Esxence 10 - Un'edizione tutta d'oro

Esxence-The Scent of Excellence la fiera annuale dedicata alla profumeria artistica che si terrà a Milano dal 5 all'8 aprile 2018 festeggerà dieci anni e questo segna anche il sesto anno che La Gardenia nell'Occhiello ne è un media partner ufficiale. Lo scorso mese ho partecipato alla conferenza stampa di presentazione che si è tenuta al Park Hyatt Hotel, l'incantevole hotel di lusso a cinque stelle giusto a lato delle belle volte art nouveau della Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, ed eccomi pronto a svelarvi tutte le novità di questa edizione tutta d'oro.

Esxence 10 - the golden edition

Esxence-The Scent of Excellence the annual exhibition devoted to artistic perfumery held in Milan, Italy on 5-8 April 2018 will celebrate ten years and this will also mark La Gardenia nell'Occhiello's 6th year as an official media partner. Last month I attended the Esxence-The Scent of Excellence 2018 press conference, which was held at the Park Hyatt Hotel, the glamourous Luxury 5 star hotels right on the side of the beautiful art nouveau arcades of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, so I'm going to tell you more about what are the news for this year's golden edition.

Jacques Fath
Iconico stilista delle dive degli anni '40 e '50, Jacques Fath amava le belle donne e proprio le belle donne hanno salvato la Maison Jacques Fath. Il più bel regalo per un amante della bella profumeria classica ad Esxence infatti lo ha portato Cécile Zarokian sotto la direzione artistica di Rania Naim di Panouge riportando i profumi Jacques Fath allo splendore con i Fath's Essentials. Gemma della linea è Green Water, la prima colonia aromatica della storia creata da Vincent Roubert nel 1946. Magistrale la riedizione di Cécile che brilla di menta e di un'overdose di neroli, preziosa come uno smeraldo.

Jacques Fath
Iconic fashion designer who dressed Divas through the '40s and '50s, Jacques Fath loved beautiful women. So, it's not by chance beautiful women saved the Maison Jacques Fath. In fact the most beautiful present for a perfume lover was brought at Esxence by Cécile Zarokian and Panouge's artistic director Rania Naim who brought Jacques Fath back to the glory with Fath's Essentials. Gem of the line is Green Water, the first aromatic cologne in perfume history created by Master Perfumer Vincent Roubert in 1946. Cécile's rendition is masterful, shining with mint and a neroli overdose as precious as an emerald.

During the European Heritage Days 2014, the Osmothèque Versailles opens its doors and its perfume collection. On September 20th from 10.00 to 17.30 it will be possible to visit it for free, meeting the extraordinary passionate perfumers that keep it alive and attend to a serie of lectures that will make you experience an onfactory journey through times discovering this invisible yet absolutely unique heritage made of olfactory treasures mosty disappeared.

Candele: la mia wishlist natalizia

Dopo aver parlato di come scegliere una buona candela, in clima di regali profumati dell'ultimo minuto, ho pensato di fare un giro a caccia di candele. Queste son quelle che mi hanno stuzzicato, pensieri luminosi per dare luce e fragranza all'attesa del Natale. Naturalmente ci sono gli aromi della tradizione, le spezie calde e i canditi dei piatti delle feste, ma a sorpresa anche richiami all'albero di Natale e al presepe, con un po' di golosità per finire.

Le Labo Laurier 62: dalla cucina al laboratorio il passo è breve e il mazzetto aromatico diventa una candela dominata dagli aspetti verdi e quasi floreali di alloro ed eucalipto, per poi svelare un fondo ricco di balsami e spezie su un letto caldo di chiodo di garofano, ambra e sandalo. Packaging essenziale e moderno per un Natale techno-chic.

Candles: my Xmas wishlist

After writing about how to chose a fine candle, speaking about last-minute gifts I thought to make a trip around looking for some candles. Here are the ones that excited me, luminous presents to light and scent the Christmas holidays. Of course there are traditional smells, spices and candied fruits from the festive dishes, but surprisingly also references to Christmas tree and Christmas crib, with a little bit of titbits in the end.

Le Labo Laurier 62: from the kitchen to the laboratory it's just one step and a bunch of aromatic herbs becomes a candle ruled by green, almost floral facets of laurel and eucaliptus, revealing later a rich mix of balsams, spices over a warm bed of clove, sandalwood and abler. Essencial packaging for a techno-chic Christmas.

Ambra grigia, oro galleggiante (2/2)

Dopo oltre un mese da Esxence, risentendo la mouillette intrisa di ambra grigia si capisce facilmente il suo uso come fissativo: l'aroma è ancora li, ormai delicato e poudré ma tenace e diffusivo. Se durante la conferenza dell'Osmothèque si percepiva soprattutto l'aspetto animale di stalla, cavalli, letame e fieno tipico dell'ambrinol, a poco a poco l'ambra grigia si ammorbidisce aprendo il suo bouquet unico fatto di oltre cento costituenti, di cui alcuni in tracce omeopatiche. Dato il costo elevato della materia prima naturale, fin dagli anni '30 Firmenich avviò ricerche per possibili sostituti di sintesi. Solamente negli anni '50 però apparve il Fixateur 404 che era composto in parte da ambrox e ambrinol.  Come l'ambrox, anche l'ambroxan è derivato dallo sclareol presente nella salvia sclarea ma cattura soprattutto l'aspetto boschivo, terroso, balsamico e quasi incensato della materia naturale perdendo completamente le sfaccettature pastose ed animali, marine e irisate. Nulla è in grado di sostituire davvero una materia così mistica e carnale il cui odore unisce le fumigazioni della messa alta in una cattedrale al calore palpitante del corpo nudo e ai sentori di alghe, iris e violetta rubati al vento, alla terra e al mare.

Ambergris, floating gold (2/2)

After more than a month after Esxence, smelling the blotter drenched in ambergris tincture it's easy to understand its use as a fixative: the aroma is still there, now delicate and powdery yet tenacious and diffusive. While during the lecture of the Osmothèque the main detectable aspect was about animals, stable, horses, manure and hay typical of ambrinol, ambergris slowly softens revealing its unique bouquet with more than 100 components, some of which in faint traces. Given the cost of the natural raw material, since the '30s Firmenich started searching for possible sinthetic replacers. Nevertheless it was only during the '50s that appeared Fixateur 404, a compound partially made of ambrox and ambrinol. Like ambrox, also ambroxan is derived from the sclareol present is clary sage, but it mainly captures the woody, earthy, balsamic and almost incensey aspect of the natural material without the animalic, marine and iris-like mellowness. Nothing can really replace such a mystical yet carnal raw material which smell joins the fumes of high mass in a cathedral to the warmth of a throbbing naked body and an olfactory crossbreed of algae, iris and violets speaking of wind, earth and sea.

Io e Neela Vermeire al suo stand

In un settore dove fino all'anno scorso si aveva la percezione di stare in una sorta di isola felice, la recessione economica ha incominciato a sentirsi. Fortunatamente la crisi non porta solo connotazioni negative, anzi in qualche caso serve da stimolo per chi ha un'animo creativo e delle emozioni da raccontare. E' il caso di Neela Vermeire che sono felice di avere finalmente incontrato. Vi avevo già parlato di Trayee, Mohur e Bombay Bling e parlando con lei ho finalmente avuto la riprova di quanto le fragranze siano veramente parte del suo mondo interiore. Ammiro la maestria della mano di Bertrand Duchaufour ma qui veramente ciò che respiri è l'India di Neela e sono sicuro non le è mancato l'apprezzamento degli appassionati come me.

In a business where till the last year there was the perception of being in a kind of happy island, today there are the first evidences of the economic slump. Fortunately the crisis doesn't bring only negative aspects but in some case it can turn into a stimulus for who has a creative mind and emotions to tell. This is the case of Neela Vermeire that I finally had the pleasure to meet. I already told you about Trayee, Mohur and Bombay Bling and talking to her I had the double check of how the fragrances are really part of her interior world. I admire the masterful hand of Bertrand Duchaufour but here what you breath is Neela's India and I'm sure she got compliments from the perfume lovers like me.
