I Maestri del Profumo: Jean Carles (1892–1966) (1)

Facendo un parallelo con la pittura dove si parla di "Maestri del colore", ho pensato ai "Maestri del Profumo" non solo sapevano usare il colore (le materie prime fragranti) ma anche perché le loro opere sono modello di perfezione e fonte di ispirazione per molti. E proprio parlando di scuola non potevo che iniziare da Jean Carles. Oltre ad essere stato un naso prolifico, nel 1946 fonda un metodo didattico per imparare a comporre fragranze che ancora oggi è alla base dell'insegnamento in scuole come Cinquième sens, l'italiana Mouillettes&Co o la stessa Scuola Internazionale di Givaudan, all'epoca Roure-Bertrand dove Carles iniziò a sperimentarlo formando generazioni di profumieri tra cui suo figlio Marcel Carles (che gli succederà alla direzione della scuola), Michel Hy (Yves Saint Laurent Y, Calandre di Paco Rabanne) e Jacques Polge.

Doing a parallelism with painting where we talk about "Masters of colour", I thought about the "Masters of Perfume" not only because they mastered the use of colour (fragrant raw materials) but also because their works are a reference of perfection and taken as inspiration by many creators. Just speaking about masters I couldn't start from anybody else than Jean Carles. Aside being a prolific nose, in 1946 he founded a teaching method to learn how to compose fragrances that's still the base of the courses held in schools like Cinquième sens, the italian Mouillettes&Co or ex-Roure-Bertrand, now Givaudan's International School itself where back in time Carles started teaching to generations of perfumers among which his son Marcel Carles (that will succeed him to the direction of the school), Michel Hy (Yves Saint Laurent Y, Paco Rabanne Calandre) and Jacques Polge.

Blind Sniff Roulette #3: Multiple Rouge di Humiecki&Graef

Scegliere l'ultima fragranza del Blind Sniff Roulette non è stato facile: come avrete capito il filo coduttore dell'edizione di quest'anno erano le note fruttate sia in Pomegranate Noire che in DK Unleaded, però volevo qualcosa all'avanguardia, un fruttato non convenzionale. Quale migliore occasione per parlare di un duo creativo che ha dato vita a questa linea di "profumeria emozionale" con uno stile riconoscibile e personalissimo che parla la lingua del futuro? Naturalmente parlo di Humiecki&Graef e del loro psichedelico Multiple Rouge. Creata da Christophe Laudamiel, parfumeur maison del marchio, è una fragranza ispirata all'euforia, alla stravaganza e al divertimento. Quasi si fosse in una discoteca-labirinto, si rincorrono veloci note di frutta briose, fragoline di bosco, arancia, pesca e ananas ghiacciate circondate da spezie frizzanti (coriandolo, cannella e cilantro) e avvolte dalla bolla lucida e fluorescente di note floreal-ozoniche su un fondo di immortelle e foglie di violetta. Bravi! Avete centrato il mood quindi chi per l'aspetto euforico e spensierato (colori solari o bianco, luoghi e musiche tropicali come il bossa nova, animali vivaci come gazzelle, tucani e colibrì, camicie e pantaloni di lino, film come Paradise e Laguna blu, Josephine Baker), chi per l'aspetto psichedelico, stupefacente e futuribile (Color mercurio, animali come lombrico e lumaca, luoghi surreali come la foresta pluviale, percussioni ossessive, film come Enter the void e Arancia meccanica, Wilbur Larch). Blind Sniff Roulette #3: Humiecki&Graef Multiple Rouge

Chosing the last fragrances for the Blind Sniff Roulette wasn't an easy task: as you already guessed, the thread of this year's edition were the fruity notes both in Pomegranate Noire and in DK Unleaded, but I was looking for something avantgarde, unconventionally fruity. What a better occasion to talk about the creative duo behind this line of "emotional perfumery" with a personal unmistakable style speaking in a future language? Of course I'm talking about Humiecki&Graef and their psychedelic Multiple Rouge. Created by the brand in-house perfumer Christophe Laudamiel, it is a fragrance inspired by euphoria, eccentricity and fun. Almost like being in a big labyrinth-discotheque, lively fruity notes chase each other fast, wood strawberries, frozen orange, peach and ananas surrounded by sparkling spices (coriander, cinnamon and cilantro) and wrapped up by a glossy fluorescent bubble of floral-ozonic notes over a violet leaves and immortelle base. Bravo! You nailed the mood from one hand for the euphoric and thoughtless aspect (Warm colours or white, tropical places and music like bossa nova, lively animanls like gazelles, toucans and hummingbirds, linen shirts and pants, movies like Paradise and The blue lagoon, Josephine Baker) and for the other hand for the psychedelic, astonishing and futurist aspect (quicksilver colour, animals like worms and snails, surreal places like the rain forest, obsessive percussions, movies like Enter the void and Clockwork orange, Wilbur Larch). Sancti, Fortis, Tumultu: i Liquides Imaginaires di Philippe di Méo

Poco tempo fa dopo cinque anni di assenza da Parigi, ho avuto l'occasione di tornarci per lavoro e son riuscito a ritagliarmi un piccolo tour per la città, oltre che per un the da Mariage Frères, per andare a caccia di curiosità e nuovi stimoli profumati. Ovviamente la priorità è andata ai più esclusivi oggetti del desiderio, le fragranze che si trovano unicamete nella Ville Lumière ed in nessun altro posto al mondo. Affascinato dalla critica che ne aveva fatto Octavian Coifan, per la prima tappa mi sono diretto da L'Eclaireur, uno storico concept store nel Marais, per sentire i nuovissimi Les Liquides Imaginaires che stavano esposti ieraticamente in vetrina nelle loro Amphorae "Reliquiae".

Few time ago, after five years missing from Paris, I had the chance to get over there for my work and I've been able to take the time for a small tour downtown, aside for a nice tea chez Mariage Frères, also to hunt for curiosities and new scented stimuli. Of course the priority went to the most exclusive and desired objects, the fragrances you can only find at the Ville Lumière and nowhere else in the world. Charmed by the review Octavian Coifan made out of them, for the first stop I went straight to L'Eclaireur, a storical concept store in the Marais, to smell the recently launched Les Liquides Imaginaires that were showing off solemnly in the window with their Amphorae "Reliquiae".
