Le Galion Special for Gentlemen e Eau Noble (2014)

Special for Gentlemen è la prima fragranza maschile che Le Galion lanciò subito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale ma sarebbe difficile dire da quale era provenga se non fosse per le inconfondibili cromature del galbano tanto in voga nel 1947. La sua eleganza intemporale potrebbe appartenere alla belle époque come agli anni '60 ed è modellata sullo scheletro olfattivo delle lavande ambrate ed animali figlie del mio adorato Jicky. Basta uno spruzzo per capire che Special for Gentlemen è Cary Grant, fresco di rasatura in Caccia al Ladro: non sarà giovanissimo ma che importa quando si è così stilosi da arrampicarsi sui tetti senza un capello fuori posto e sedurre giovani ereditiere con modi sornioni?

Special for Gentlemen was the first masculine fragrance the Le Galion introduced right after the WWII but it would be difficult to tell from which era it comes if it wouldn't be for the unmistakable galbanum chromings so in fashion in 1947. Its timeless elegance could come from the belle epoque as well as from the '60s and it's shaped on the olfactory backbone of ambery-animalic lavenders sprung from my beloved Jicky. One spray is enough to realize that Special for Gentlemen is like the clean-shaven Cary Grant of To catch a thief: maybe he's not so young but who cares when you're so stilish you can climb roofs with not a hair out of place and you can seduce young heiresses with sneaky ways?

Lavanda, che peccato di gola!

Chi mi conosce sa che difficilmente amo le lavande e in particolare quel genere di lavanda che mi rituffa all'istante fra zie austere in gabardine blu, parenti in loden dissotterrato dall'armadio per la festa e vecchi negozi di barbieri di provincia.

Fortunatamente ci hanno pensato i grandi classici della profumeria a farmi apprezzare questa pianta aromatica che fiorisce proprio in estate, specialmente il mio adorato Jicky eau de toilette, dove la lavanda trionfa immersa in una luce dorata. Il potere magico della lavanda sta nell'alta percentuale di linalolo (e dei suoi acetati), composti molto volatili che la rendono fresca, floreale ma anche aromatica e ideale anche aggiunta in piccole dosi per dare luce e diffusività alle fragranze. La lavanda è un po' un'essenza tuttofare, ma non tutti sanno che è anche commestibile.

People who know me also know I hardly like lavenders and specially the kind of lavender that immediately takes me back to severe aunties in blue gabardine, relatives in loden overcoats dug up from the wardrobe for the festivities and old country barbershops.

Fortunately big perfumery classics happened to change my mind about this aromatic plant blooming in the summer, specially my beloved Jicky eau de toilette letting lavender shine drenched in a golden light. The magic of lavender lays in the great percentage of linalool (and its acetates), highly volatile compounds that makes it fresh, floral yet aromatic and suitable even if doused in tiny amounts to add sparkle and diffusivity in fragrances. Lavender is a kind of all-in-one essence but not everybody knows it's even edible.

I Maestri del Profumo: Edmond Roudnitska (2) Eau d'Hermès (1951)

Come ho messo in risalto nella prima parte di questa monografia, Edmond Roudnitska in 70 anni ci ha lasciato 17 gioielli con cui ha segnato l'estetica olfattiva contemporanea. Quello che secondo me rappresenta la gemma più preziosa, il capolavoro assoluto che riassume tutta la sua arte è l'Eau d'Hermès. Il 1951 in casa Hermès è un anno rivoluzionario: con la morte di Emile-Maurice Hermès si chiude l'era degli Hermès Frères in cui la griffe da selleria si era trasformata in produttore di pelletteria e accessori di lusso perfino per lo Zar. Per la prima volta in oltre cento anni, l'azienda usciva dalla linea di sangue sotto la direzione del genero di Emile, Robert Dumas. Egli volle subito rimarcare la continuità con l'eredità del passato battezzando il passaggio del testimone con un profumo dedicato a Emile stesso che fosse l'essenza dell'eleganza Hermès. Edmond Roudnitska che aveva trovato in Robert un amico oltre che un committente, recepì questo spirito creando un profumo che emanasse classe e tradizione, ma reinventata attraverso la sua visione astratta della creazione olfattiva.

The Masters of Perfume: Edmond Roudnitska (2) Eau d'Hermès (1951)

As I pointed out in the first part of this monography, Edmond Roudnitska in 70 years left us 17 jewels that allowed him to mark the contemporary olfactory aesthetics. What I cherish as the most precious gem, the absolute masterpiece summarizing all his art is Eau d'Hermès. 1951 for the Hermès house is a revolutionary year: the death of Emile-Maurice Hermès puts an end to the Hermès Frères era during which the brand from saddlery becomes producer of luxury leather goods and accessories even for the Tzar. For the first time in more than a hundred years the company passed out of the blood line under the direction of Emile's son in law Robert Dumas. He immediately wanted to highlight the link with heritage baptizing the passage of the baton with a perfume dedicated to Emile aimed to be the essence of the Hermès elegance. Edmond Roudnitska who found in Robert both a customer and a friend, aknowledged this spirit concocting a perfume exuding class and tradition,  renewed though through his abstract vision of olfactory creation.

Le storie d'amore non ci lasciano mai indifferenti e poco importa se esse siano favole o realtà, drammi o storie a lieto fine, quello che è certo è che parecchi creatori di fragranze hanno tentato di distillarne l'essenza. L'ottava arte è costellata di capolavori ispirati ad una storia d'amore, primo fra tutti uno dei capostipiti della profumeria moderna, il rivoluzionario Jicky. Nel 1889 Aimé Guerlain impiegò le più belle materie naturali quali bergamotto e lavanda di Grasse e le intrise di zibetto in quantità indecente. Le unì alle più innovative molecole di sintesi dell'epoca, cumarina ed ethyl-vanillina, per create una fragranza astratta senza precedenti. Jicky, vezzeggiativo con cui Aimé chiamava suo nipote Jacques, era anche il nome di giovane ragazza di cui Aimé si innamorò perdutamente durante gli studi in Inghilterra. Quando lui ne chiese la mano i genitori di lei rifiutarono, così tornò in Francia senza mai più sposarsi. L'aura dorata della gioventù ed il ricordo appassionato e struggente di questo sentimento forte ed osteggiato rivivono in questo capolavoro brutale e soavissimo.

Love stories never happen to leave us cold and whether they are fairitales or reality, dramas or happy ends, it doesn't matter. What's sure is many perfumers tried to bottle their essence. The 8th art is scattered with masterpieces inspired by love stories, first of all one of the progenitors of modern perfumery, the revolutionary Jicky. In 1889 Aimé Guerlain used the most beautiful natural raw materials like bergamot and lavender from Grass soaking them in an undecent load of civet. He joined also the most groundbreaking synthetics at that time, cumarine and ethyl-vanillin to conconc an abstract fragrance never seen before. Jicky, a nickname Aimé put to his nephew Jacques, was also the name of a young girl he fall hopelessly in love with while he was studying in England. At his proposal of marriage her parents refused, so he got back to France and never married. The golden aura of youth and the passionate struggling memory of this strong and unfortunate feeling relived in this brutal and sweet masterpiece.
