Fra I legni il patchouli è certo il più esuberante, e questo carattere ruggente si odia o si ama proprio come accade con i grandi uomini. Fra le nuove proposte sentite a Firenze durante Pitti Fragranze (finalmente disponibile), quella che ha fatto irrimediabilmente perdere la testa agli amanti del patchouli come me è Gattopardo, l’ultima creazione di Antonio Alessandria che ci porta nuovamente nella sua amata Sicilia, stavolta a passo di danza.

Il ritmo è quello del celebre valzer brillante di Verdi che Nino Rota volle per la pellicola di Luchino Visconti. L’incedere ed il ruggito sono quelli del leonino Principe di Salina che regge al suo braccio la bella Angelica, luminosa come le zagare fra i suoi capelli. Vedendo volteggiare Claudia Cardinale e Burt Lancaster chi non si è innamorato perdutamente di Palermo? Chi non ha sognato per un attimo di tornare al 1860 fra gli ospiti al gran ballo nei fastosi saloni di Palazzo Valguarnera-Gangi, vestigia di un glorioso passato?

Among woods, definitely patchouli is the most exuberant, and this roaring temper is love or hate just like it happens with great men. Among the new proposals seen in Florence at Pitti Fragranze (finally available), the one that drove patchouli fans fall like me hopelessly mad about it is Gattopardo, Antonio Alessandria‘s latest creation that brings us one more time dancing our way to his beloved Sicily.

The rhythm is given by the famous Verdi’s brilliant waltz Nino Rota wanted for Luchino Visconti’s movie. The poise and the lion’s roar are the ones of the Prince of Salina giving his arm to the beautiful Angelica, luminous like the orange blossoms running through her hair. Looking at Claudia Cardinale and Burt Lancaster twirling around, who’s not fallen helplessly in love with Palermo? Who’s not dreamt for a while to turn back time to 1860 as a guest of the great ball in the opulent halls of Valguarnera-Gangi Palace, vestige of a glorious past?

Technique Indiscrète
Il ritorno alla ribalta del garofano in questi ultimi anni ha sicuramente alimentato la tendenza attuale per i floreali speziati. Technique Indiscrète finalmente è di nuovo a Firenze dopo tre anni di assenza con l'adorabile Fleur de Papier. Il profumiere di Anversa Libertin Louison immagina l'odore di una stampa floreale su un gigantesco cartellone pubblicitario, un'enorme, surreale garofano che porta con se un po' l'odore di colla e carta bagnata che lo rendono patinato ed eccentrico.

Technique Indiscrète
The revamping of carnation over the last few years has surely fostered the current spicy floral trend. Technique Indiscrète was finally back to Florence after three years absence with the lovely Fleur de Papier. Antwerp based perfumer Libertin Louison imagines the smell of a flower print on a giant advertising, a surrealist huge carnation carrying a bit of the wet paper and glue smell that makes it slick and funky.

The second part of my Scent Diary from Pitti Fragranze lands to Italy that continues to bring forth brilliant talent.Taking inspiration from Tomasi di Lampedusa novel The Leopard put on screen by Luchino Visconti, perfumer Antonio Alessandria’s latest addition Gattopardo portrays the Sicilian noble soul in chiaroscuro with a bright load of geranium, fig and whiskey set against the opulence of velvety patchouli gilded in beeswax, iris, cocoa and a luscious Sicilian almond pastry trail. Spray, close your eyes and you swear you were a guest of the imperious Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina.

Firenze è rinomata per l'arte rinascimentale ma anche per la calura estiva e gli habitué di Pitti Fragranze lo sanno bene. Non quest'anno però dato che i rovesci ed un calo delle temperature improvviso hanno assicurato una temperatura gradevole all'interno della Stazione Leopolda. Anche il vento del mercato del profumo è in continuo cambiamento e questa edizione ne ha mostrato i primi segni. Infatti mentre di solito gli stand sono suddivisi per distributore, l'ultima disposizione era suddivisa per marchio a favore di una maggior chiarezza e agevolezza regalando anche un appeal più internazionale. Da notare, visitatori ed espositori esteri sono cresciuti e Fragranze 15 sarà ricordata come l'edizione Pacifica con un grande riscontro per marchi da Australia, Nuova Zelanda e Giappone. Vediamo assieme il meglio partendo dalla mia selezione per Çafleurebon.

Fragranze 15: Scent Diary #01

Florence is renowned for Renaissance art but also for the heat in summer and regular attendees to Pitti Fragranze know it very well. Not this year though as a sudden temperature dip with downpours kept the Stazione Leopolda interior cool and enjoyable. Also the wind of the perfume market is ever-changing and this edition shown the first signs of this. In fact while usually booths are mostly divided by Italian distributors, the current layout was divided by brand so that everything was clearly displayed, easily accessible and with a more international appeal. Notably, visitors and exhibitors from overseas notably increased and Fragranze 15 will be remembered as the Pacific edition with successful offerings from brands from Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Let's see the best starting from my choices for Çafleurebon.

Fragranze 15: a presto!

Passato ferragosto, c'è chi soffre la malinconia da rientro e chi invece arriva carico per affrontare il nuovo anno lavorativo. In città la metropolitana si ripopola di volti abbronzati e profumi che cercano di prolungare l'illusione delle spiagge assolate. Prima che crollino le temperature però non manca qualche weekend fuori porta in programma e, per un perfumista gli occhi sono puntati su Pitti Fragranze, che quest'anno sarà nei giorni 8-10 settembre, per scoprire cosa ci spruzzeremo da qui alla prossima estate.

After the dog days and with August blues at best, some try to leverage on the energy gained during the holidays to start a new work year. Downtown the tube is populated with tanned faces and smells trying to extend the illusion of sunny beaches. Before temperature falls down though, there will be still time for some weekend off and for a perfumista Pitti Fragranze is on the to do list of course, scheduled on September 8-10, to discover what's new to spray on from here to the next summer.

Fragranze 14: Scent Diary #1

La quattordicesima edizione di Fragranze verrà ricordata per Numeri & Fiori, ma anche per i ventilator elettrici e per i gelati dato che il caldo di fine estate ha letteralmente fatto sciogliere i visitatori della stazione Leopolda. Dappertutto c'erano ventilator accesi, con ventate di profumo che fluttuavano ovunque. Ma con così tanti nuovi lanci e nuovi marchi, non è stato un compito facile sentirli tutti. Pur facendo del mio meglio, sicuramente ne ho tralasciato qualcuno. Nel fluttuare odoroso, mi sono lasciato guidare dal mio naso per scegliere le dieci migliori proposte, il Best of the show.

Fragranze 14: Scent Diary #1

The 14th edition of Fragranze will be remembered for Numbers & Flowers, but also for electric fans and ice cream as the end of summer heat literally melted all attendees at the Leopolda Station. Fans were lit everywhere, perfumes floating wafting around all. But with so many new launches and new brands, it wasn’t an easy task to smell them all. I did the best I could and may have missed a few. As the scent wafted, I was led by my nose to pick the Best of the show.

So here we go with the personal selection in alphabetical order also published on Cafleurebon.

Fragranze 14: via al conto alla rovescia

L'estate 2016 sarà difficile da dimenticare con il suo tourbillon di viaggi e profumi, dalle mie vacanze nella splendida Dubrovnik (l'antica Ragusa) fino alla fragrante Carovigno (BR) di Smell Festival Estate comprese le nuove emozioni di OSA - Outsider Scents Award. Così senza accorgermene, ho realizzato solo ora che manca una settimana a Pitti Fragranze. Quest'anno il consueto appuntamento fiorentino per scoprire cosa ci spruzzeremo di nuovo è il 9-11 settembre alla Stazione Leopolda e il tema proposto è Numeri e Fiori.

Il tema dei numeri ci richiama subito all'India, patria di materie prime nobili e di grandi matematici, con un interessantissimo focus su questo mercato in espansione. Il numero 150 ci ricorda il compleanno della Industria Ceraria Migone, fondata a Firenze nel 1866, che festeggerà con un evento speciale alla limonaia di Palazzo Corsini per brindare alla sua storia e e al futuro. Tre invece sono le fragranze che accompagneranno Lo Straordinario Sentire, un percorso sensoriale curato dall'Accademia del Profumo nel suggestivo Orto Botanico del Giardino dei Semplici. Resident guest numero uno di Fragranze, Chandler Burr condurrà Caccia ai profumieri di nicchia, un interessante tavola rotonda sul fenomeno recente delle acquisizioni di marchi di nicchia da parte dei grandi gruppi del settore come Estée Lauder, L'Oreal e Puig.

Fragranze 14: counting down the days

Summer 2016 will be remembered like a toubillon of travels and perfumes, from my vacations in beautiful Dubrovnik (the ancient Ragusa) to the scents in Carovigno (BR) with Smell Festival Estate together with the new emotions of OSA - Outsider Scents Award. So before having the time to realize it, here we are with Pitti Fragranze in almost a week. This year the usual florentine event about what we're going to spray is scheduled on september 9-11th at Stazione Leopolda and the proposed theme is Numbers and Flowers.

Numbers get us straight to India, land of noble raw materials and of great mathematician, with an interesting focus on this growing market. The number 150 remembers us the birthday of Industria Ceraria Migone, enstablished in Florence in 1866, that will celebrate with a special event at limonaia di Palazzo Corsini, so come over for a toast to their story and future. Three are the fragrances featured in Lo Straordinario Sentire, a sensorial path curated by Accademia del Profumo and set in Orto Botanico del Giardino dei Semplici. Fragranze resident guest Number One, Chandler Burr is going to talk about What makes the big groups want to acquire your brand?, a conversation with big players about the recent phenomenon of niche brands acquisition by great groups like Estée Lauder, L'Oreal and Puig.

Nanban è il nome che in origine i samurai davano agli stranieri giunti dalle coste a sud dell'isola. Carlos Huber, lascia il suo studio di architettura e le atmosfere coloniali messicane per approdare quale barbaro del sud in Giappone. Porta con se un carico di pepe nero the affumicato e legni esotici che Rodrigo Flores Roux ammorbidisce in un tramonto ambrato di resine e osmanto. Per barbari gentiluomini.

Ineke

Un idillio mi rapisce allo stand di Ineke Ruhland: assieme alla creatrice e a Marika Vecchiattini ci divertiamo a scorrere le materie prime di Idyllwild come fossero istantanee di un coast to coast. La Route 66 è bordata di gambi di rabarbaro spezzati, fiori di pietraia, erba e fieno, bufali e resti di falò all'alba. Particolare l'uso del bushwood che mi ha ricordato il verde ferruginoso dello spinacio con un tocco animale. Assieme a Jack+Jackie, una vaniglia ubriaca di Daiquiri ispirata ai cocktail del presidente Kennedy, Idyllewild è un nuovo capitolo creativo per Ineke. Per chi vuole vivere on the road.

Pitti Fragranze 13: Scent Diary #2

Nanban is the name samourai originally gave to foreigners coming from the south coasts of the island. Carlos Huber, left his architect's club and the mexican colonial atmospheres, lands as a barbarian of the south to Japan. He brings with himself a load of black pepper, smoked black tea and exotic woods softened by  Rodrigo Flores Roux into an ambery sunset with balsams and osmanthus. For barbarian gentlemen.

Ineke

I am taken by an idyll at the booth of Ineke Ruhland: together with the creator and Marika Vecchiattini we have fun going through the raw materials in Idyllwild as they'd be snapshots of a coast to coast trip. Route 66 is bordered with snapped rhubharb stalks, rock flowers, cypresses and hay, buffalos and bonfire remains at dawn. Very particular is the use of a sagebrush oil which reminded me the ferruginous greness of spinach over an animalic background. Together with Jack+Jackie, a boozy Daiquiri vanilla inspired by President Kennedy cocktails at the White House, Idyllewild represents a new chapter of Ineke's olfactory library. Perfect for people living on the road.

Pitti Fragranze 13: Scent Diary #1

Certamente Pitti Fragranze 2015 si farà ricordare per il grande pubblico, ma anche per i tanti stranieri che sempre più vengono a Firenze per avvicinarsi alla profumeria d'autore. A realtà consolidate come Europa, Stati Uniti, Russia e Emirati Arabi, si aggiungono mercati emergenti come Polonia, Ucraina e Qatar, incuriositi soprattutto dalla profumeria italiana.
Ho potuto sniffare fra gli stand solo domenica, ma sufficientemente per farmi un'idea sulle tendenze che le nuove fragranze stanno delineando. Oramai un oud non si nega a nessuno e perfino un emblema del gusto francese come Annick Goutal presenta la sua interpretazione, ma dopo anni di legni, ambre e cuoio i lanci più coraggiosi ritrovano famiglie che sembravano accantonate come floreale ed esperidata. Ecco i primi quattro, tutti italiani.

Pitti Fragranze 13: Scent Diary #1

Pitti Fragranze 2015 will be certainly remembered for the big audience, but also for the great number of people coming to Florence from overseas to discover niche perfumery. In addition to strenghened markets like Europe, United States, Russia and Emirates come emerging markets like Poland, Ukraine and Qatar with big interest above all for italian perfumery.
I had the chance to sniff around on sunday only, yet enough to give me a rough idea of the upcoming trends hinted by the new launches. By now an oud is not denied to anybody and even a symbol of french taste like Annick Goutal or Diptyque introduce their interpretation. After years plenty of woods, ambers and leathers though, the most daring proposals bring back almost forgotten families like hesperidic and florals. Here we go with the first four ones, all from Italy.

Alga rossa: sapore di mare

Ottobre è stato un mese di festeggiamenti per gli amici di Adjiumi perché il forum italiano di appassionati della profumeria ha compiuto otto anni: tanti auguri! Avanti sempre così!

Una delle belle iniziative che animano il gruppo è la condivisione delle materie prime più comunemente usate in profumeria per poterle conoscere e approfondire meglio. Dato che non amo arrivare alle feste di compleanno a mani vuote, ho pensato fosse bello condividere con gli amici di Adjiumi una materia prima misteriosa da sentire alla cieca. L'ho chiamata col nomignolo MPX ma ora finalmente posso svelarvela.

La materia prima X è una straordinaria assoluta di alga rossa (la palmaria palmata che vedete qui sopra) della Bretagna di prima qualità che Mane produce mediante estrazione supercritica in anidride carbonica, una materia preziosa (circa 10.000 euro/Kg) e ancora poco usata in profumeria. In purezza è una materia così viscosa, complessa, e brutale che per me è stato amore a primo sniffo. Spero che sia piaciuta anche ai nasi di adjiumi e abbia stuzzicato la loro immaginazione. A giudicare dalle reazioni che ha suscitato di sicuro non li ha lasciati indifferenti.

Red Seaweed: sea relish

October has been a celebration month for the friends of Adjiumi for the italian forum of perfume lovers is now eight: happy birthday! Go on this way!

One of the good pursuits enlivening the group is to share the most common raw materials in perfumery to smell and understand them better. As I don't feel like turning up at birthday parties empty-handed, I thought it was nice to share with the friends from Adjiumi a mystery raw material to be smelled blind. I simply nicknamed it MPX but finally now I can unveil it.

The raw material X is an incredible top quality red seaweed absolute (palmaria palmata, as shown here on the  left) from Brittany Mane obtains through carbon dioxide supercritical fluid extraction, a precious essence (about 10.000 euro/Kg) still rarely used in perfumery. Undiluted it is such a viscous, complex, brutal raw material that I couldn't help but falling in love with it at first sniff. I hope the Adjiumi crew like it as well and got inspired by it. Judging from the reactions it has rised, surely it didn't left them cold.
