Nel 2015 ÇaFleureBon ha pubblicato nella rubrica Modern Masterpieces (Capolavori Moderni) un mio articolo su Sables di Annick Goutal, un must dell'estate che ho il piacere di condividere qui in italiano.
Luglio è tempo di vacanze nel sud dell'Europa e le coste sono un'esplosione di aromi mediterranei che riempie la calura, esaltati dalla salsedine della frizzante brezza marina. C'è una grande varietà di arbusti molto rappresentativi di questa imagine nella tavolozza del profumiere e buona parte la ritroviamo anche nei piatti della cucina, ma più di tutti l'elicriso riesce a rendere la potenza del sole allo zenith.
Immessa sul mercato esattamente trentadue anni fa nel 1985, Sables di Annick Goutal dipinge magistralmente questo caldo abbraccio grazie a una solida architettura, unica e rivoluzionaria che usa l'assoluta di elicriso, una materia prima che certamente Annick aveva incontrato durante la sua formazione a Grasse e di cui si era totalmente innamorata.

In 2015 I started contributing to the Cafleurebon Modern Masterpieces Serie from one of my summer must, Annick Goutal's Sables which I am happy to share here too.
July is holiday time and in South Europe the coasts are a blast of Mediterranean smells floating in the heat, highlighted by the salty sparkle of sea breeze. There’s a wide range of bushes well representing this image in the perfumer’s palette and a good part of them is also present in many dishes, but definitely immortelle succeeds in conveying the mighty sun at its zenith.
 Launched exactly thirtytwo years ago in 1985, Annick Goutal Sables masterfully renders this warm embrace by fearlessly building a unique, revolutionary architecture around immortelle absolute, a raw material Annick certainly met during her training years in Grasse and which she definitely felt in love with.

Capire la storia del profumo significa soprattutto conoscere i profumieri dietro ai grandi classici. Come per i pittori, entrare nei loro capolavori spesso richiede di approfondire da dove vengono, la loro formazione e i riferimenti estetici della loro tavolozza. Per esempio, Aimé Guerlain era affascinato dalla verbena e Jean-Claude Ellena è uomo da gelsomino.

“La tradizione è importante perché tutto ciò che siamo oggi è conseguenza di ieri… La modernità c'è perché io vivo oggigiorno, ho uno smartphone e uso la tecnologia, così cerco di fare cose che possono essere indossate al nostro tempo, ogni giorno” mi disse circa cinque anni fa Francis Kurkdjian parlando del ruolo che hanno tradizione e innovazione nel suo processo creativo. Dopo aver sentito per la prima volta Absolue pour le soir tutto ciò che aveva detto mi è apparso chiaramente. Sin da giovanissimo, M Kurkdjian è stato uno dei profumieri più influenti del XXI secolo, creando mega hits per molti designer, sia nella nicchia che nel mercato di massa. Ha saputo trasportare magistralmente lavanda e fior d'arancio, usati per secoli in colonie e fougère, ai nostri giorni. In fondo, lui è decisamente uomo da rosa e Absolue pour le soir rappresenta la summa della sua estetica.

To understand fragrance history, means above all, learning about the perfumers behind the classics. Similar to painters, understanding their masterpieces often requires closer look into their provenence, their training and the aesthetic references in their palette. For example, Aimé Guerlain was fascinated by verbena, and Jean-Claude Ellena is a man of jasmine.

“Tradition is important because everything we are today it’s because of yesterday… Modernity is because I live nowadays, I have a smartphone, I use technology so I try to do things that can be worn in our time, everyday” Francis Kurkdjian told me almost five years ago when speaking about tradition and innovation in his creative process. When I first smelled Absolue pour le soir right after, everything he said became crystal clear. Beginning at a young age, M Kurkdjian has been one of the most influential perfumers of the XXI century, creating mega hits for many designer, niche and department store fragrance. How masterfully he has brought lavender and orange blossom, used for centuries in colognes and fougeres up-to-date. Delving deeper, he is definitely a man of rose and Absolue pour le soir represents the summa of his aesthetics.

Modern Masterpieces: Ça Fleure Bon La Gardenia!

In questi mesi fra un viaggio in Brasile, le vacanze ed altri impegni lavorativi, sicuramente vi sarete accorti che sto pubblicando pochissime cose. Fra le nuove collaborazioni iniziate ho avuto il piacere di essere stato invitato a scrivere per ÇaFleureBon (letteralmente "fa buon profumo"in francese), un popolare webzine americano che ha ottenuto negli anni molto seguito ed importanti riconoscimenti come il Fragrance Foundation Editorial Excellence in Fragrance Coverage Award 2015. Tutti i mesi potrete leggere un mio articolo sui Modern Masterpieces, ovvero le fragranze più influenti e rivoluzionari degli ultimi decenni. During the last months I've had a wonderful trip to Brazil, then some days of vacation and back busy to work with new projects ongoing so I had few time left for publishing as you surely realized by my silence here. Pour un Homme di Caron (1934 - 2014)

Pensando alla firma olfattiva di Caron, è inevitabile parlare di qualcosa di imperativo, tenace e pieno di contrasti. Ripercorrendo le creazioni di un maestro dalle potenti dissonanze come Ernest Daltroff è piuttosto sorprendente l'incontro con l'equilibrio sottile e la pulizia japoniste di Pour un Homme.
Certo restano gli spigoli, quelli scabri della lavanda provenzale. Certo resta la densità calda della vaniglia. Ad ottant'anni dal suo lancio però, proprio la pulizia formale ne fa una fra le creazioni più avveneristiche e senza tempo del marchio, così avantgarde da rispecchiare perfettamente le parole di Francis Kurkdjian sulla sua visione di profumeria contemporanea.

Caron Pour un Homme (1934-2014)

Thinking of the olfactory signature of Caron, you can't help but speaking of something imposing, longlasting and full of contrasts. So looking back to the work of a powerful dissonances master like Ernest Daltroff it is quite a surprise the subtle balance and japoniste neatness of Pour un Homme.
Of course edges are there, the rough ones of lavender from Provence. Of course there's the dense warmth of vanilla. After eighty years since its launch though, the formal cleanliness makes of it one of the timeless and avantgarde creations of the brand. So avantgarde it still perfectly fits Francis Kurkdjian words about his vision of contemporary perfumery.
