Se anche voi siete stati catturati dalla schiettezza di Michael Edwards e dalla precisione chirurgica del suo linguaggio, certamente vi piacerà ancora di più la seconda parte dell'intervista per celebrare Fragrances of the World in cui Michael non ha perso l'occasione di svelare qualche verità sul futuro della profumeria.

E: Per l'edizione del trentesimo anniversario, la tua famosa Fragrance Wheel rinasce con una cronologia illustrata che mostra l'evoluzione delle fragranze iconiche per ciascuna famiglia. Ti andrebbe di parlarmi di questa evoluzione e di come le famiglie sono cambiate durante gli anni?
M: Per il trentesimo anno, mi sono reso conto che mi ero lasciato dietro un sacco di fragranze iconiche. Così ho pensato che sarebbe stato piuttosto interessante se avessi creato una cronologia per mostrare come ogni famiglia è evoluta attraverso le fragranze. Sono le fragranze iconiche the hanno spostato i confini di ciascuna famiglia. Se cerchi nel libro, vedrai che queste fragranze hanno lo stato di Icone. Se poi sono francesi, propabilmente ho scritto di loro nel mio Perfume Legends.

If like me you couldn't help but deeply admire Michael Edwards for the surgical precision of his words and for his intellectual honesty, you will surely be even more pleased to read the second part of the interview celebrating Fragrances of the World of course where Michael took the chance to disclose a couple of truths about the future of perfumery. 

E: For the 30th Anniversary Edition, your famous Fragrance Wheel comes to life with a pictorial timeline showing the evolution of the iconic fragrances within each family. Would you like to tell me more about this evolution and how families have changed during the years?
M: For my 30th year what I realized I left on my back a lot of iconic fragrances. So I thought it would have been rather interesting if I gave you a timeline showing you in each family how the fragrances have developed. It's the iconic fragrances that moved that family forward. If you look in the book you’ll see that those Iconic status. if they’re French I probably wrote about them in my Perfume Legends.

Chamade: il coraggio di amare

Ci vuole coraggio per vivere un amore. Occorre un po' d'incoscienza e la leggerezza di un cuore semplice che però abbia il potere di sgretolare tutte le barriere che mettiamo davanti a noi stessi, le aspettative della famiglia e le convenzioni sociali.
Sentendolo si intuisce che è proprio quella semplicità ribelle, quella leggerezza che Jean-Paul Guerlain deve avere avuto in mente creando Chamade, un orientale-fruttato moderno che prende il nome e l'ispirazione da un racconto di Françoise Sagan del 1965 dal titolo omonimo.

"La Chamade", termine con cui in epoca napoleonica si indicava il tamburo che batteva ritirata, narra della storia di una donna combattuta tra gli agi della vita borghese con un uomo maturo e benestante e il sentimento vero e profondo per il suo vero amore, un semplice artista spiantato che l'ama per quello che è e non per quello che rappresenta.

One must be brave to live a love story. A little bit of inconsciousness is needed and the lightness of a simple heart having the power to shatter all the barriers we put behind ourselves, our family expectations and social conventions.
Smelling it you can guess it's just that rebel simplicity, that lightness that Jean-Paul Guerlain must have had in mind creating Chamade, a modern fruity-oriental perfume inspired and named after a 1965's nover by Françoise Sagan with the same title.

"La Chamade", term used during the napoleonic age to indicate the drum used to call back the host, is about a woman torn among the comforts of the bourgeois life with an older and well-to-do man and the real deep feeling for her true love, a simple penniless artist that loves her for who she is an not for what she represents.
