OSA! Award 2017 - Incontriamo i finalisti

OSA! Award 2017 - Meeting the finalists

After introducing the winner of the OSA! Outsider Scents Award 2017 edition, as promised let me tell you more about the other finalists in order of classification. While meeting them during the Smell Festival days in Bologna, I asked them the same questions I gave to Michele Bianchi.

Marco Ceravolo, second in the list with MEMORHYZA and winner of the special mention assigned by the Italian perfume lovers forum Adjiumi, he is born in Ferrara and after studying literature he attended the faculty of Natural Science at the University. He currently lives in Bologna where he works for Ikea. In 2004 he attende the Italian School for Naturopathy but it was only in 2007 that he learned the artisanal soap making techniques and started so playing with soap and fragrances. In 2016 he accomplished his perfume composition training at Smell Atelier with perfumer Martino Cerizza.

E: What's the perfume you wish you created (from every era) and why?
M: It could be Bandit of Piguet because I like its complexity based on a molecule I really love, the isobutyl quinoline. Considering the time it was created, it must have been absolutely ground-breaking and sophisticated.

E: How do you see perfumery and people's approach to smell in the future?
M: Maybe I am not that far from reality if I try to describe a futuristic glove-sort of thing, full of electrical sensors, enabled to connect with our nervous system through the thousand of receptors spread out on our hand surface, able to reach and stimulate those brain areas in control of the sense of smell and so letting us "perceive" a fragrance.

OSA! Award 2017 - E il vincitore è...

I finalisti OSA! Outsider Scents Award 2017
credits Tanja Bochnig

OSA! Outsider Scents Award 2017 finalists

The 2017 edition of OSA! Outsider Scents Award has just ended and emotions still flow intense like the winning fragrance: HUMUS, composed by Michele Bianchi.
This year's theme, the same for the Smell Festival 8th edition with which have dealed the participants is "roots" and each finalist has given his own personal interpretation to it.
As well described by Francesca Faruolo: “Who is familiar with smells has strong roots: undergoing principle of development and nourishment of everything”. And it's creativity the root that fed and developed the desire of these outsiders to train themselves, digging into the knowledge of raw materials of perfumery to dare and harvest the fruit of this path. Let's discover the winner then. In the next post we will talk about the other finalists: meeting them in Bologna I asked them a few questions to learn more about them.

Maestà Tradita 1956-2016 (G. Pesce) Save the date!

Vieni, osserva, tocca, ascolta, annusa, assaggia, emozionati!

Maestà Tradita 1956-2016 (G. Pesce) Save the date!

Come, see, touch, listen, smell, taste, excite! This is the invitation the artist Gaetano Pesce makes us celebrating his 60 years of career with the exhibition promoted by Comune di Firenze and curated by Sergio Risaliti and Vittorio Sgarbi Maestà Tradita 1956-2016, till February 8, 2017 at Museo Novecento in Florence.
While enjoying the irreverent creativity of Pesce, let me bring to your attention the particular multisensorial presentation that above all focuses on smell. In fact the Archistar wanted to collaborate with Leonardo Opali and his Atelier TAF, a volcanic, passionate Vicentin who moved his first olfactory steps at Smell Atelier. Knowing Leonardo since the first editions of Smell Festival in Bologna, I couln't help but asking him about this Amazing project.

Fragranze 14: counting down the days

Summer 2016 will be remembered like a toubillon of travels and perfumes, from my vacations in beautiful Dubrovnik (the ancient Ragusa) to the scents in Carovigno (BR) with Smell Festival Estate together with the new emotions of OSA - Outsider Scents Award. So before having the time to realize it, here we are with Pitti Fragranze in almost a week. This year the usual florentine event about what we're going to spray is scheduled on september 9-11th at Stazione Leopolda and the proposed theme is Numbers and Flowers.

Numbers get us straight to India, land of noble raw materials and of great mathematician, with an interesting focus on this growing market. The number 150 remembers us the birthday of Industria Ceraria Migone, enstablished in Florence in 1866, that will celebrate with a special event at limonaia di Palazzo Corsini, so come over for a toast to their story and future. Three are the fragrances featured in Lo Straordinario Sentire, a sensorial path curated by Accademia del Profumo and set in Orto Botanico del Giardino dei Semplici. Fragranze resident guest Number One, Chandler Burr is going to talk about What makes the big groups want to acquire your brand?, a conversation with big players about the recent phenomenon of niche brands acquisition by great groups like Estée Lauder, L'Oreal and Puig.

Maria Candida Gentile Luberon (2012)

"There are a few things that I've learned in life: always throw salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for good luck, and fall in love whenever you can” A. Hoffman

Last week I was so lucky to be in Carovigno for Smell Festival Estate and to spend some time talking to Maria Candida Gentile about her creative world. Travelling is an intense dimension to her where smells get impressed in mind like a travel diary: "I came to Puglia by car, loaded by the smell of hay, of the garrigue. It's already like imagining a perfume".
Then I also had the chance to smell again some of her creations among which Luberon, a beautiful lavender she imagined while travelling in South France. Lavender is rarely my cup of tea, but I have some pretty noteworthy exceptions. What I smell here is bewitching and instantly took my memory back to Practical Magic, the popular novel by Alice Hoffman, and to the review I wrote four years ago for The Perfume Magazine. Moreover now it's lavender harvest time so let me repost an excerpt here.

Smell Festival Estate: siete caldi?

Smell Festival Estate: are you hot?

Here we are, next weekend starts the first edition of Smell Festival Estate guested by Carovigno di Puglia and, given the illustrious recent tweets from Puglia and the meteo, I can't help but quoting: "Siete pronti? Siete caldi?". "Anchio".
Pity Mrs. Ciccone had to leave because, being a well known perfume lover, I'm sure she'd have enjoyed the full agenda waiting for us at Castello Dentice di Frasso with events, natural beauties in Torre Guaceto and the joys of apulian cuisine.

Aqua Finae: diving in fragrant Portofino

As a child, you surely you happened to do this: grab a seashell and hold it to your ear, close your eyes and enjoy the echo of the tide trapped inside that odd shape. Human connection with the sea is so intimate and primitive that before leaving, fishermen felt the need to touch the water, deeply inhale, hold their hands in prayer and trust this way in the waves.
That's the magic you can feel in a place I discovered end of June, starting from Milan in the direction of Portofino. Its name is Aqua Finae. The address is on the left of Liguria's most famous square, where the eye gets lots into the sea in calata Marconi, 45.

Natural Magic: the gardens of Caserta Royal Palace

Venus bath
One of the most amazing events I attended during this year's edition of Smell Festival dell'Olfatto was the virtual tour Addolorata Ines Peduto and Gerardo Pasquale Iodice led us have through the gardens of Caserta Royal Palace.
Of course the Royal Palace is pretty famous for its sumptuous staircases and halls which have also been portrayed in various movies. Less often people have heard about the importance of its gardens built in the middle of the XVIII century while the curiosity of botanists and the cravings of colonial exoticism teased the fantasies of the West with endemic species coming from Eastern and Western Indies. That's how the English Garden and the Old Wood of the Palace were born.
