Quando l'artista è innocuo, allora è anche inutile. E' una riflessione che credo valga per tutte le arti, compresa la profumeria. Anni fa ho avuto il piacere di parlare con Mustafa Sabbagh proprio del potere che le immagini e l'olfatto hanno di oltrepassare la nostra scorza, di infettare (o guarire) i nostri sensi e il nostro pensiero.
A seguito del successo della sua prima mostra antologica al MAXI, e della pièce-omaggio "Invasioni" che la storica compagnia performativa Néon Teatro ha voluto tributargli, sino al 15 aprile presso il concept espositivo intermediale di Contemporary Cluster a Roma l'immaginario di Mustafà Sabbagh sarà reinterpretato da una narrazione multisensoriale grazie anche ad un progetto olfattivo sperimentale che ha coinvolto oltre allo stesso artista anche la designer Francesca Gotti e il profumiere Luca Maffei.

When the artist is harmless, then he's also useless. That's a reflection I believe can be applied to all arts, perfumery included. A few years ago I had the pleasure to talk to Mustafa Sabbagh about the power images and smells have to break through our skin, to infect (or heal) our senses and our mind.
Following the success of his first anthological exhibition at MAXXI and of the tribute-play "Invasioni" the renowned performative company Néon Teatro dedicated to him, till April 15 at the exhibition multimedia concept of Contemporary Cluster in Rome Mustafà Sabbagh's artistic aesthetics will be renterpreted with a multisensorial narration thanks also to an innovative olfactory project involving the artist with the designer Francesca Gotti and the perfumer Luca Maffei.

La passione per i profumi nell'era dei social network ha i suoi vantaggi: puoi imparare facilmente guardando le immagini, leggendo e confrontandoti con persone ben informate da tutto il mondo. Di recente ho avuto la fortuna di entrare in contatto con una donna squisita, la più grande collezionista russa di profumi vintage, nonché collega blogger di aromablog.ru: Ekaterina Khmelevskaya. È stata così generosa da farmi sentire uno dei Guerlain più rari che reca l'etichetta misteriosa Chypre 53.
Il nome in se è alquanto curioso. Gli Champs Elysées sono vicini a Rue Cambon, ma qui non siamo chez Chanel che metteva dei numeri come portafortuna sui flaconi di profumo. Chez Guerlain hanno sempre preferito nomi ispirati alla natura, romantici oppure esotici come Violette de Madame, Une fleure qui meurt o Shalimar. Allora come mai questo nome?
Molto prima di Le Labo, la mia prima supposizione era che 53 potesse riferirsi al numero degli ingredient utilizzati che significherebbe una composizione abbastanza stilizzata per l'epoca.

The passion for perfumes in the social network era has its advantages: you can easily learn by looking at pictures, reading and discussing with knowledgeable people all over the world. Recently I have been so lucky to get in touch with a lovely woman who's one of the finest Russian vintage perfume collectors and the fellow blogger behind aromablog.ru: Ekaterina Khmelevskaya. She's been so nice to let me smell one of the rarest Guerlain bearing the mystery label Chypre 53.
The name itself is pretty curious. Champs Elysées are close to Rue Cambon, but we're not chez Chanel who put numbers as lucky charm on perfume bottles. Chez Guerlain they always went for nature inspired, romantic or exotic names like Violette de Madame, Une fleure qui meurt or Shalimar. So why this name?
Long time before Le Labo, my first guess was 53 could refer to the number of the ingredient, which would mean a pretty stylized composition for the time.

Ispirato dai primi esploratori che hanno inaugurato i commerce fra India e Francia durante il regno di Lugi XIV, Rahele edp è la nuova gemma nata dalla collaborazione fra Neela Vermeire ed il maestro profumiere Bertrand Duchaufour ed è di influenza più occidentale delle precedenti fragranze NVC. Immediatamente intriga con un'apertura luminosa di agrumi che esalta le sfaccettature di the verde macchiato latte dell'osmanthus, la colonna floreale del profumo che reinterpreta un altro tema classic degli anni '70. La base è levigata, polverosa con accenni canella e violetta da ciprie barocche che fanno strada all'accordo chypre setoso che mi fa pensare a sari di seta albicocca in casse di legno pronti al salpare per la vecchia Europa.

Inspired by the first explorers starting trades between India and France during Louis XIV kingdom, Rahele edp is the new gem born from the collaboration between Neela Vermeire and master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour and is more Western influenced than past NVC scents. It immediately beguiles with a luminous citrus opening that brings out the milk-dashed green tea facets of osmanthus, the blooming pillar of the perfume that reinterprets another 1970s classic theme. The base is smooth, dusted by baroque make-up hints of cinnamon and violet giving way to silky chypre accord making me think of apricot tinged saris in wooden cases ready to be shipped to the old world.
