La Part des Anges: distillati e profumi

C'è un modo di dire che accomuna profumi e distillati: la part des anges. Giocando un doppio senso, si parla di spiriti o meglio di angeli per intendere in profumeria la parte dell'odore naturale di un fiore che va persa durante il processo di estrazione e che quidi sale agli angeli.
Invece, parlando di distillati, la parte degli angeli è quella piccola quantità di alcol che evapora durante l'affinamento in botte. Entrambi profumi e distillati ci attraversano ma, mentre il primo restituisce una magica illusione, il secondo svela la verità. Ad ogni modo la parte degli angeli è però il prezzo da pagare ai cherubini per poter trasformare il meglio della natura in nettare sublime ai nostri sensi. E allora perché deliziarne solo uno alla volta quando si può godere delle sinestesie?
La risposta al team di Esxence che il 21 e 22 novembre scorso ha patrocinato una degustazione di profumi e distillati a Milano da Bicerìn, nuova enoteca nel quartiere di Porta Venezia che promette di organizzare molti incontri per gli appassionati del buon bere. Grazie al profumiere Antonio Alessandria e alla sommelier FISAR Milano Duomo Stefania Turato non sono mancate sensazioni forti e spunti interessanti, parlando di angeli, anche per i regali natalizi.

La Part des Anges: distillates and perfumes

There's an idiomatic expression common to perfumes and distillates: la part des anges. Punning, let's talk about spirits or better angels to indicate in perfumery the part of a flower smell in nature that gets lost during the extraction process an so, rises to the angels.
Instead, speaking about distillates, the part of angels is the small amount of alcohol that evaporates while aging in barrels. Both perfumes and distillates penetrate us but while the first renders a magic illusion, the latter reveals the truth. In any case the part of angels is the price to be payed to Cherubim for having the best of nature turned into a sublime juice to our senses. So, why delighting just one sense at a time when we can have synesthesias?
The answer comes from the Esxence team that on November 21 and 22 promoted a perfumes and distillates tasting in Milano at Bicerìn, a new wine bar in the district of Porta Venezia which aims to make other events for the drinks lovers. Thanks to the perfumer Antonio Alessandria and the FISAR Milano Duomo sommelier Stefania Turato we got strong stimuli and interesting ideas, speaking about angels, also for the Christmas gifts.

Penhaligon's per Meadham Kirchhoff: Tralala (B. Duchaufour 2014)

Il nome di Edward Meadham e Benjamin Kirchhoff suonerà famigliare ai più modaioli di voi. Forse perché la griffe è nata solo nel 2007 oppure perché è venduta soprattutto nel Regno Unito, io non avevo mai sentito parlare di loro prima (e questo significa che non seguo più la moda come un tempo) così ho provveduto ad un aggiornamento. Mi è bastato però guardare alcune immagini delle loro passerelle per entrare nel loro mondo kitsch e scanzonato che mischia ispirazioni passate e presenti con una mano ben precisa perché, come dicono loro, “Non abbiamo una cifra stilistica, ma piuttosto una calligrafia. Amiamo raccontare storie in modi diversi”. Uno dei modi diversi in cui amano raccontare storie è attraverso i profumi al punto che, dopo aver profumato alcune passerelle con Hammam Bouquet, Cornoubia ed altri classici Penhaligon's hanno scelto scrivere il loro racconto olfattivo assieme a Bertrand Duchaufour.

The name of Edward Meadham e Benjamin Kirchhoff will sound familiar to the fashion junkies among you. Maybe because it's a brand enstablished only in 2007 or because it's mainly sold in the UK, I never heard about them before (this also means now I don't follow fashion as I used to) so I thought I needed an update. A glance to some outfits from their catwalks though sufficed to me to enter their kitsch and unconventional world mixing inspirations from present and past with a well defined touch because as they say, “We do not have a signature but rather a handwriting. We like to tell stories in different ways”. One of the different ways they like to use telling stories is through perfumes as they shown scenting some catwalks with Hammam Bouquet, Cornoubia and other Penhaligon's classics, so they chose to write their own olfactory novel together with Bertrand Duchaufour.

Pensate ad una favola ambientata in Rajasthan, al confine indiano col Pakistan. Non sono mai stato in Rajasthan, ma dalle foto che ho visto me lo immagino di una bellezza da togliere il respiro, un paese dove l'aria è carica di profumi così intensi da restare impressi sui vestiti come pure nella mente.

Vaara è una bimba nata a Jodhpur, in un palazzo da sogno, ed è la gioia di suo nonno, Sua Altezza il Maharadja Gaj Singh II che ha voluto celebrare la sua nascita dedicandole un profumo, un'essenza che catturasse l'anima dei giardini esotici, dei mercati di spezie e stoffe sgargianti e il legame profondo della sua famiglia con la propria terra. Il saggio Maharadja commissionò la fragranza alla rinomata casa inglese di fragranze Penhaligon's che inviò a corte il mastro profumiere Messer Duchaufour per ricreare questo incanto. Viste le premesse favolose, potete immaginare come non stessi nella pelle dalla curiosità di sentire il risultato di quattro anni di lavoro.

Think of a tale set in Rajasthan, at the indian frontier with Pakistan. I've never been to Rajasthan but from the pictures I've seen I imagine it as a breathless beauty, a land with such intense perfumes filling the air that's impossible to wash them off of your clothes as well as of your memory.

Vaara is a baby girl born in Jodhpur, in a dreamlike palace and she's the joy of her grandfather, His Highness the Maharadja Gaj Singh II who wanted to celebrate her birth with a perfume, an essence capturing the soul of the exotic gardens, the colorful spices and fabrics markets and his family's deep love and connection with his land. The wise Maharadja appointed the english renowned fragrance house Penhaligon's to make it, so they sent the master perfumer Sir Duchaufour to recreate this magic. Considering the extraordinary background, you can guess how much I was bursting with the curiosity to smell the result of four years of work.

Verres et Flacons: l'ebbrezza del profumo

ebbrezza [eb-bréz-za]: s. f. stato euforico o confusionale prodotto da abuso di alcolici o di sostanze eccitanti | (fig.) esaltazione, rapimento, trasporto causati da una sensazione molto intensa.

Stato euforico e trasporto non sono mancati da Boudoir 36 a Catania nella bella serata dedicata a "Verres et Flacons" sottolineata dal jazz che echeggiava per via Santa Filomena invitando a lasciarsi andare come negli anni ruggenti. E' sempre un piacere scambiare idee con Antonio e la sua disponibilità e la sintonia consolidata hanno permesso di realizzare ancora un evento dedicato ad olfatto e gusto, stavolta con un tocco chic in più. Grazie! Ci siamo divertiti tantissimo con la complicità della pittrice Bruna Caniglia che come una novella Tamara de Lempicka ha giocato con noi accogliendo gli ospiti meravigliati da questo tuffo nella Parigi del 1930, nel primo bar de parfums della storia.

Verres et Flacons: the thrill of perfume

Excitement and pleasure didn't miss at Boudoir 36 in Catania during "Verres et Flacons", a beautiful evening accompanied by the jazz echoing in via Santa Filomena and inviting to get loose as a goose like in the roaring years. It's always a pleasure to brainstorm with Antonio, he's very helpful and being on the same wavelength has allowed us to do another event dedicated to taste and smell, this time with a chic touch more. Thank you! We had a lot of fun together with the paintress Bruna Caniglia playing with us as a second Tamara de Lempicka welcoming the guests amazed by this jump to Paris in 1930, at the first bar de parfums in history.
