Kate Winslet as Tilly Dunnage
When I first saw the 2015 Australian revenge comedy-drama "The Dressmaker", I immediately got a scent association popping to my mind. The film itself is not a masterpiece, but it is one of a kind and while the main character Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) unfolds a pitch-percect wardrobe from the award-winning costume designer Margot Wilson that quotes the best New Look outfits from Balenciaga, Balmain, Dior and Fath, you can't help but thinking of her leaving trails of Jolie Madame while she carries her sewing machine across the dusty hometown.

I Maestri del Profumo: Germaine Cellier (1909-1976) (3)

Bandit - Bouldoires (1948)

Bandit ad by Bouldoires (1948)
The genius of Germaine Cellier can only be measured within the frame of her larger-than-life, remarkable creations.
The crucial event was meeting Robert Piguet, an ex-modelist trained at Paul Poiret's atelier who after WWII enstablished his own fashion house. His style is lively, full of drive and desire for reward after the dark years of the war.

In 1944 he debuted with a mythical collection inspired by buccaneers and their adventures by faraway seas that was paired by the launch of Bandit, a leathery chypre bearing a brutal sensuality. To evoke the dangerous smell of leather and forays Germaine dares to use 1% of iso-butyl-quinoleine, a molecule doused till then with fear for its violence.

I Maestri del profumo: Germaine Cellier (1909-1976) (2)

In spiaggia a Belle-Île (1930 c.a.)

The Masters of Perfume: Germaine Cellier (1909-1976) (2)

At the beach in Belle-Île (1930s)
If you enjoyed the first part of this portrait of Germaine Cellier, surely her first years as a perfumer will thrill you, specially the years spent in Roure Bertrand Dupont, that ain't always easy. After a brief period in functional perfumery at Colgate-Palmolive, in 1943 Germaine Cellier gets back to Roure.
Till the end of the 1920s perfumery was ruled by names like Houbigant, Guerlain, Coty and Caron. It was only since a decade that fashion houses ventured in the olfactory realm and designers like Poiret, Patou, Lanvin and Chanel directly collaborated with perfumers in a special, almost exclusive relationship. So Roure and other producers, essentially confined themselves to provide them with natural and synthetic raw materials, innovative bases and specialties for the time. But the wind was changing.

The Masters of Perfume: Germaine Cellier (1909-1976) (1)

Working life has never been gentle to women, specially for the most technical positions. It's the case of perfumery employment where, aside a mysterious Madame Zede who created the first Lanvin perfumes and Jacqueline Fraysse, André Fraysse sister who worked for the fur makers Weil, there are almost no traces of women who imposed themselves before WWII. "Architecture is a job for men, but I always pretended that wasn't true" used to say one of my favorite designers, Gae Aulenti. Sagaciously applied to perfumery, the same motto perfectly fits to the greatest woman perfumer of the past century: Germaine Cellier.

Synesthesia Project: inspirazioni d'autore

Gabriel Garcia
Vi piacciono l'arte ed i profumi? Amate viaggiare?

Monsieur Balmain (1964)

"Good fashion is evolution, not revolution" Pierre Balmain

When Pierre Balmain during an interview gave this definition of fashion, he was already a legendary fashion designer famous for dressing the crowned heads of half world and Hollywood stars wrapping their curves with the classic coquettish elegance of his Jolie Madame. But if Balmain's fashion is conservative, its olfactory trail is decidedly cheeky if not revolutionary and marks the postwar years with the bold style of Germaine Cellier. So in 1964, while publishing his memories My years and seasons, Balmain wanted to launch his first masculine fragrance, Monsieur Balmain which is one of the last masterpieces the imperious Germaine left us.

L'Heure Attendue (Jean Patou - 1946)

L'Heure Attendue (1949)

L'Heure Attendue (Jean Patou - 1946)

L'Heure Attendue ad (1949)
The end of WWII was an awaited moment by both winners and vanquished. The conflict heavily tried the Europe, torn apart by the angst well pictured in artworks like Guernica. On the other hand when the war ended perfumery would have fed the longing for serenity and optimism with great energy also glancing again overseas. Even a sorceress skilled in ferocoius poisons à la Bandit like Germaine Cellier would have concocted her brightest juice for Nina Ricci, Coeur-Joie's sunny violet. It's time for hopeful names like Avon's Wishing, Air Nouveau (new air) by Houbigant and many others. The house of Jean Patou replied with L'Heure Attendue, the awaited hour surprising with unexpected paths instead of going for lightness.
