Migliaia di anni fa, nell'antico Egitto queste parole aprivano il solstizio d'estate, l'inizio dell'anno. Sirio risplendeva all'aurora nel cielo egiziano segnando l'inizio del giorno più lungo e la rinascita di Iside, dea della fertilità che porta con se l'albero della vita. Pare che per gli antichi egizi l'albero della vita corrispondesse alla cassia (acacia farnesiana o gaggia), forse per quei fiori tondi, gialli e dal profumo raggiante come il sole protagonista di Une Fleur de Cassie di Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle.

"Here it is the star illuminating the evening: Isis rises and with her blessing may the flood and life come to the lands". Thousand years ago in the ancient Egypt these words introduced the summer solstice, the beginning of the year. Sirius shined at dawn in the aegyptian sky marking the start of the longest day and the rebirth of Isis, goddess of fertility bringing with her the tree of life. It seems that for ancient aegyptians the tree of life corresponded to cassie (acacia farnesiana or huisache), maybe due to its round, yellow flowers with a perfume as radiant as the sun playing a keyrole in Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle Une Fleur de Cassie.

Spesso scelgo la seconda fragranza con cui giocare per portare alle vostre narici qualcosa di insolito. Anche stavolta il profumiere è Sophia Grojsman ma siamo in casa Malle e si tratta di una fragranza d'ambiente.
Russian Nights, notti russe nasce come candela profumata ma riscuote subito successo e viene declinata in spray e incensi. La struttura semplice delle profumazioni d'ambiente sembra congeniale al Grojsman-style che qui gioca sul contrasto drammatico fra il gelo ieratico del cashmeran (grigio, musica d'organo, canto gregoriano, Re Magi, Il nome della rosa, Aspettando Godot) ed il calore quasi medicinale di un mix di cannella, chiodo di garofano e noce moscata (biscotti, sciarpa, erboristeria, marrone, rosso). Il fondo è morbido, suadente (pantera, volpe, jazz club) e diffusivo di muschi, legni ambrati e note irisate con la tenacia e la diffusività strepitose che contraddistinguono anche Paris e le sue altre creazioni.

I often choose the second fragrance to play with with the purpose of bringing to your nostrins something unusual. We are again in front of a creation by perfumer Sophia Grojsman but we're at Malle's house and this is a home fragrance.
Russian Nights, was created as a scented candle but given its success it was also made as a room spray and incense. The simple structure of home scents seems perfect for the Grojsman-style playing here with the dramatic contrast between the hieratic cold cashmeran (steel grey, organ music, gregorian chant, the Three Kings, The name of the rose, Waiting for Godot) and the almost medicinal warmth of a cinnamon, clove and nutmeg mix (bisquits, scarf, apothecary, brown, red). The base is soft, winning (panther, fox, jazz club) and diffusive and longlasting with musks, ambery woods and iris notes also featured in Paris and other creations.

Eau de Magnolia di Frédéric Malle (Carlos Benaïm 2014)

Da sempre l'estate è la mia stagione preferita non solo per la fine della scuola e l'idea delle vacanze, ma per l'esplosione di colori e profumi che aspetto con trepidazione il resto dell'anno. La stagione è impazzita quest'anno, eppure l'aroma dolce e rustico del fieno maturo e delle messi ha riempito la campagna padana alla fine. Il suo contrappunto civilizzato invece divampa nei giardini con l'impertinenza delle magnolie, un aroma paradossare di albicocche infuse di pompelmo e te verde macchiato latte che riesce a bucare anche l'afa catramata dell'agosto milanese.
La magnolia è un dinosauro botanico: si dice infatti che i primi fiori apparsi sulla terra fossero antenati delle magnolie con la stessa simmetria perfetta per cui qualsiasi asse si scelga, si hanno sempre due metà esatte. Questo ha suggerito a Frédéric Malle il nome della mia candela preferita della linea: Jurassic Flower, creata da Carlos Benaïm a partire dall'headspace della magnolia grandiflora.

Since ever summer is my favourite season not only because of the end of school year and the forecoming holidays but for the explosion of colours and smells I long for the rest of the year. We had quite a weird season this year and nevertheless the rough and sweet smell of mature hay and crops filled the padanian countriside at last. Its civilized counterpart instead are the insolent magnolias spreading throughout the gardens their strange aroma of grapefruit drenched apricots and milk dashed green tea so intense to pierce the tarry sultriness of August in Milan..
Magnolia is a botanical fossil: in fact it is said that the first flowers bloomed on earth were ancestors of magnolias featuring the same perfect simmetry that makes them split in two identical parts no matter along which axis you chose to dissect them. This provided Frédéric Malle with the name for my favourite candle in the line: Jurassic Flower, created by Carlos Benaïm from the headspace of magnolia grandiflora.

Candele: la mia wishlist natalizia

Dopo aver parlato di come scegliere una buona candela, in clima di regali profumati dell'ultimo minuto, ho pensato di fare un giro a caccia di candele. Queste son quelle che mi hanno stuzzicato, pensieri luminosi per dare luce e fragranza all'attesa del Natale. Naturalmente ci sono gli aromi della tradizione, le spezie calde e i canditi dei piatti delle feste, ma a sorpresa anche richiami all'albero di Natale e al presepe, con un po' di golosità per finire.

Le Labo Laurier 62: dalla cucina al laboratorio il passo è breve e il mazzetto aromatico diventa una candela dominata dagli aspetti verdi e quasi floreali di alloro ed eucalipto, per poi svelare un fondo ricco di balsami e spezie su un letto caldo di chiodo di garofano, ambra e sandalo. Packaging essenziale e moderno per un Natale techno-chic.

Candles: my Xmas wishlist

After writing about how to chose a fine candle, speaking about last-minute gifts I thought to make a trip around looking for some candles. Here are the ones that excited me, luminous presents to light and scent the Christmas holidays. Of course there are traditional smells, spices and candied fruits from the festive dishes, but surprisingly also references to Christmas tree and Christmas crib, with a little bit of titbits in the end.

Le Labo Laurier 62: from the kitchen to the laboratory it's just one step and a bunch of aromatic herbs becomes a candle ruled by green, almost floral facets of laurel and eucaliptus, revealing later a rich mix of balsams, spices over a warm bed of clove, sandalwood and abler. Essencial packaging for a techno-chic Christmas.
