or Shalimar. So why this name?
Long time before Le Labo, my first guess was 53 could refer to the number of the ingredient, which would mean a pretty stylized composition for the time.

Eau de Magnolia di Frédéric Malle (Carlos Benaïm 2014)

Da sempre l'estate è la mia stagione preferita non solo per la fine della scuola e l'idea delle vacanze, ma per l'esplosione di colori e profumi che aspetto con trepidazione il resto dell'anno. La stagione è impazzita quest'anno, eppure l'aroma dolce e rustico del fieno maturo e delle messi ha riempito la campagna padana alla fine. Il suo contrappunto civilizzato invece divampa nei giardini con l'impertinenza delle magnolie, un aroma paradossare di albicocche infuse di pompelmo e te verde macchiato latte che riesce a bucare anche l'afa catramata dell'agosto milanese.
La magnolia è un dinosauro botanico: si dice infatti che i primi fiori apparsi sulla terra fossero antenati delle magnolie con la stessa simmetria perfetta per cui qualsiasi asse si scelga, si hanno sempre due metà esatte. Questo ha suggerito a Frédéric Malle il nome della mia candela preferita della linea: Jurassic Flower, creata da Carlos Benaïm a partire dall'headspace della magnolia grandiflora.

Since ever summer is my favourite season not only because of the end of school year and the forecoming holidays but for the explosion of colours and smells I long for the rest of the year. We had quite a weird season this year and nevertheless the rough and sweet smell of mature hay and crops filled the padanian countriside at last. Its civilized counterpart instead are the insolent magnolias spreading throughout the gardens their strange aroma of grapefruit drenched apricots and milk dashed green tea so intense to pierce the tarry sultriness of August in Milan..
Magnolia is a botanical fossil: in fact it is said that the first flowers bloomed on earth were ancestors of magnolias featuring the same perfect simmetry that makes them split in two identical parts no matter along which axis you chose to dissect them. This provided Frédéric Malle with the name for my favourite candle in the line: Jurassic Flower, created by Carlos Benaïm from the headspace of magnolia grandiflora.

Cordon Vert Eau de Cologne di Coty

L'anno scorso, mentre cercavo di immergermi nel mondo di Edmond Roudnitska e dei suoi capolavori, è nata la curiosità per alcune creazioni di François Coty al di la dei celebri L'Origan, Ambre Antique e Chypre. Tutto è partito da Serge Heftler-Louiche che aveva fondato Dior Parfums dopo essere stato segretario personale di Coty e direttore amministrativo di Coty Francia. Lui amava particolarmente Cordon Vert al punto da chiedere a Roudnitska di ispirarsi a lui per il terzo profumo Dior, Eau Fraîche. Purtroppo non sono ancora riuscito a sentire una versione intatta di Eau Fraîche, ma da allora il nome di Cordon Vert ha iniziato a rullare nella mia testa come un tamburo. Quando poi mi sono ricordato che persino Guy Robert nel suo Le Sens du Parfum lo inserisce fra i capolavori della profumeria, non ho potuto non andare a caccia di un flacone.

Coty Cordon Vert Eau de Cologne

The last year while I was digging into the world of Edmond Roudnitska and his masterpieces, I also began to be curious about some of François Coty cretions out of the famous L'Origan, Ambre Antique and Chypre. Everything started with Serge Heftler-Louiche who enstablished Dior Parfums after working as Coty's personal secretary and managing director for Coty France. He was partifularly fond of Cordon Vert to the point he asked Mr. Roudnitska to take inspiration from it for the third Dior perfume, Eau Fraîche. Unfortunately I've not yet come across a well preserved bottle of Eau Fraîche, but since then the name of Cordon Vert rolled more and more like a drum in my head. Later on when I remembered even Guy Robert puts it in the selection of perfume masterpieces in his Le Sens du Parfum, I couldn't help but hunting for a bottle.

Il caldo improvviso che ha infuocato Milano nelle scorse settimane, mi ha fatto passare di colpo dal giubbino alla mezza manica. In mancanza delle vacanze vere che arriveranno più avanti, anche il mio naso ha cominciato ad aver voglia di profumi più freschi e vacanzieri, così sono andato a ripescare uno dei pochi marini che porto con piacere, Tirrenico, creato da Maria Candida Gentile per Profumi del Forte. Non lo indossavo da un po' e per curiosità sono andato a rileggere la recensione che ho scritto nel 2008 per Perfumecritic. Mi ci sono ritrovato in pieno e, siccome non è più online, ho deciso di ripubblicarne un estratto qui.

Tirrenico by Profumi del Forte (2008)

The sudden heat melting Milan during the last weeks made me pass all at once from jackets to t-shirts. While waiting for a real vacation that will only come in the next months, also my nose started craving for chilling holiday perfumes, so I went for one of the few marines I enjoy, Tirrenico, created by Maria Candida Gentile for Profumi del Forte. I didn't wear it for quite a while and for sake of curiosity I went back reading the review I wrote back in 2008 for Perfumecritic. I could still fully agree with it, so since it's not online anymore, I decided to publish an excerpt here.

Tralala, i vincitori e qualche riflessione

Mentre sorteggiavo i nomi degli amici che hanno lasciato un commento alla mia recensione di Tralala, riflettevo su quanto sia stato fortunato a crescere in un mondo dove bellezza, creatività e qualità venivano prima di tutto. Anche Davide, Giampaolo Jicky Baldoni, Lorenzo, Karin e Asali sono fortunati perché riceveranno un'anteprima dell'ultima creatione di Duchaufour. In Voluptas Mors - S. Dalì/P. Halsman

Mi ritengo fortunato per aver potuto godere la bellezza di capolavori come Chypre, L'Heure Bleue, No. 5, Joy e tutto il fiorire di bellezza, tradizione e conoscenza a cui hanno dato vita. Da sempre gli elementi fondamentali di questo patrimonio sono le materie prime, naturali e sintetiche che hanno reso possibile scolpire nell'aria forme olfattive perfette. Non ci sarebbero stati gli chypre senza muschio di quercia, così come non ci sarebbero stati florientali senza eugenoli.
Da decenni un cappio si sta stringendo al collo della profumeria, un cappio teso a doppia mano dall'IFRA e dai legislatori europei che nel tempo ha ristretto di fatto o di diritto la tavolozza del profumiere. Certo siamo grati per aver proibito alcune materie dimostratamente cancerogene, ma i passi successivi sembrano aver spinto le restrizioni alla follia per un eccesso di zelo (che non hanno ad esempio per l'olio di palma che è un poteniale allergene ad esempio) verso la nostra salute. Ora siamo al capolinea, manca l'aria a chi vuole creare fragranze belle e distintive. Ne parlo spesso anche col mio amico profumiere Antonio Alessandria che di recente ha dovuto scontrarsi con questo scoglio per il lancio della sua linea Hommage à la lune. Osservare con rigore regole così soffocanti costringe a un appiattimento ormai inaccettabile, basta pensare all'offerta sul mercato oggi.

Fra pochi mesi il legislatore europeo potrebbe decretare definitivamente la morte della profumeria per come la conosciamo vietando l'uso di sostanze contenute anche in molti naturali: questo è l'allarme girato sul web in questi giorni dalla voce di Luc Gabriel (The Different Company), ma anche da profumieri indipendenti da sempre sensibili a questo problema come Anya McCoy e Michel Roudnitska. E' tempo che chi può faccia il possibile per cambiare il sistema affinché il profumo venga protetto per le sue peculiarità (come avviene per i formaggi ad esempio) più che trattato come un potenziale allergene cosmetico, altrimenti rischiamo di essere gli ultimi fortunati ad aver goduto della bellezza di un'epoca che non tornerà mai più.

In Voluptas Mors - S. Dalì/P. Halsman

I consider myself lucky for having had the chance to enjoy the beauty of masterpieces like Chypre, L'Heure Bleue, No. 5, Joy and all the flourishing of beauty, heritage and knowledge they started. Since ever, the basic ingredients of this legacy are raw materials, naturals and synthetics which has made possible to sculpt in the air perfect smelly shapes. There wouldn't have been chypres without oakmoss as well as there wouldn't have been florientals without eugenoles.
Decades ago perfumery's hands have been tied by the hands of IFRA and EU legislators that restricted more and more in fact and in law the perfumer's palette. Of course everybody is grateful for having forbidden materials that has been proved to be carcinogenic, but the next steps seem to have insanely pushed the restrictions for an excess of zeal (they don't have for the potentially allergenic palm oil for example) in defense of our health. Now we're at an end, this is frustrating for people aiming to create beautiful and different fragrances. I often talk about it also with my friend, the perfumer Antonio Alessandria who recently had to deal with this issue for the launch of his line Hommage à la lune. Sticking to such oppressive regulations and laws by now forces to an unacceptable flattering, just think of what's nowadays on the shelves.

Within few months the EU lawmakers could definitely decree the death of perfumery as we know it forbidding substances that can be found also in many naturals: this is the warning passed on the web coming from Luc Gabriel (The Different Company), but also spread by independent perfumers that's always been sensible to this topic like Anya McCoy and Michel Roudnitska. It's time to do all the possible for changing the paradigm so that a perfume must be protected for its own peculiarities (as it is for cheese for example) rather than being considered a potentially allergenic cosmetic, otherwise we're losing something. Otherwise we risk to be the last lucky guys able to enjoy the beauty of an era that won't come back ever.

Chypre di Coty (1917)

Chypre Royale, Chypre de Paris o semplicemente Chypre sono solo alcuni dei nomi che fluttuavano nell'aria ad inizio '900. Roger et Gallet, Guerlain ed altri prima di loro avevano giocato con le note di questo accordo che appare già nei formulari veneti del '500 e prima ancora un po' in tutto il mediterraneo. Mi son sempre chiesto cosa avesse di più questo François Coty per fare del suo Chypre il fondamento iconico di una intera famiglia olfattiva che avrebbe rivoluzionato la profumeria dei decenni successivi. La ricostruzione dell'Osmothèque mi ha dato un primo indizio ma solo indossandolo sono riuscito a capire il segreto del suo successo. Devo ringraziare per questo una cara amica che qualche mese fa mi ha lasciato di stucco regalandomi una bottiglia di eau de cologne degli anni '50.

Coty Chypre (1917)

Chypre Royale, Chypre de Paris or simply Chypre are only few of the names floating in the air at the beginning of the XX century. Roger et Gallet, Guerlain and others before them already played with the notes of this accord that was already spotted on the XVI century venitian pefume manuals and probably since ever in all the mediterranean area. I've always wondered what's the hype about François Coty and his Chypre to make it the iconic seed of an olfactory family which would have marked perfumery of the next decades. The reconstruction from the Osmothèque gave me some hints but only wearing it I could understand the secret of its success. I must thank for this a dear friend who left me breathless few months ago giving to me as a present an eau de cologne bottle from the '50s.

Mito extrait de parfum (Vero Kern 2013)

Nell'anteprima del mio Scent Diary per Pitti Fragranze vi avevo già parlato di Mito, l'ultima fragranza di Vero Kern presentata alla stampa esattamente un anno fa in un caldo pomeriggio. Parlando e gustando Mito, ricordo l'eleganza disinvolta di Vero in un completo bianco, occhiali da sole ed il dettaglio glamour di un foulard animalier. Il suo stile non segue le mode e si veste prima di tutto di personalità rendendo ogni indumento un raffinato accessorio. Ciò che colpisce però è la sua vivacità, quell'instancabile creatività capace di trarre ispirazione da una foto o dalla musica, da un libro o da uno dei suoi tanti viaggi. L'arte di Frau Vero nasce in estratto, e dopo aver lanciato un vero chypre verde floreale come non se ne sentivano da lustri, valeva la pena di attendere per scrivere una recensione. La bellezza richiede pazienza ed ora finalmente ho tra le mani un campione di Mito extrait de parfum. Spruzzo e godo.

Mito extrait de parfum (Vero Kern 2013)

Inside the preview of my Scent Diary for Pitti Fragranze I already told you about Mito, the latest fragrance from the swiss perfumer Vero Kern launched exactly one year ago during a press event in a hot afternoon. While speaking and sniffing Mito, I remember Vero's effortless elegance wearing a white suit, sunglasses and the glamour detail of a leopard print silk scarf. Her style doesn't follow fashion trends and first of all wears personality making every other garnment just a refined accessory. What strikes though it's her liveliness, that tireless creativity that's able to take inspiration from a picture or a piece of music, from a book or from one of her many journeys. Frau Vero's art starts with extraits, so after launching a true green-florar chypre like we haven't seen any in more than a decade, it was worth waiting to write a review. Beauty takes her time but finally I have in my hands a sample of Mito extrait de parfum. Let me spray and enjoy.
