Smellavolando

Nell'attesa di raccontarvi di più dell'edizione 2014 di Smell Festival dell'Olfatto che si è conclusa da poco a Bologna, voglio stuzzicare il vostro appetito sorvolando le pagine dello Smellavolario, il dizionario pindarico del profumo nato dall'immaginario di Francesca Faruolo che, come una molecola instabile, è sempre in fermento, pronta a reagire piacevolmente ad ogni stimolo.

Come fossero finger food per la mente e per l'olfatto, ho pensato di servirvi piccoli estratti, frasi che mi hanno colpito dei vari autori, fra cui Bernard Bourgeois, Christophe Laudamiel, Michel Roudnitska e altri che hanno partecipato a questo progetto.

Waiting to tell you more about the 2014 edition of Smell Festival dell'Olfatto just ended a few weeks ago in Bologna, let me tease your appetite sweeping the pages of the Smellavolario, the pindaric dictionary of perfume born from the imagination of Francesca Faruolo that as an instable molecule, is always in turmoil, ready to pleasantly react to stimuli.

Like finger food for mind and nose, I thought to offer you small quotes that struck me from various authors among which Bernard Bouorgeois, Christophe Laudamiel, Michel Roudnitska and others who joined this project.

Esxence 2014: siete pronti? Are you ready?

La brand-list c'è. Il contest c'è. Il calendario eventi c'è. Finalmente alla Triennale tutto è pronto per la sesta edizione di Esxence ed anche quest'anno il menù si conferma ricco sia per chi è curioso di scoprire le novità che troveremo nei negozi prossimamente che per chi ha fame di cultura olfattiva.
Oltre ad ospitare il contest The Art of the Scent, il tempio minanese del design offrirà i suoi spazi a vari eventi. Uno sguardo particolare sarà rivolto al medioriente grazie al workshop di Alireza Khazal Artistic Perfumery in Middle East, alla lecture di Nicola Pozzani Smells of Saudi Arabia e alla presentazione dell'Ufficio Turistico dell'Oman Fragrances and Myths of Arabia Felix.
Si riconferma anche la partecipazione dell'Osmothèque con la consueta selezione di chicche dal passato e con una conferenza imperdibile: Bernard Bourgeois ci racconterà La chimica come fonte di creatività in profumeria.
Esxence renderà omaggio a Michael Edwards per il trentennio del suo Fragrances of the world a cui seguirà anche un altro omaggio a Sandrine Videault, allieva di Edmond Roudnitska che ci ha lasciati giovanissima l'anno scorso. Proprio ai capolavori di Edmond Roudnitska è dedicato l'Aperitivo profumato multisensoriale di Marika Vecchiattini.
Pietra miliare fra gli eventi di Esxence restano gli incontri di Mouillettes&Co che in Olf'Evolution darà la possibilità di testare le proprie abilità e di scoprire le materie e le tendenze olfattive più recenti.

Finally everything's ready at the Triennale for the Esxence's sixth edition and also this year there's a menù full of interesting things for who's eager to discover all the news that will land in the shops soon and for who's craving some good olfactory culture.
Aside guesting the contest The Art of the Scent, the minanese temple of design will give space to several events. A special focus will be put on the Middle East thanks to Alireza Khazal's workshop Artistic Perfumery in Middle East, to Nicola Pozzani's lecture about the Smells of Saudi Arabia and to the Oman Tourism Office introducing the Fragrances and Myths of Arabia Felix.
The usual participation of the Osmothèque in addition to the yearly selection of gems from the past will bring to Milan a lecture that can't be missed: Bernard Bourgeois will speak about The chemistry in perfume as a source of creativity.
Esxence will pay hommage to Michael Edwards in the 30th anniversary of his Fragrances of the world followed by another tribute to Sandrine Videault, pupil of Edmond Roudnitska that passed away too soon the last year. To the masterpieces created by Edmond Roudnitska is dedicated the polysensorial Perfumed Cocktail led by Marika Vecchiattini.
A staple amont Esxence events are the Mouillettes&Co workshops that with Olf'Evolution will give you the chance to test your skills and discover the latest olfactory trends and raw materials.

Come sempre, l'Osmothèque con le sue conferenze rimane una delle presenze per cui vale la pena di aspettare Esxence. Quest'anno poi hanno esaudito un mio grande desiderio (senza nemmeno averlo espresso) portando a Milano la monografia dedicata alle materie di origine animale in profumeria che mi sono perso l'anno scorso a Versailles e che l'Osmothèque riproporrà il prossimo 14 maggio.

Le materie prime di origine animale sono state usate per secoli nella profumeria tradizionale sia per il loro ruolo di fissatori ma anche per le note particolarmente vibranti ed evocative che ci parlano con un linguaggio atavico e misterioso. Sarebbe difficile tentare di condensare in un post la brillante esposizione di Bernard Bourgeois su ambra grigia, muschio di cervo, castoreum e zibetto. Siccome oltre alle bellissime materie e creazioni presentate dall'Osmothèque ho avuto modo di sentirne altre vecchie e nuove contenenti ambra grigia, ho deciso di parlarvi proprio di questa materia affascinante il cui uso millenario si perde nel mito: l'oro galleggiante.

As usual, the Osmothèque with its lectures is one of the presences it's worth waiting for at Esxence. Moreover this year they fulfilled one of my big wishes (and I didn't even had to ask for it) bringing to Milan the monographic lecture about animal raw materials in perfumery that I missed the last year in Versailles and that they are going to repeat on May 14th.

Raw materials coming from animals have been used for centuries in traditional perfumery both as a fixative and also because of their particular vibrating and evocative notes that speak to us in their atavic and mysterious voice. It would be difficult trying to resume in a single post Bernard Bourgeois brilliant speech about ambergris, deer musk, castoreum and civet. As besides the beautiful materials and creations the Osmothèque led us smell I also recently had the chance to smell old and new perfumes containing ambergris, I want to tell you more about this fascinating material which millenary usage is lost in the myth: the floating gold.
