Rose Poivrée di The Different Company (J. C. Ellena, 2000)

The Different Company Rose Poivrée (J. C. Ellena, 2000)

This review appeared in the CaFleureBon Modern Masterpieces last February and I'm happy share it also here.
In 2000, when Jean-Claude Ellena started his path as an independent perfumer, founding The Different Company with his long time Grassois colleague Thierry de Baschmakoff, he took the most important step in his aesthetic path. They had worked together previously in 1992, when de Baschmakoff designed for the Italian Jewel Designer Bulgari the frosted green bottle housing Jean-Claude Ellena’s astringently elegant Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert. Since the collaboration worked beautifully (setting the green tea trend that was prevalent in the 90s), it’s no wonder they decided to collaborate on a new perfume company.
The Different Company was unlike anything of its time as they sought to explore a new approach to perfumery. Right after the launch, I recall reading in an interview with M.  Ellena “that everybody in the 1990s wanted to smell clean, harmless or sweet as a cookie”. Whilst the idea of associating smell with taste was fashionable, Jean-Claude Ellena took a different approach with using salt and pepper which became the backbone of Rose Poivrée, the mother of all peppery, salty roses of the XXI century.

I Maestri del Profumo: Germaine Cellier (1909-1976) (3)

Bandit - Bouldoires (1948)

The Masters of Perfume: Germaine Cellier (1909-1976) (3)

Bandit ad by Bouldoires (1948)
The genius of Germaine Cellier can only be measured within the frame of her larger-than-life, remarkable creations.
The crucial event was meeting Robert Piguet, an ex-modelist trained at Paul Poiret's atelier who after WWII enstablished his own fashion house. His style is lively, full of drive and desire for reward after the dark years of the war.

In 1944 he debuted with a mythical collection inspired by buccaneers and their adventures by faraway seas that was paired by the launch of Bandit, a leathery chypre bearing a brutal sensuality. To evoke the dangerous smell of leather and forays Germaine dares to use 1% of iso-butyl-quinoleine, a molecule doused till then with fear for its violence.

Annick Goutal Sables (1985)

Annick Goutal Sables in 1985
In 2015 I started contributing to the Cafleurebon Modern Masterpieces Serie from one of my summer must, Annick Goutal's Sables which I am happy to share here too.
July is holiday time and in South Europe the coasts are a blast of Mediterranean smells floating in the heat, highlighted by the salty sparkle of sea breeze. There’s a wide range of bushes well representing this image in the perfumer’s palette and a good part of them is also present in many dishes, but definitely immortelle succeeds in conveying the mighty sun at its zenith.
Launched exactly thirtytwo years ago in 1985, Annick Goutal Sables masterfully renders this warm embrace by fearlessly building a unique, revolutionary architecture around immortelle absolute, a raw material Annick certainly met during her training years in Grasse and which she definitely felt in love with.

DZING! de L'Artisan Parfumeur (1999)

Alexander McQueen AW 2001

L'Artisan Parfumeur DZING! (1999)

Alexander McQueen AW 2001
This review is one of my latest contributions to CaFleureBon Modern Masterpieces serie under Michelyn Camen's art direction, so in case you missed it I hope you'll enjoy it.A treasured memory of my childhood is going to the Circus. I remember being both awed and overwelmed by a mixture of feelings, childish anticipation, tears or laughs caused by the poker face of clowns, the breathless suspense of rolling drums while elephants step over a beautiful girl on the ground and my mouth opened in a capital “Oh” looking the acrobats swinging like birds on a trapeze.
Imagine asking a 30 years old perfumer to capture all these feelings as an olfactory briefing in the late ‘90s at the height of the minimal aesthetics. Doesn’t it sound like the recipe for a flop? Fortunately, as Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam would say, the best ideas come not from reason, but from a clear, visionary madness.

Fragranze 12: Scent Diary #2

Grossmith London

Fragranze 12: Scent Diary #2

Grossmith London
Chandeliers, beautiful florals, prepared tea rooms and the subtlest incens ever give in Sylvan Song a perfect rendering of the London tea temple experience. Simon and Amanda Brooke celebrate the fifth anniversary of the rebirth of Grossmith creating an exclusive fragrance for Fortnum&Mason. Revealing a sumptuous floral bouquet cheered up by citrus and the most ethereal and zesty facets of incense, the fragrance is all about the Grossmith style and really speaks of the charm of one of my cult places in London. "I'm really glad you say that. Sylvan Song is very special to us because it's our first exclusive fragrance and it will stay exclusive also in the future" tells me Amanda. Suited for who's looking for tradition, quality and the top english elegance.

Le Galion Special for Gentlemen e Eau Noble (2014)

Le Galion Special for Gentlemen and Eau Noble (2014)

Special for Gentlemen was the first masculine fragrance the Le Galion introduced right after the WWII but it would be difficult to tell from which era it comes if it wouldn't be for the unmistakable galbanum chromings so in fashion in 1947. Its timeless elegance could come from the belle epoque as well as from the '60s and it's shaped on the olfactory backbone of ambery-animalic lavenders sprung from my beloved Jicky. One spray is enough to realize that Special for Gentlemen is like the clean-shaven Cary Grant of To catch a thief: maybe he's not so young but who cares when you're so stilish you can climb roofs with not a hair out of place and you can seduce young heiresses with sneaky ways?

In 1997 Jean-Louis Dumas wanted to relaunch the Hermès house on the catwalks by chosing Martin Margiela as creative director. Martin Margiela's sharp and tactile elegance focusing more on cuts and fabrics rather than on decorations now needed an olfactory equivalent. In 1999 they decided to collaborate with a young perfumer which name was already known for creations for Dyptique, Guerlain and L'Artisan Parfumeur. Which material better than iris (another olimpic divinity) could conjure up a refined (veil, ermine) intellectual woman who's far from excesses and display (tennis court, to the lighthouse)? So Hiris is born, one of Olivia Giacobetti's most beautiful and misunderstood creations, a fruity-aromatic iris, a muted floral (silent white peacock, white sculpture in a garden, Silence) melting with the smell of a vicuña dress just out of the dry cleaner's (linen shirt, tennis outfit).
Bravo, all of you got its clean opaque surface revealing a misty hortus conclusus with iris, vegetables and violets.

Chanel Nº 19 (1971): 130 volte Coco

Joyeux anniversaire Madamoiselle!

Chanel Nº 19 (1971): 130 times Coco

"One cannot be forever innovating. I want to create classics" Coco Chanel

Coco fotografata da Willy Rizzo
If elegance had a smell, that would certainly be the scent of iris. It's simple because it comes from earth, it's precious because it takes a long process to extract it from iris pallida root and it conveys the grace of Canova's marbles and the tenuousness of georgette. Two fragrances led it shine most of all: Fath's Iris Gris (Vincent Roubert) and Chanel Nº 19. Thanks to a crazy amount of iris butter melt with a little more than a whiff of peach, the first romantically renders the rosy cheeks of a girl. Lean and classy in her immaculate muslin shirt, Nº 19 instead is a proud beauty sculpted by Henri Robert according to Coco's rule saying it is always better to be slightly underdressed to be elegant. That's exactly how it makes me feel, effortlessly chic, simply flawless.
More than 40 years have passed since that May 5th 1921 and Coco was determinated to launch a new great classic to celebrate the recovery of the fashion house. Headstrong like a perfect Leo, she worked on it going through difficulties and many trials and ended it only in 1970, few months before dying. Nº 19 is named after her birthday and today she would have been 130 years old therefore I'm going to wear it for a toast. Joyeux anniversaire Madamoiselle!

I Maestri del Profumo: Edmond Roudnitska (2)

The Masters of Perfume: Edmond Roudnitska (2)
Eau d'Hermès (1951)

"A beautiful perfume is the one which gives us a shock: a sensory one followed by a psychological one" Edmond Roudnitska

As I pointed out in the first part of this monography, Edmond Roudnitska in 70 years left us 17 jewels that allowed him to mark the contemporary olfactory aesthetics. What I cherish as the most precious gem, the absolute masterpiece summarizing all his art is Eau d'Hermès. 1951 for the Hermès house is a revolutionary year: the death of Emile-Maurice Hermès puts an end to the Hermès Frères era during which the brand from saddlery becomes producer of luxury leather goods and accessories even for the Tzar. For the first time in more than a hundred years the company passed out of the blood line under the direction of Emile's son in law Robert Dumas. He immediately wanted to highlight the link with heritage baptizing the passage of the baton with a perfume dedicated to Emile aimed to be the essence of the Hermès elegance. Edmond Roudnitska who found in Robert both a customer and a friend, aknowledged this spirit concocting a perfume exuding class and tradition,  renewed though through his abstract vision of olfactory creation.

Highlights da Esxence 2012 (2): l'Osmothèque racconta l'iris

Emmanuelle e Cristiano allo stand dell'Osmotheque

Highlights from Esxence 2012 (2): the Osmothèque about iris

The greatest reason that makes me eager for Esxence to come every year, no matter how many brands and how many interesting new launches there will be, it's just the presence of the Osmothèque. Founded in the nineties by Jean Kerléo, it is born to preserve the great cultural heritage of perfumery. In Versailles where it has its offices and where are preserved both original flacons of some fragrances from the past still in good conditions and formulas of many others that can thus be faithfully reconstructed. In some case original fragrances may slight faults but as fairly remarks my friend Cristiano Canali, brilliant graduated at ISIPCA that collaborates with the Osmothèque, "also in museums you can see inestimable artworks with slight faults and nevertheless this doesn't make them less beautyful".
Anyway this is far more of a museum where you can smell liquid glories from the past, it is a precious spring of olfactory culture organizing all year round thematic encounters open to everybody. The Osmothèque survives thanks to donations, both of money and vintage bottles and every perfume lover should be proud to give his contribution. So I took the chance to renew my membership at SAO, the Osmothèque friends society.
