I Maestri del profumo: Germaine Cellier (1909-1976) (2)

Se vi è piaciuta la prima parte di questo ritratto di Germaine Cellier, di certo gli inizi della sua carriera di profumiere vi appassioneranno, specialmente gli anni in Roure Bertrand Dupont, che non sempre sono stati facili. Dopo una brevissima esperienza nella profumeria funzionale presso Colgate-Palmolive, nel 1943 Germaine Cellier torna in Roure.
Fino a tutti gli anni '20 la profumeria era dettata da nomi come Houbigant, Guerlain, Coty e Caron. Solo da pochi lustri le griffe di moda si erano avventurate nel reame olfattivo e sarti come Poiret, Patou, Lanvin e Chanel si erano direttamente rivolti a profumieri in un rapporto privilegiato e quasi esclusivo. Così Roure e gli altri produttori, si erano essenzialmente limitati a fornire questi ultimi con materie prime naturali e di sintesi, basi e specialità innovative per l'epoca. Ma il vento stava cambiando.

If you enjoyed the first part of this portrait of Germaine Cellier, surely her first years as a perfumer will thrill you, specially the years spent in Roure Bertrand Dupont, that ain't always easy. After a brief period in functional perfumery at Colgate-Palmolive, in 1943 Germaine Cellier gets back to Roure.
Till the end of the 1920s perfumery was ruled by names like Houbigant, Guerlain, Coty and Caron. It was only since a decade that fashion houses ventured in the olfactory realm and designers like Poiret, Patou, Lanvin and Chanel directly collaborated with perfumers in a special, almost exclusive relationship. So Roure and other producers, essentially confined themselves to provide them with natural and synthetic raw materials, innovative bases and specialties for the time. But the wind was changing.

Quando penso alle dive del cinema in bianco e nero, mi vengono sempre in mente personalità gigantesche. Soprattutto, rispetto a molti personaggi di oggi, mi vengono in mente Signore capaci di esprimere un ventaglio così ampio di emozioni che spazia in un tutt'uno dalle commedie brillanti al noir. Ecco esattamente quello che provo per Rumeur di Lanvin.
In questa composizione compatta che esplora le allegre risate di Arpège così come le ruvidezza sfrenata e languida del mio adorato Scandal ho subito rivisto Margo Channing, una vera star, la più intransigente, sgargiante, fumosa ed incantevole Diva mai impersonata prima da una strepitosa Bette Davis in Eva contro Eva.

When I think of Divas from the silver screen, I keep thinking of personalities that look larger than life. Above all, compared to many nowadays characters I keep thinking of Ladies able to express such a wide range of emotions going from sparkling comedies to noir all at once. That's exactly what I feel about Rumeur de Lanvin.
This full bodied composition exploring the cheerful laughs of Arpège as well as the languid unblamed roughness of my beloved Scandal instantly pictured in my mind Margo Channing, a true strar, the most uncompromising, flamboyant, smoky and glamourous Diva ever embodied before by a masterful Bette Davis in All about Eve.

Esxence 2015: accordiamo i nasi!

Musica e profumi, sinestetiche vibrazioni dell'anima che hanno catturato l'interesse di molti dall'antichità, passando per Piesse e Turin. L'incontro più celebre di accordi olfattivi e musicali però è Arpège, anche se Jeanne Lanvin giocherà più volte con citazioni musicali come Crescendo e Ou Fleurit l'Oranger (ispirato all'opera Mignon di A.Thomas) alternandole a tentazioni sublimi come My Sin (il mio peccato) e Scandal (scandalo).
Sette note e sette famiglie olfattive per la settima edizione di Esxence che mette in scena un'orchestra di tentazioni profumate fra cui sentiremo le novità che ci accompagneranno durante il 2015. Tanti sono gli eventi in programma a partire dalla conferenza dell'Institute of Art and Olfaction che ci parlerà dei criteri con cui vengono premiate le fragranze. A seguire il focus in cui vi accompagnerò attraverso l'Età Moderna della Profumeria Italiana. Naturalmente sarà presente l'Osmothèque di Versailles con una conferenza dedicata all'arancio amaro e col suo stand dove poter sentire tanti capolavori della profumeria del passato. Da non perdere poi venerdì 27 il laboratorio musico-olfattivo di Laurent Assoulen, pianista e compositore jazz e creatore di fragranze e molto altro. Esxence 2015: let's tune the noses!

Music and perfumes, synaesthetic vibrations for the soul that aroused the interest of many since the ancient times, passing by Piesse and Turin. The most famous connection between olfactory and musical accords though is Arpège, even if Jeanne Lanvin will play more than once with musical references like Crescendo and Ou Fleurit l'Oranger (inspired by the A.Thomas opera Mignon) in rotation with sublime temptations like My Sin and Scandal.
Seven notes and seven olfactory families for the seventh edition of Esxence putting on stage an orchestra of smelly temptations among which we'll find the new launches of 2015. There are many scheduled events starting with the Institute of Art and Olfaction conference about the criteria used in fragrance awards. Right after I'll lead you through a focus on the Modern Age of Italian Perfumery. Of course the Osmothèque Versailles booth will be there giving you the chance to smell long lost masterpieces. They will also hold a lecture dedicated to bitter orange. On Friday 27 don't miss also the musical-olfactory lab with the pianist, composer and fragrance creator Laurent Assoulen and much more. Le Galion Sortilège (2014)

Dal 1935 Paul Vacher ha firmato le fragranze Le Galion per quarant'anni, lasciando un grande patrimonio di bellezza e creatività. Partendo dalle formule originali sono state ricostruite nove eau de parfum per battezzarne la rinascita. Fra i tanti successi del passato come Bourrasque, Brumes ed altri, quali fragranze scegliere? Nessun dubbio sulla prima, Sortilège, la più emblematica e complessa della Maison che mi è particolarmente piaciuta oltre ad altri due jus.

Quello che colpisce subito di Sortilège è il nome facile da ricordare anche grazie ad inconfondibili assonanze. Nella mia testa lo associo inevitabilmente a una vecchia pubblicità con disegnata una sirena, Lorelei forse o Rusalka che canta alla luna il suo sortilegio accompagnato dagli arpeggi di una lira. Sortilège apre con la vivacità saponosa delle aldeidi fra agrume, rosa e lillà che dipingono la tipica eleganza signorile dei fioriti aldeidati di vecchia scuola tutti guantini e maniche a tre quarti. Presto arriva il gelsomino languido con la polposità della pesca che veste di velluto la fragranza e svela ogni mistero. Non ho mai sentito la formula originale ma è come se un decennio dopo Vacher avesse voluto riscrivere Arpège in chiave più moderna e luminosa, aggiungendo una femminilità gioiosa che Marie Duchêne (Patchouli Nobile, Laboratorio Olfattivo Alkemi) riesce ad esaltare nelle sfumature fragola senza cedere un millimetro di classe. Il sottofondo è una sinfonia floreale, soprattutto rosa, fior d'arancio, ylang ylang e narciso che poggia su un letto di sandalo, vetiver e iris velati da un accordo chypre con vero muschio di quercia certamente oggi meno denso ed animale ma comunque pastoso, avvolgente e duraturo.

Le Galion Sortilège (2014)

Since1935 Paul Vacher signed Le Galion fragrances leaving over forty years a great aesthetic and creative heritage. Starting from the original formulations nine eau de parfum have been reconstructed to inaugurate its rebirth. Among many successes from the past like Bourrasque, Brumes and others, what to chose? No doubt on the first, Sortilège, the most emblematic and complex of the house that I liked most of all together with other two juices.

What immediately strikes about Sortilège is the name that's easy to remember also thanks to unmistakable assonances. I can't help it but it remembers me of an old advertising showing a mermaid, Lorelei maybe or Rusalka singing at the moon her spell accompanied by the arpeggios of a lyre. Sortilège opens with the soapy sparkle of aldehydes across citrus, rose and lilac rendering the typical ladylike elegance of  old school aldehydic florals all about gloves and three-quarter length sleeves. Soon the languid jasmin joins together with a pulpy peach covering the fragrance in velvet and making everything clear. I never happened to smell the original formula but it seems like a decade later Vacher wanted to remake a more modern and luminous Arpège, adding a joyful feminine key Marie Duchêne (Patchouli Nobile, Laboratorio Olfattivo Alkemi) succeeds to enhance with a strawberry facet that doesn't yield a bit of class. The base is a floral symphony, above all rose, orange blossom, ylang-ylang and narcissus laying on a sandalwood, vetiver and iris bed veiled by a chypre accord with real oakmoss surely nowadays lighter and less animalic yet still mellow, enveloping and longlasting.

I Maestri del Profumo: Edmond Roudnitska (2) Eau d'Hermès (1951)

Come ho messo in risalto nella prima parte di questa monografia, Edmond Roudnitska in 70 anni ci ha lasciato 17 gioielli con cui ha segnato l'estetica olfattiva contemporanea. Quello che secondo me rappresenta la gemma più preziosa, il capolavoro assoluto che riassume tutta la sua arte è l'Eau d'Hermès. Il 1951 in casa Hermès è un anno rivoluzionario: con la morte di Emile-Maurice Hermès si chiude l'era degli Hermès Frères in cui la griffe da selleria si era trasformata in produttore di pelletteria e accessori di lusso perfino per lo Zar. Per la prima volta in oltre cento anni, l'azienda usciva dalla linea di sangue sotto la direzione del genero di Emile, Robert Dumas. Egli volle subito rimarcare la continuità con l'eredità del passato battezzando il passaggio del testimone con un profumo dedicato a Emile stesso che fosse l'essenza dell'eleganza Hermès. Edmond Roudnitska che aveva trovato in Robert un amico oltre che un committente, recepì questo spirito creando un profumo che emanasse classe e tradizione, ma reinventata attraverso la sua visione astratta della creazione olfattiva.

The Masters of Perfume: Edmond Roudnitska (2) Eau d'Hermès (1951)

As I pointed out in the first part of this monography, Edmond Roudnitska in 70 years left us 17 jewels that allowed him to mark the contemporary olfactory aesthetics. What I cherish as the most precious gem, the absolute masterpiece summarizing all his art is Eau d'Hermès. 1951 for the Hermès house is a revolutionary year: the death of Emile-Maurice Hermès puts an end to the Hermès Frères era during which the brand from saddlery becomes producer of luxury leather goods and accessories even for the Tzar. For the first time in more than a hundred years the company passed out of the blood line under the direction of Emile's son in law Robert Dumas. He immediately wanted to highlight the link with heritage baptizing the passage of the baton with a perfume dedicated to Emile aimed to be the essence of the Hermès elegance. Edmond Roudnitska who found in Robert both a customer and a friend, aknowledged this spirit concocting a perfume exuding class and tradition,  renewed though through his abstract vision of olfactory creation.
