Esxence 2016: Scent Diary #1

Esxence 2016: Scent Diary #1

Less than a month ago we saw at Esxence 2016 more and more international visitors, which on one hand is a proof niche perfumery is less and less niche and a wide public nowadays knows and enjoys it. On the other hand this rises a warning about too many launches, staying true to the original spirit of indie perfumery, pursuing original inspirations more than market trends and easy money. More and more this will draw the line dividing true indie perfumery from the grey area of the I'd love to be commercial, but I can't.
Despite the increasing presence of real (and fake) middle eastern brands, the infinity symbol 8 still crowns Italy as the land of neverending creativity also confirmed by the success overseas of italian perfumers like Maria Candida Gentile, Antonio Alessandria, Cristiano Canali, Luca Maffei and Michele Marin. Let's start so with the first part of the Scent Diary all white, red and green.

Pitti Fragranze 13: Scent Diary #1

Ecco i primi quattro, tutti italiani.

Pitti Fragranze 13: Scent Diary #1

Pitti Fragranze 2015 will be certainly remembered for the big audience, but also for the great number of people coming to Florence from overseas to discover niche perfumery. In addition to strenghened markets like Europe, United States, Russia and Emirates come emerging markets like Poland, Ukraine and Qatar with big interest above all for italian perfumery.
I had the chance to sniff around on sunday only, yet enough to give me a rough idea of the upcoming trends hinted by the new launches. By now an oud is not denied to anybody and even a symbol of french taste like Annick Goutal or Diptyque introduce their interpretation. After years plenty of woods, ambers and leathers though, the most daring proposals bring back almost forgotten families like hesperidic and florals. Here we go with the first four ones, all from Italy.

Esxence 2015: Keynotes (I parte)

Esxence 2015: Keynotes (part I)

Esxence - The Scent of Excellence is over and being really busy, I honestly didn't have the chance to properly smell much around for venturing a review or a top-ten. Though lending an ear to the music and leaving out some falling pitch, I could tell it sounded like a volitive F major tuning.
The upcoming Expo 2015 and the new location inside The Mall brought through the skyscrapers of the new minalese skyline a wave of widespread enthusiasm.
This longing for relaunch and italian pride not only can be sniffed, but is palpable through many marks.

Since ever summer is my favourite season not only because of the end of school year and the forecoming holidays but for the explosion of colours and smells I long for the rest of the year. We had quite a weird season this year and nevertheless the rough and sweet smell of mature hay and crops filled the padanian countriside at last. Its civilized counterpart instead are the insolent magnolias spreading throughout the gardens their strange aroma of grapefruit drenched apricots and milk dashed green tea so intense to pierce the tarry sultriness of August in Milan..
Magnolia is a botanical fossil: in fact it is said that the first flowers bloomed on earth were ancestors of magnolias featuring the same perfect simmetry that makes them split in two identical parts no matter along which axis you chose to dissect them. This provided Frédéric Malle with the name for my favourite candle in the line: Jurassic Flower, created by Carlos Benaïm from the headspace of magnolia grandiflora.
